Hey there! I know this is a sort of silly request, but I’m starting high school next year, and would love some advice on how to retain my sanity.

if you don't have friends see if you can hide somewhere during lunch...

as someone who’s survived four whole years of absolute HELL, i found that the safest place to chill out is the computer lab or library. just find a computer or place out of sight, and sit down and chill out and eat some food

it's gonna suck! it's gonna REALLY. FRIGGIN. SUCK! but suicide is never an option!! reach out to people, we're *all* struggling. you're never alone.
if you have friends, you're all set! be prepared to lose some, but so long you keep the right people you're allllll good. you might make it through without landing in therapy!
and try to have fun. good luck, small one <3

hope you have really nice librarians and find some teachers who might let well behaved students away with stuff... I got to use the microwave in the teacher's lounge to heat up my lunch... Teacher's lounge is really just their lunch room where they also put some office goodies resist temptation and stay out of their doughnuts and brownies and crap...

Don’t be afraid to talk to people and make new friends, and don’t stress yourself out too much. I go to a huge high school with over 800 people per grade, so my experience is a bit different then many others but still- not always terrible. For each class I found at least one person, even if we weren’t super close we could still help each other out for that class. If you are just starting as a freshman, do NOT believe everything that upperclassmen (especially seniors) tell you about the school. Also, try lots of new things! If your school has a lot of clubs try them out- maybe not all year, but just trying out new things is good! My school offers a ton of activities- clubs, marching band, sports, even things such as a bowling team, golf team, hockey team etc. if there is drama, try not to get involved (and those that cause drama may not be the best to be around anyways). As someone who is currently in high school as well and was in your situation not too long ago, high school is nowhere near perfect, and sometimes it does feel like hell. But finding people that you like and trying to involve yourself does help a lot- even on those nights where you are extremely stressed and anxious while studying or doing homework until three in the morning.
Edit: just to confirm, what I do may not be really the best- I focus way too much on GPA and take all honors/AP courses- it is a lot of stress and really probably not the best way to go about it. But hey, I do varsity sports and keep a 4.25 weighted GPA! (4.0 non weighted) other people’s advice may be better in the long run, I was just sharing based on my experience

Okay, unpopular opinion but clubs and sports are absolutely not necessary, you can certainly join them if you want but I have gotten by just fine without them. Don't feel pressured to join them if you don't like the idea of it, it's still really easy to make friends. Do the opposite of what I do and you should be fine, I make D's in multiple classes but pass the exams. Basically, try to keep up with work (but don't stay up to 3 AM just to do homework. focus first on most important stuff and get in the lesser stuff if you still have time later). Get used to group projects, they're gonna be a lot more common. Also, especially if you're gonna be in any particularly challenging classes, study groups are so good. If your teachers ever offer after school study sessions, go. They are so unbelievably helpful.
Also I find it useful to befriend the people you sit right next to in each class.. miss a day? They can help you catch up. Forget supplies? They've probably got some you can borrow. (oftentimes I was the one lending paper to people, but tbh it's worth it for those bad days where you just forget everything). Plus that's how I met one of my close friends, we have nothing in common but she sat next to me in two classes. I would have never met her otherwise.

Don’t do what I did last year, I wasn’t even in high school but now im stressing that it’ll happen again this year in high school- PROCRASTINATION
There were so many times where I was was doing all the paper or project on the last day night and it sucked. Or all the times where we all totally forgot about that homework so we scribble things on it right before class hoping it looked like math equations. Or all the times where we had absolutely no idea what we were doing so it’s a good thing we were friends with the smart kid in the class. Honestly it’s a miracle I passed algebra last year. I know you’re not on this website but I never did get to thank you for helping me so I’m thanking you now thanks Angelo
