I personally prefer Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. It seems much more real and down-to-earth.

Don't know too much about SVU, but I definitely back the original Law and Order at the very least. They do a lot of episodes inspired by real, famous cases and even had (at least one that I know of) a real police officer on the cast (Dennis Farina as Joe Fontana) and even though I can't find the source I'm pretty sure Farina consulted for the show before he got the acting gig.

One step up: Forensic Files. All true crime stories, real detective work. Told a bit more like a documentary, but still very enjoyable.
