Growing up I always had a zillion critters... and quite the unusual assortment as well.
I've been petless for quite some time and I'm now in a position in life to consider getting a partner in crime lil buddy again.
I've made a list to consider so far: silkie chicken, ferret, prairie dog (had a loving lil fellow in the past), bearded dragon, blue tongued skink, sphynx, mainecoon, & skunk
I love quirky unorthodox species but overall I'm just looking for a nice companion. Please feel free to leave any pet suggestions or thoughts! : )

aww a skunks are so adorable, i'd love to get one as a pet someday <3. i'm not sure of your experience with marine fish, but if you've been in the fish keeping hobby before maybe you'd try out a tessalata eel? i've always wanted one, and personally i think they're adorable! i know fish don't interest everyone though and if fish aren't your style, a domestic fox would be a super cool pet to have! (though, im pretty sure they have a pretty hefty price tag :P )

In the past I worked in an exotic animal sanctuary that housed a few rescued pet foxes. They were quite playful but a tad skittish. I also recall there was a rather unforgettable musky odor they made haha. I know Belyaev foxes are suppose to be remarkably friendly (for a fox standard anyways) but yes, their price costs a soul *yikes* XD

It's always a good idea to rescue some chickens! Whether those are silkie chickens or any other breed. I love chickens, I wish I still had mine.

I'm completely biased because I love reptiles, but my vote would be a beardie or blue-tongued skink. I want to get one of each myself eventually.

I think you should get a cat. Cats are pretty friendly and playful! My cat has been with me for so long that when I sometimes don't pet her, she will meow at me till I do. She was licking my toe earlier. For breed recommendation bombay and Siamese mix are pretty cool. My cat Olive is one. Bombays are super affectionate, will normally take a liking to one person, and sleep a lot. Siamese are very vocal and attention seeking. The mix generally sheds quite a bit, but not to the point where floof falls off every time the cat jumps. Groom the cat and it should be just fine! The mix is normally all black, (Bombays are all black and Siamese can be black and white), but mine has little white spot on her belly. The poor kitties aren't taken that much because they are all black and "bad luck".
Sorry about that mini cat info rant xd. I love cats a lot and I just like to share my knowledge. Whether you pick a cat or not I hope your critter brings you happiness.

I recommend going for the chicken or bearded dragon tbh. Skunks, Foxes and Prairie Dogs aren't really domesticated and aren't the best companion animals, not to mention the really really expensive vet fees and dubious methods some exotics are obtained. Try adopting an animal that's used to being kept with humans.
P.S. - Guinea Fowls might be a good thing to consider. They have brightly colored plumage and don't rough up the ground as much as chickens.
