TOPIC | Dragons in real life (Discussion)
1 2
(First post here, hello everyone!)

So I've been here quite recently (Hi), partly because I love dragons and how they came to be a part of human's most iconic fantasy.

If there is one question that would beg my time to ponder it very thoroughly, that would be: "What would you do if dragons were part of our everyday lives?"

Imagine our current world where dragons can be found in both wild and domesticated environment, how much would change and how would it affect humanity in general? If we're talking about both types of dragons: Small and Big (Even to the Behemoth size), what place would they have in our society?

I'd imagine smaller dragons (or drakes) would 100% be house pets, if anything, they can even replace dogs! Think of that, everytime you come home, you'd be greeted by a flying, winged reptile with scales that are hard as rocks and are possibly troublemakers (Minor fire hazards, the little devils!) while their larger counterpart would serve mainly as transportation, or even replacing heavy lifting equipment like mechanical cranes and medium-sized trucks, plus they'd make a great luxurious travel mount for the noble steeds (I can imagine the British Royal Family would want a dozen royal dragons to fly around with).

It is definitely interesting to imagine a world where humans and dragons co-exist, and they are part of our everyday life.

If anyone knows of any material (books, games, cartoons, anime, etc...) that depicts even slightly of this, I'd love to know!

it's such a good thought. Small dragons would TOTALLY probably be kept as pets (imagine wyrms or lindwurms taking place of snakes!?). Large flying dragons and wyverns ridden like planes. People would probably go out on dangerous expeditions to find rare (or 'legendary' if you will) ones because that's what people tend to already do sometimes lol

And then -- Sadly, I'm teased a LOT in school for having a belief in dragons, I got verbally attacked over it by a group of boys last week. They literally leaned out a window just to yell at me all the way on the ground outside teasing me and yelling that dragons are fake and making noises that are triggering to me. It's been going on since last year.

Are we talking smart dragons or animal ones?
Smart, enormous, fire-breathing, flying creatures would probably have a big impact on human civilization/development :D
If they were stupid we could see them as being too dangerous to be widely used (think elephants but much worse) and if they were smart it'd be unethical to use them without their consent.
Or we'd have hunted them to extinction ages ago like most other megafauna.

We couldn't see small ones being as popular as dogs for pets. They'd have some specialist care and a pet that can set the house on fire doesn't sound great for most people.

It'd be cool though.
Big yikes... reading that somewhat broke my heart, I guess people would be jerks to whatever they see as outlandish to them, but don't let them drag you down to their misery pit, all we may know is that they could be just a bunch of sad bullies looking for reasons to pick on people because they can. Keep your belief in dragons strong, and we might one day see one being genetically made, I'm positive that's a possible future! :3
Well, as for most pets, they would require some training, or preferably have their genetics modified so they have small and unharmful sparks that might be entertaining to small children (just don't let them play around with it too much), after all, dogs were also domesticated from wolves, plus, we do train our dogs as well, it'll definitely be a bit harder for dragons though.
Yup yup if they were domesticated over thousands of years like dogs then they'd make better pets. If we're talking a fantasy world where everyone loves dragons then sure why not they'd be cool pets. We still don't see them being as popular. Reptiles can make awesome pets and they're really cool but they aren't the same as a dog or cat and they aren't for everyone. Even without the the fire think of the damage the scales could do to furniture and skin.

I'd still love to adopt a few, they'll keep my chin up if I ever feel down, but then again, you're right, dogs can cats can do the same. Though, who wouldn't want a majestic dragon as a house pet, mostly for bragging rights :P

haha, i love thinking about stuff like this! not to shill my own work but I make illustrations based on the concept of dragons as fully-intelligent beings that coexist with people, because a lot of dragon stories do make them out as being at like, a human-level intelligence. Also i think it's neat idk. this one's my favorite both on like a technical quality level but also at a conceptual level as for like, normal pets, I could see it as being kinda like keeping snakes. Like, they're definitely classified as exotics and it's probably not very easy to find vets or good husbandry advice but they're not so rare that they're prohibitively expensive and probably illegal. It's also probably similar in that, while you can find non-deadly domesticated breeds, there's also probably plenty of ones you can't/shouldn't keep because they're venomous or they breathe fire and they could kill you on accident, but you could probably find em in a safe enclosure at a zoo. I think if I had the option I might want one? A cat-size house dragon. No wings tho; I need to be able to put things on High Surfaces that the little brat can't get to. Might be too high-maintenance for me, though. I'm very much a cat person and I dunno if dragons being a thing would change that! however if dragons were real and were as smart as we were i would definitely want a big one to be my best friend. i'm pretty [s]small[/s] compact and i think a giant friend with so many teeth would make me feel pretty safe. and if they had wings and were willing to give me a ride to class that would be nice too

im so obsessed with this concept that I have a dragon with a human rider c: they're in the FFXIV universe, so they aren't exactly.. modern but it gets the point across of dragons and humans and i live for it
possibly troublemakers (Minor fire hazards, the little devils!)
even minor fire hazards is probably bad. i bet thatll affect what materials are used for houses and furniture and such.
