the internet taught me that an adoptable is generally a character design made to be sold or traded or whatever and id consider a ych (your character here) different from that
to me personally, a ych is more of a commission type since youd be getting the art of your character and not a new character itself
even if the artist only takes 1 commission per ych base, youre still getting the art out of it
the adoptables forum on fr is full of these ych type threads and from what i remember, youre not allowed to bump threads there even tho many people use it similar to the art sales thread, although they have a specific kind of art they sell

"adopt" has just become blurred for me. i'm used to seeing it as a character design being sold for money/art/other characters but the flightrising community has decided that ychs are under the "adoptable" term. so really depending on what sites you're on, it could go either way

Adoptable has always seemed like more of a blanket term to me? I feel like the term simply varies based on what kind of site it is? Like for social media and art sharing sites it makes sense to sell and trade new creatures, while a sim site like this makes more sense to use the recycled lineart for players existing creatures. I mean, we are here for pixel dragons, it makes sense to only really make art based of said dragons, not other creatures. I hope this makes sense? I think I may have got lost somewhere.

Personally, when I hear "adoptable", my brain immediately goes to a character design for sale. I prefer to just use the term YCH for the types of commissions you described.
I don't see anything wrong with people using "adoptable" for "YCH", but it's just a personal preference of mine to separate the terms so I don't get confused... I'm very easily confused. :'D

Adoptable to me is a pre-made design of a character, outfit, what-have-you for sale or trade - you are getting rights for that design.
In the context of the FR forums however I know there's a long tradition of calling YCH's adopts, but outside of here I'd never expect 'adopt' to be used in that context really.
