My dad and I often buddy read books together. He’s asked me to pick one for us, and I have absolutely no clue what to read. The last two we’ve read were Stephen King’s Night Shift and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.

We enjoy sci-fi a lot and fantasy wouldn’t be a bad choice! I just need some options because my mind is completely empty regarding our next book. ^^’

"Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is a ridiculously fun book. Even if you've read it, before, reading it in a buddy system would be a great experience!

If you're alright with multi-book series and haven't read it already, I highly recommend the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer! More on the horror side of sci-fi, but well-written and pretty fascinating. (That said I'm only 2/3rds of the way thru the trilogy so lol)

I'd also suggest looking into China Miéville's work! He jumps around genres a lot but is reliably weird/fantastical, always in an interesting way. My favorite book of his is Kraken, but it's a bit of a difficult start if you're new to his work— do check out Un Lun Dun, Embassytown, Perdido Street Station or Railsea tho!

Michael Crichton is also one of my long-time favs for sci-fi. Jurassic Park is obvi his best but The Andromeda Strain (my personal favorite) and Prey are great as well. Sphere is also pretty good but I have Issues with it that i will not go into right now lol
"Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is a ridiculously fun book.
Seconding. The series is and will always be one of my favorites, and there is something enjoyable about having someone to talk about it with as you read/reread it.

His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman is really good. It's one of those books for kids that get surprisingly dark, and the concept of having part of your soul represented as an animal is really cool. It's also becoming an hbo tv series!

I stumbled across 'The Endling' and I thought it was a mighty good book! It's about an alternative reality sort of thing where there are 6 governing species (I think humans are among one of them, too)

Lots of adventure and fantasy!
