TOPIC | Earthquakes!

To those that live in Cali (or close enough) did ya'll feel that earthquake tonight? Or any of the others? This 7.1 one was crazy! I don't live near where it happened but boy did we feel the shaking! My betta fish tank almost spilled over!

What do you guys think of all these quakes? Is the big one coming? I sure think it is.

Yeah! I felt it! 7.1 and it felt like it went on forever! Craziest part is that a 6.5 or something like that happened yesterday! And the epicenters were both nearly in the same place! 2 sizable earthquakes in the same area and almost in the same 24 hours!

Yup, felt the big ones and countless aftershocks here. There are so many aftershocks happening right now that the seismologists can’t keep up with recording them.

Remember that just because these quakes are happening doesn’t mean that “the big one” will happen soon. There are so many factors that play into that, and we don’t know enough to be able to predict it. It could happen tomorrow, it could happen 50 years from now. People have been saying we’re “overdue for the big one” since the 80s.

The best thing to do is make sure you’re prepared. Have an emergency kit with flashlights, water, non-perishable food, etc, and know what to do with your pets. Stay safe everyone!

@themasterplan47

Yeah its super crazy! I hope they don't get worse.

@Kes

Wow do you live near the epicenters? That sounds scary. Also thats all true, we really don't know enough to predict it. But is there a reason for the sudden rise in big magnitude ones? (Or am I just dumb and these kinds of earthquakes happen all the time? lol)

Also yeah, I do worry about my pets. I probably can't save my fish :( My dog should be fine, but I worry about my reptiles. I have a bearded dragon and a ball python. I do have containers for them, but I worry something bad could happen while I'm not home.

Yeah it's nuts. With these things it's hard to tell. Kes is right we've been waiting on the 'big one' forever. The last 'one' the San Andreas had was I'm pretty sure in the 1850s at fort tejon. So we could get it tomorrow or in another few decades.

I will say that as far as seismic activity goes, two large earthquakes in the same area in such a short span of time might indicate the fault getting ready to make a big slip. Only time will tell ^_^

I didn’t even know there were earthquakes, I honestly thought I was just really lightheaded (a common occurrence for me.)

Im back
I felt them both, yesterday and today! I live on the second story of a two story building — I’m in West LA, so pretty much as far as one can be from the epicenter in Los Angeles — and both times it felt like I was on a boat! Strong but gentle rocking. Pretty crazy how strong they both were — I can’t imagine what it felt like actually close to the epicenter.

That quake went on for a long time where I'm at. it felt like it had stopped for a few seconds, but then it shook a little harder...

everything was fine, checked up on my fishtanks and discovered the poor dears hiding in their plants. I'm hoping that's the strongest we get for a while, but you never know with nature...

Edit: I didn't feel the one yesterday, but several customers at my job did. I only saw the lights swaying, but aside from the customers in the fitting rooms and checkout line no one seemed to have noticed which is a good thing because im 100% not prepared for dealing with an actual disaster on the job
