TOPIC | Pairing Spices with Fruits

Here are my favourite flavour mix-ups:

Apple and Cinnamon (duh)

Pear and Ginger (used to be a common combo, can't find it in anything anymore?)

Watermelon and Rosemary (try it before you decide against it, very refreshing)

Orange and Cloves (Instant Christmas)

Pineapple and Chili (good on the grill!)

Raspberry and Vanilla (I prefer it over other berries with vanilla, but that's me)

Strawberry and Pepper (yes, a sprinkle of plain black pepper)

Apricot and Cardamom (especially in baking)

Cucumber and Mint (yes yes not a fruit I know)

Dates and Black Tea (not technically a spice, but soaking dates in strong tea makes a whole new ingredient for any fruit loaf)

Tomato and Oregano (Pizza!)

Cranberry and Cocoa (the bitterness of both creates a pleasantly un-sweet counterbalance to desserts)

I can't think of any others at the moment, but there should be more combos! Can you think of any? Do you have a weird favourite combo for me to try?

One of my favorites is mango (especially when it's not all that ripe) with lime juice, salt, and pepper

I mean technically cucumber is a fruit. [emoji=pearlcatcher winking size=1] How about watermelon and salt? It makes the watermelon taste much sweeter. And while not at all a seasoning or spice, I find a lot of fruit plus cheeses go well together. Edit: ! Lemon and poppy seed. Not really something you just eat together, more a combo of flavors that you find in other foods.

I used to eat apples with ketchup as a kid.

Whip some mascarpone, powdered sugar, and heavy whipping cream in a blender, layer with berries, and drizzle with balsamic glaze. Way less weird than ketchup.

@Kirrandria I know, I just didn't want to have to deal with all the "thats a veggie" comments I might get so I threw it in there. Actually never tried salty watermelon! But I know it's quite common, will try it next time watermelons are on offer. So happy my bicycle's basket is perfect for melons :3

Ohwow, lots of combos to try! I've only ever made soup out of pumpkin, but maybe some nutmeg would improve it. Last time it got a bit fibery, need to cut the pumpkins smaller. The good edible ones are hard to get here.

I wish I could eat sweet potatoes they are nummy yummy but destroy my tummy :P

@Cutiepaws

The thing about pumpkin soup, like asparagus soup, is you need to strain it to make it better. It’s an annoyingly large amount of work (but not really unless you’re in a restaurant setting. Personal in your kitchen is like...five mins work.) for a soup. It seems stupid, but unless you blend every ounce of soup on liquefy, you will always have the fibrey bits in there. Any decent strainer with some cheesecloth in it and a rubber spatula will improve it greatly without changing the recipe.
