More specifically, what items vanish? Just the chest, or the contents too? Could I open my chests now and save the contents to be sold later?

@utopianangel the chests are the only thing that will disappear after the event. Everything you got out of them will not disappear

Yep, Chests will turn into Strange Dust once the event is done with. Everything you pulled from them (genes, breed change scrolls, familiars, food, etc) you'll get to keep forever. :)
