The Shifting Emporium is a maze of strange stalls and stranger inhabitants, never quite the same from one moment to the next, deep in the moving, living dunes of the Shifting Expanse. But the stalls and the sands aren't the only things that are changing.

Dragons come to the Emporium to browse the wares, to explore, for the excitement of a strange -- and maybe a little dangerous -- place. And some are hoping that a certain rumor is true, a rumor that the dragon who enters may not look like the dragon who leaves...

(...Somewhere in the sands, hidden among the stalls, a lost, forgotten egg is hatching. What will the hatchling be, when they finally emerge?)

how_to_play.png

 • Choose one of the participating dragons here.
 • Go to the Scrying Workshop and give them a makeover! Find a combination of breed and genes that really makes that dragon's colours work.
 • (Or, for the egg, find a look that works for any colours.)
 • Be creative! Sure, crystal/facet/glimmer always looks good, but finding a stripes/spots combo that really suits that dragon? Much more impressive.
 • Post your redesign in the thread.
 • If there's a particular name or bit of lore you'd give them, or a particular outfit you'd put them in, that you think adds to the look you're going for, stick that in your post too!
 • Just before the Carnivale ends, I'll announce the winners and shapeshift those dragons!

Prizes.png

The person who submits the design I like best for each dragon will win that dragon, with the suggested changes made. Make sure your entry is something you like. If you win, they're joining your clan!

(I started out intending to do little stories to go with the spot prizes, but lost momentum after... one day. This is why we write our fluff in advance, kids!)
"Hey! You there! With the pretty blue wings!" A little Fae is waving at her from atop a massive metal-and-glass contraption. She walks closer and sees herself reflected blurrily in its depths. It's an outrageously complicated mirror. The Fae scrambles down the side of the device to eye level. "Want to see yourself as you could be? It'll be tricky, but I think we can get you looking even better! It's free to look!" She's intrigued, and curious what the mirror does. "Sure." Before the word's out of her mouth he's darting up and down the sides of the machine, over it, behind it, pulling levers and flicking switches and saying things like "Vipera, you like vipera?" and "No, no, not with that contrast," not waiting for her to respond before he's whisked off to the next thing. Crystal lenses and panes of coloured glass slide in and out over the mirror's face, distorting the image even more. After a minute he comes to a stop on top of the device. "There we go," he pants, hauling on a wheel bigger than he is. "How's that?" She's about to offer to give him a hand when she sees her reflection come into focus. Except... it's not her. She moves her head, and the Coatl in the mirror moves hers. It is her. Like he said, as she could be. She gasps, staring. "Wow." "400t for a picture," the Fae says. He winks. "But for you, I'll say three." She sits up on her hind legs, admiring the new patterns. "Hmm. Can I make some changes?" "Of course!" he says, poising himself to spring into action again. "What would you like?" When she's satisfied, he presses a button and the machine, hissing and clattering alarmingly, spits out a photo. Her, but different. She buys the picture. "What are they?" "Magic rings," the Mirror stallholder says. "Mostly. I think. Give one a try!" He picks one up delicately. It's tiny in his hand. "What do they do?" "No idea," the Mirror says cheerfully. Well, life is an adventure. He pokes the tip of his smallest finger into the ring and, to his surprise, finds it sliding all the way on. It fits perfectly. The Mirror seems to have disappeared. Then he feels it. He's falling. He flares his wings, startled, and they're somehow heavier than usual. He flaps, his feet lift off the ground, but everything is still rushing toward him- No. Everything is growing. He's shrinking. He settles on the now-enormous counter. The ring is still on his hand, still a perfect fit. He pulls it off, ready to hop down if he starts to grow again, but nothing happens. The Mirror pops her head back up from under the counter. "Where did- Oh. There you are. ...That is you, right?" "I guess that's what it does," he says drily, dropping the ring back in the bowl. She has the decency to look abashed. "It's not bad, actually. Here." She angles a mirror toward him. He's a Fae, which he'd already guessed, and... she's right. He looks pretty good. He spreads his new wings, turns his head on his long, long neck to see the fins. He could definitely get used to this. Toxin's cyan matches his eyes and is nicely distributed on a Skydancer, not too much or too little. Scales looks great in honey, and with a Bogsneak's great big feet and smallish wings it's the main feature of the design. Toxin, of course, has the matching yellow highlights, but it's the Tapir that really brings it all together. The blotchy stripes echo the regular Scales pattern and the irregular Toxin bubbles, so all three genes feel like they go together. Bright and bold without being garish.

Tuesday's winners: PsydrateSky and Nighttyger. Congratulations! Smirch is working wonders here. The glow effect makes the rest of her wings look even more shadowy, the smirch itself looks like blood spatter or cobwebs and (the real miracle) somehow Fuchsia and Red aren't clashing. The Fae glare gives her personality to match. Even with Metallic, she manages to not look metallic! 100% organic, 120% scary. i love her and despair
Denim and Fuchsia both pick up the same purple, and suddenly they actually go together! The dark around her bright blue eye, like heavy makeup, and the bright red spikes down the back of her head, make her look hella punk rock. I'm very picky about Spikes -- if it's there, it needs to be doing something, not just hiding an inconvenient tert colour. Here it's definitely pulling its weight. Trail goes great with Petals, and turns Oilslick blue to match. I wasn't sure she needed to be a Coatl, so I did some quick scries of the other breeds, and Coatl's the only one that works -- all the others' wings are either too brown or the stripes are too regular. She's got good colours for Firefly, of course, but for me to like it it's got to feel like it's contributing to the rest of the design, not just sitting on top.
