TOPIC | Beware the Beast [Pinkerlocke]

Hello all! I'm going to give this pinkerlocke thing another go! I really want to complete a pinkerlocke without losing my inspiration but I always fall off when the coli ruins my fun. Hopefully this ruleset will keep things interesting for me. My primary goals for this run are:

writing a single project for several months
drawing detailed backgrounds
generating personalities and designs for dragons and keeping them consistent
practice writing
get a mire flyer
This will be a bit different from the standard pinkerlocke because it will have two parties, the Prey and the Beast. As a warning this story will depict violence and very likely death. Please don't read this thread if that content sounds disturbing to you. Hello all! I'm going to give this pinkerlocke thing another go!
I really want to complete a pinkerlocke without losing my inspiration but I always fall off when the coli ruins my fun. Hopefully this ruleset will keep things interesting for me.

My primary goals for this run are:
  • writing a single project for several months
  • drawing detailed backgrounds
  • generating personalities and designs for dragons and keeping them consistent
  • practice writing
  • get a mire flyer
This will be a bit different from the standard pinkerlocke because it will have two parties, the Prey and the Beast.

As a warning this story will depict violence and very likely death. Please don't read this thread if that content sounds disturbing to you.
Rules:
The Prey are the typical Pinkerlocke subclan. The Beast is this dragon.

A death in the coliseum = that dragon must be exalted.
The Beast cannot die. If it collapses in the coliseum, stop leveling for the day.

Pinkerton's Presents:

Food:
  • Plants: 10-20 matches
  • Insects: 20-30 matches
  • Seafood: 30-40 matches
  • Meat: 40-50 matches
Battling:
Prey:
  1. RNG a team of 3 from the prey clan.
  2. Select the venue that is either one tier down or on level for the highest level dragon.
If your dragons level up while in an area, you can still stay there for the whole day. You can quit your battle streak at any time to regen health, and flee from battles if it is appropriate.
Beast:
  1. Place the Beast in the coli team.
  2. If he has any Prey with him, place them in the party. If there are no prey, place fodder.
  3. Level in the highest venue for the Beast's level.

Materials:
Write for your nuzlocke.

Trinkets:
Do some art for your nuzlocke!
Draw deaths. Draw dragons.
Draw familiars and dragons together.
If you make a nuzlocke thread, post your art there.

Familiars:
Buy the cheapest dragon in the auction house of a specific breed.
Use a random number generator (between 1-14) to determine which breed you will get! (Optionally: attach the familiar to the new dragon.)

1. Fae
2. Guardian
3. Mirror
4. Pearlcatcher
5. Ridgeback
6. Tundra
7. Spiral
8. Imperial
9. Snapper
10. Wildclaw
11. Nocturne
12. Coatl
13. Skydancer
14. Bogsneak
After buying your new dragon. Flip a coin.
Heads: They're Prey.
Tails: They're in the Beast's party.

Apparel:
Give the apparel to someone.
Breed two of your dragons. The dragons you pick are up to you.

If no one is RTB in the Prey Party, Flip a coin.
Heads: Flip another coin.
Tails: Nothing happens.

Heads: Follow Familiar rules. The new dragon joins the Prey party.
Tails: Follow Familiar rules. The new dragon joins the Beast's party.
The Beast's party maxes out at 3, including the Beast. If a new dragon is to join the Beast's party, flip a coin for the Beast's current party members. The winner escapes.

Note: When hatching nests, you must flip a coin for each hatchling once they hatch. If tails, the dragon is dead and you must exalt it. This is in keeping with the original Nuzlocke thread's rule, because I really like it.

Battle items:
The beast attacks. Flip a coin.
Prey Party:
Heads:
Randomly select three dragons using a random number generator from the prey party. Fight in the coliseum using the "food" rules 10 rounds consecutively (ie. you cannot leave that arena), quitting midway if a dragon dies.

Tails:
RNG a Prey Party member. The Beast has captured them.
They are now a member of his party.

RNG a Party. Roll a D4.
  1. Follow Plant Rules.
  2. Follow Insect Rules.
  3. Follow Fish Rules.
  4. Follow Meat Rules.

Beast Party:
Heads:
Make a party according to the food rules. Fight 10 rounds consecutively, quitting midway only if the Beast dies.

Tails:
Your Prey have escaped. If there are multiple Prey members in the Beast's party, they have escaped. RNG a dragon, they have escaped.
Write them back to the Prey party location. They have returned to the Prey Party.
Follow Meat Rules.

Extra Rules:
Dragons can get primaries at level 10, secondaries at level 15, and tertiaries at level 20.
If I get an unhatched egg, through scavenging or the coli, follow the familiar rules.

Starting out:
Using the method I detailed in the "familiar" possibility above, obtain a small number of dragons (I suggest 2 or 3). If they already have names, keep the name! If not, name them whatever you like.

If the Prey party all die, wait until tomorrow to buy 3 more dragons.
Continue with your new Prey party.

The run ends when I get 3 Prey to level 25 or the Beast reaches level 25.
Updates in this thread will happen when interesting things happen in the coli or I get material or trinket drops.

Barely two weeks old, he was too slow to catch birds or bugs, and too weak to endure attacks to steal eggs. His mother had abandoned him and all his sibling days ago, leaving him to fend for himself. Poorly. He lay still in his swamp's steaming muck. Rage building as he bided his time. Today that all changed. Hunger sharpened his teeth, desperation quickened his strikes and he finally struck true. His prize: A nest of ruby webwing hatchlings, and their watchful parent in the cattails by the water's edge. He devoured all he could, feathers, bone and discarded egg shells, everything but the bundle of twigs which he tossed aside. Energy bolstered by the meager meal he dragged himself from the water entirely to sun on a log. Satisfied. For now. The first two days he couldn't hack more than a battle or two before dropping, even with refreshing. He is now level 3. With the battlestone drop I brought out the potions and played the waiting game. He edged it out with the help of 30 potions. Depleting my stocks of basic potions almost completely. Bad luck for the Prey party, who are as of right now still babies. They'll be adults in a couple of days. I guess the Beast has a head start. The Beast will get an Eliminate, as I will be keeping him. The Prey will have to make do with numbers and basic stones. But I'm not gonna give Beast scratch or anything else unless he gets them as a drop from the coli or Pink. So 1 future berserk down.

The Beast got very lucky today.

Day 4: Hopeful Hatchlings A young Mirror stands among a handful of dragons of all ages, sizes, and breeds in a small Auction House in the Tangled Wood. All among the crowd have come to this outpost to beg travel to a new clan. Zudal is no different. She's a young Shadow Mirror with nothing to her name but the sign around her neck. It's a simple wooden plank, hung by a length of twine. In sloppy purple scrawl it originally read: "Will hunt, gather, and mind hatchlings for food. 6,299 T" but that was two days ago. Since then she'd swiped some red paint and scraped ANYTHING over top of her original message. The Auction House is sparse, but it was shelter. All dragons are welcome for up to a week at a time. The only downside is that food is not provided. As they don't have the resources. Her past two days had been identical. Wake early in her sparse bed, grab her sign, and sprint to a good, prominent spot to stand for hours. It was boring, but it gave her time to think and drakewatch. Across from the apprentice stalls were apparel stores, with merchantdrakes advertising their wares. Beyond them several small stalls of food and other trinkets. She was so hungry. But she couldn't give up! Two more days and she'd be kicked out either way. Then she could surely find something somewhere. She couldn't very well go back home. She'd agreed alongside all in her clutch to serve the Shadowbinder. Her parents were plague but they'd moved their entire clan from the Wyrmwound to the Tangled Wood before she was born. They'd raised her and her siblings with the understanding that serving their God the one who had graciously adopted them was the highest of honors. When the time had come to leave for her purpose, she'd chickened out and scampered off into the woods before wandering for days and stumbling upon this small gathering. Surely it would make no difference to her family if she worked among other dragons, than the gods? It wouldn't matter either way soon. If she didn't get brought on by another clan in 3 days, she'd have to face the wilderness alone or die. A cart of hatchlings and adolescents was driven up the dusty road to the meager Auction House. With the Trickmurk Circus less than a week away, more and more dragons were needed to bolster the ranks as the shadows are darkest and they were at their highest power all year. In it were a pair of small Plague hatchlings, a brightly striped Bogsneak, and a shimmering Spiral. The Spiral coiled around her best friend's neck, using his height to see farther ahead. "Anything Farr?" "We're coing up to a place. Looks like the place we left, but made of wood." They shared a look. "You were right then..." mumbled the Bog looking grim. "I don't want to serve the Shadowbinder" he grumbled under his breath. "All I want is to spend time with you." The Spiral smiled sadly. unwinding from his neck, she took his face in both of her small hands. "We're not dead yet Layem. Maybe we can get away! Or find someone here to help us!" He sulks unconvinced. Slapping his tail against the side of the cart. "Who would help a couple of hatchlings flee a God?" "Maybe another hatchling? Who knows." The crowd grew louder as they pulled to a stop in front of the small market stand. As the dragons around them start lumbering off the cart and toward the Auction House, the Spiral leaned close to the Bogsneak's ear to make sure that he heard her over the crowd. "Don't give up just yet! Where's your Plague spirit!" she chirped. He swiped tears from his face with a forepaw. "Alright, alright. Let's make ourselves a friend or two. Maybe they'll save our necks." [item="Igneous Flow"] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Writing is hard. I hope this isn't too clunky. I'm excited to practice more and see how I'll improve in comparison to these early posts. I like the "escapes the AH" trope I've seen in a lot of Pinkerlockes, but wanted to depict the AH less as a slavery analogue and more as a sort of apprentice market. Unfortunately being a triple basic plentiful breed leaves one with a lot less of a chance of being bought without a unique backstory, rare attributes, or skills. Lucky Zudal though, as I was looking for the least wanted for that exact reason! Farrha and Layem are both rather pretty. Kind of a shame. I've never had a Plague derg that fits the Plague stereotypes, but it's an interesting idea. I can admire a will to survive, as I'm sure you can. Here's hoping Pinkerton is kind to them and to me.

"Anything Farr?"
"We're coing up to a place. Looks like the place we left, but made of wood."
They shared a look.
"You were right then..." mumbled the Bog looking grim. "I don't want to serve the Shadowbinder" he grumbled under his breath. "All I want is to spend time with you."

The Spiral smiled sadly. unwinding from his neck, she took his face in both of her small hands.
"We're not dead yet Layem. Maybe we can get away! Or find someone here to help us!"
He sulks unconvinced. Slapping his tail against the side of the cart.
"Who would help a couple of hatchlings flee a God?"
"Maybe another hatchling? Who knows."

The crowd grew louder as they pulled to a stop in front of the small market stand.

Maybe they'll save our necks."

Igneous Flow
Writing is hard.

@CuddlyHippo Thank you so much!
I'm having fun so far, I can't wait to get my babies in the coli. >:)

And I'm excited to get better at writing through practice.
Especially with characters no one else is invested in. Feels freeing.

Days 6 & 7: Petty Theft The crowd from the cart joined the auction house, days shy of the Circus. Everyday more dragons disappeared in the night. Spirited away by Shadow clans to serve their God. Zudal snarled into her straw bed. Another day without even a glance. Her stomach was really getting to her now. "I don't know if I can make it to tomorrow after all..." Her grumbling stopped as a stampede of footsteps reached her ears. "Beds are this way! The Circus is tomorrow and recruiters will be here in an hour! All willing and wanting can join the ranks of the Shadowbinder! All the food and drink you could ever want are provided after enlisting!" touted a Shadow accolyte. They'd been dropping by every evening for almost as long as she'd been here. She had been tempted at the start, a second chance to do as her parents had willed, but the temptation burned off at the thought of war. After their speech, the stampede revealed itself to be 20 or so young dragons like herself. They were of all flights and all breeds, and talking ceaselessly among themselves. The sound set Zudal off instantly. She needed to think! To decide if she'd leave, and how. Straw did nothing to dull the noise. Snarling again, but much louder for effect, the Mirror cut through the crowd, and out of the building to the cool open air. The auction house was in a clearing. The Tangled Wood stretched on beyond it's edge on all sides. In the silence of the open air she could just hear the waves crashing on the beach. The only thing separating the Tangled Wood from the endless growth of the Labyrinth. Growing into the sea. Zudal focused on her second sight as she snuck behind the main building to the staff cabin. Ahead of her, and pursuing the same path, were a pair of young dragons, like herself. A Bogsneak and a Spiral. Beyond them was a cart of carnival food, and supplies. Pay for recruits no doubt. Zudal snuck up behind them, close enough to hear them speak. "We have a couple of hours to leave before it's off to the Circus." began the Bog. "Think they'd miss a little food?" replied the Spiral. "if we can sneak up on them." "How do you sneak up on a Shadow?" replied the Bogsneak. Zudal saw her opening. Stretching out her magic, she galloped along the bog's side and then slowed into a stalking walk. She could feel their eyes, and hear them moving to follow her through the grass. Inching up to the cart she stopped to listen. Muffled conversation carried from the cabin itself. The door was ajar, pouring out yellow light. Flicking her tail aside, Zudal turned and made eye contact with the Spiral. "Watch my back, and we can share." She whispered. Then she slipped into the cart. Bags of carnival food surrounded her. Resisting the urge to dig in immediately, she scanned for things she could carry easily. Candyfloss wasn't filling, chocolate cookies would be missed, Aha! Spying a wrapped package of wax paper, she plucked it in her jaws, turned and dropped it. "Wait until we leave" Then hopped back in,dropped another package and returned again. The Spiral whistled. Bristling, Zudal grabbed something and sprinted. The spiral and bog stomped on behind her, with their bundles in their mouths. Voices picked up behind them, angry adults. They ran and ran. Zudal zigged and zagged, legs burning. Past the auction house, and into the woods, then beyond that to the water's edge. A handful of boats were roped up to docks. Zudal dragged herself to a dinghy and dropped her foil wrapped food inside. Turning back to look at her new cohorts, she found them collapsed on the beach. They had to leave. Now. Pacing back, she stopped near the bog's head. "It's just a little farther. We need to leave before they catch up!" He was gasping heavily, but managed "alright" and turned to the Spiral who is gathering herself. Clearly exhausted. She was too. Together they untied the small boat and pushed off the dock. The Bog paddled with his tail and Zudal and the Spiral used the oars to the best of their ability. Eventually they were all too tired to do even that. The Tidelord had pity upon them. Drawing his namesake out, dragging them farther out to sea. Seeing no one behind them, Zudal finally relaxed. Rolling onto her back, and opening her foil package, Zudal found a large Grilled Firebelly Scorpion. Making a face she offered it to the spiral. "I'm Zudal." she stated simply. The spiral smiled. Trading the scorpion for her bundle. "I'm Farrha" she replied taking the scorpion and giving Zudal hers. Looking over her shoulder to tell the bog to introduce himself, she found him digging into a bag of candied potato onions face first. She snorted then added with a smile "this is Layem." Nodding Zudal turned to her new bundle. It smelled likely to be meat. Tearing away foil she found a whole sausage of a meat she didn't recognize. Perfect. Power poured into her veins as she gorged. Either the circus was here early or she was hungrier then she'd thought. ----------------------------------------------------------- Tired already of webwing meat, the Beast tried his hand at catching Mith. Spying a nest of leaves clustered together high on the trunk of a young tree, the Beast began to plot. He wasn't much of a climber... but he could bring them down to him! Spreading his paws sturdily in the moist earth, he positioned his tail adjacent to the trees trunk, bent it away as far as he could, and slammed it into the bark, rattling the sappling and it's occupants. Again and again he repeated his action until a great buzzing sounded above him. Countless Luna Mith poured from the small nest opening. Moving rhythmically in an alternating pattern they gather their energy for magic. The Beast balks. Their numbers are too great. Day 8: A New Home, and Haughty Hubris The current of the sea between the Tangled Wood and Verdant Labyrinth pulled the small boat out to open water down toward the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Energy replenished by the food the trio of dragons set about unfurling the small boat's single sail and exploring the boat properly. Zudal found a single grey blanket and a folded up tarp, tucked under the frontmost seat on the small sailboat. Layem found a small emergency supply kit, a small metal box of dried rations packed under the backmost seat on the boat as well. Farrha flew up the mast and unfurled the sail before tying it down so that it filled with air and the boat picked up speed considerably, pushed on by the breezes pushing toward the Sea. Returning with their gathered items, they decided to talk while the water was easy. "Farrha, Layem, what do you two want to do?" Zudal said, "I don't have any plans beyond having somewhere to be that isn't the Shadowbinder's court." "We didn't really have any plans beyond getting out of there too." Layem replied, "Our home clan disagreed with us being together, so they shipped us out to join the war effort. We could have gone to the Plaguemother or the Shadowbinder and we chose the Shadowbinder to buy us so time. Dunno if we would've been quiet enough to get much from the cart without you." "I agree wholeheartedly! And you ran so far so fast, we could hardly keep up! Who wouldn't want you for their clan?" Farrha chimed in. "Oh that. Really I don't know what came over me. I think it's the Circus. I feel like my magic is coursing through me even though I've never trained with it at all." Zudal replied, her crests folded back making her look sheepish. She held a forepaw out and flexed it, stretching out her claws in the darkness. The shadows between her fingers wavered and stretched, animated by her magic. "It's so cool though!" Farrha gasped "Plague magic is most useful for medicine and killing prey. Nothing you can use to hide outside of the wyrmwound. Atleast as far as I know." "Enough of the auction house." said Zudal "We're a clan now! What sort of place do you want to stop at? An Island? Or maybe we should try to dock on the other side of the Labrynth?" chirped the mirror, clearly overjoyed. "Mmm I'd like an island, but maybe that's too isolated?" suggested Farrha. "Wouldn't that be good? I mean no more recruiters." countered Layem. "Just the 3 of us forever? I like you two, but I dunno." frowned Zudal. "Surely we'd eventually get sick of just one another." Just then a small flock of birds' voices interrupted their discussion, and passed back toward the way they'd come from. Zudal turned forward again, and saw ahead of them the wild, untamed jungle of the Labyrinth stretching on ahead of them, and below that a strip of lighter beach. Straining her eyes Zudal could just make out what looked like footprints on the sand going from the beach to the jungle, or maybe two sets? Going from the Jungle to the beach and back? Either way it was something. Days 9-11: Dawn of a New Day The young clan spent the rest of the night on the beach. Dragging the boat on to shore took a while even between the three of them. By the time it was done exhaustion had truly set in. Zudal dug out the blanket from the emergency kit and they spread it out on the sand, and slept their first night as a family with the boat blocking the breeze from the sea at their backs. Farrha woke first to a pinch from a curious crab. The sun was high in the sky, and the white sand was almost blinding in the daylight. The scattered palm trees didn't help much. Beyond that was the forest they'd seen from the boat. 'We should go there first. We need to find somewhere to drink before we setup a proper lair.' She thought. Scanning the beach both ways she saw nothing but sand, and the occasional crab and seabird. She smirked, she had been merciful enough. Bunching up into a ball, she gathered a breath and leapt into the air- "MORNING!" She yelled at the top of her lungs. Layem and Zudal screamed in alarm. Then Zudal rolled dramatically up against the boat, crests folded forward to keep the sun out of her eyes. "Farr..." Layem groaned, wiping his face, "why??" "We need to get water, and you've got to be hungry! Come onnnn let's explore!" Farrha replied before flapping off up the beach to that tantalizing forest. Layem got to his feet and stretched before looking back at Zudal, snoring cartoonishly and laying limp on the blanket, half under the boat. He rolled his eyes. "Come onnn Zuzu don't ya wanna have a look around?" He implored. "Nooooooo." she whined. "It's too bright! And Don't ever!" "Hmm too bad Zuzu, you heard Farr, we've gotta eat!" He replied. He then plucked her tail in one forepaw and stomped up the beach in the direction Farrha took off for, dragging the Mirror behind him. Eventually Zudal gave up on sleeping and walked for herself, sulking in his shadow. Farrha had waited for them at the treeline, and together the 3 of them braved the rainforest proper. They found it dark, and dense immediately. Magic tinged the air as well. The sounds of the rainforest immediately drowned out the waves and seabirds they'd heard on the beach. Bugs buzzed, birds chirped, and animals skittered away from them into the greenery. Finding no immediate source of water, they kept going deeper, doing their best to keep going straight. Eventually they found a river, and following it left, a lake at the base of a waterfall. Perfect! They lounged by the lake for a while, drinking and swimming in the clear blue water. but soon their stomachs bothered them again. The dragons took a trip back to the beach to get their supplies and to think. They'd need traps, and bait for small things. And they hadn't seen much bigger then a submanticore in the rainforest so far. They found the boat as they'd left it. Now they needed to grab all they could and move it to the lake. They gathered up the sandy blanket, grabbed the emergency kit, stripped the boat of all the rope they could find, and took the sail from it's base. Splitting the items between them they left for their first trip back to the lake as the sun started to set. They'd be eating reconstituted rations tonight. Days 9-11: Dawn of a New Day
The young clan spent the rest of the night on the beach.

Bunching up into a ball, she gathered a breath and leapt into the air-

"MORNING!" She yelled at the top of her lungs.
Layem and Zudal screamed in alarm. Then Zudal rolled dramatically up against the boat, crests folded forward to keep the sun out of her eyes.

"Farr..." Layem groaned, wiping his face, "why??"

"We need to get water, and you've got to be hungry! Come onnnn let's explore!"
Farrha replied before flapping off up the beach to that tantalizing forest.

And Don't ever!"
"Hmm too bad Zuzu, you heard Farr, we've gotta eat!" He replied.
