TOPIC | {D&D} Princes of the Apocalypse [OOC]
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ... 13 14
IC thread

A terrible threat gathers in the North. Throughout this region of the Forgotten Realms, savage marauders bring destruction. Monsters are on the prowl, preying on flocks, rampaging through croplands, and attacking homesteads and travelers. In settlements, discord and suspicion grow. Sinister strangers lurk in the shadows, whispering about how everything is soon to change. This year brought an unseasonably warm and stormy spring. Tales spread of flooding, windstorms, wildfires, and tremors.

Hello and welcome to Princes of the Apocalypse, a D&D-based forum roleplay!

What does "D&D-based" mean? This roleplay uses concepts based on Dungeons and Dragons, but adapted and simplified for an online, forum-based format. Additionally, the plot, setting, and other lore for this roleplay comes from the official Princes of the Apocalypse campaign book published by Wizards of the Coast.

This roleplay does have a dungeon master (DM), myself, and will include some dice-rolling. For accountability's sake, the DM will make all dice rolls for players and report successes and failures, as well as roleplaying NPC's and describing the environment. What your characters do in that environment is up to you!

I hope to make this game enjoyable for both D&D veterans and people who have never played before, so please do take a look and consider signing up!

Basic rules

1. Basic RP etiquette -- no godmodding, don't be jerks OOC, etc.
2. This is a fairly literate RP -- please try to use appropriate grammar, spelling, syntax, etc.
3. No hard requirements on post length, but be sure to include some action or dialogue for your DM and/or fellow players to respond to.
4. DM's decisions are final. Note that this game does not use exact D&D rules, so pointing to official D&D materials to argue that something should have gone differently will not avail you.
5. One character per player.
6. Have fun!

The system

When your character does something that significantly interacts with the environment (including NPC's), please bold that action and ping the DM (@Lukra).

- Not all actions require a DM ping, only those that have uncertain outcomes and/or a significant effect.
ex. closing a door under normal circumstances does not require a DM ping; closing a door when an enemy is trying to push through it does

- However, if an action would reveal more information about the environment or require a response from an NPC, please ping the DM.
ex. opening a chest, asking an NPC a question, opening a door to a new room

Skill checks: The outcomes of most actions during the game will be determined by skill checks. When a skill check occurs, the DM will roll a d20, add any applicable bonuses, and compare the result to a predetermined difficulty check (DC) for that action.

- Applicable bonuses: each player's character sheet determines the bonuses they receive for each skill and ability. When players take an action, the DM will judge which skill or ability applies to determining their success.
ex. when a player breaks down a door, the skill check is based on Strength; when a player climbs a cliff, the skill check is based on Acrobatics

Combat: Combat in this roleplay is considerably simplified from D&D combat, as this roleplay's focus is on story elements rather than the technical side of D&D. Players should write their actions in combat as a series of attacks, and the DM will determine via d20 rolls how successful these attacks are.

- Rather than use hit points and damage numbers, the DM will judge based on the attacks made and roll successes what injuries player characters and enemies receive and how these injuries affect them.
- Rather than using an initiative system, players may respond to posts at any time -- the DM will determine the order in which attacks occur and write responses accordingly.

Sample posts (These posts are intentionally quite short and devoid of detail, for the sake of demonstrating the system. Posts in the actual roleplay should be a bit more fleshed out.) WARNING: D&D-typical violence. If you are not able to handle a PG-13 level of violence and gore, please do not sign up for this roleplay.
Roll: 16 + 3 (Sleight of Hand) Success!
John successfully picks the lock! The door swings open, revealing a small room containing a wooden table and two chairs. The head goes one way, the body another, and John's path into the room is left clear. The second bandit screams at the sight of his friend's death and grabs a crossbow from the table, shooting a bolt at John. John rolls Dexterity but fails to evade the crossbow -- it hits him in the shoulder, leaving a painful wound.
Hey! I have never played D&D but I am very interested in joining! So apologies if I ask a lot of questions. But I would very much like to join. I should have a sheet out later on. Have a bit of a cold and waiting for the medicine to kick in

And I know I will have questions later when my head is a bit clearer, so it is okay if I ask them through PM?

*peeks in* D&D you say....

Is this gonna be just strictly forum based or are we gonna use voices as well? .o. I might be interested in joining but it might take me a bit to do a character sheet as this would be my fourth game overall.
