**Partial victory achieved! Thank you admins for listening to everyone's requests. I hope you will consider the other suggestions made in this thread as well, as there still remain some serious health concerns regarding flashing/shaking animations, lack of accessibility for screen-readers and people with health issues and problems triggered by repetitive mouse utilization. From Xhaztol here:
Regarding parallax visual effects in the Coliseum We have removed parallax visual effects from the following venues: Scorched Forest: Embers Boreal Wood: Snow Kelp Beds: Bubbles We understand that these effects were causing eye strain to some of our users.
Despite this small victory, there still remain some unsolved problems, and so I will continue adding to this thread and sharing testimonials from people with serious health concerns, especially those that remain unresolved. ------------------------------ The Coliseum has multiple serious accessibility issues that need to be addressed. The number of threads requesting the same exact improvements for both medical and other reasons are pretty numerous, ranging from 1-34 pages of replies, and going back as far as June 2013 (maybe earlier). [s]39 threads and counting[/s] Now 40. But admins have only replied to those concerns with 'post in the suggestion forum' so far. So I have compiled a summary and list of the threads I've found already existing in the suggestions forum suggesting things that would improve accessibility, for their (and our) reference. Please let me know if I need to add anything or add your own links to threads I have missed. I went through all 210 pages of the suggestion forums looking for these, but I'm sure I've missed some. **EDIT- I have now added a testimonials section to boost important comments from the replies in this thread, specifically those regarding medical problems with these areas of the coliseum. If you would like me to remove your comment from this post just let me know! ----------------------------------- Summary of suggestions:

Make an option to toggle off the boreal wood snow and the water effect in the kelp beds, as well as the ember effects in the Scorched Forest.
Make an option to toggle off ALL animations in the Coliseum.
Create text only version or other version that is accessible for screen readers.
Make keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys available to users.
Remove overall bubble effect in kelp beds or increase visibility/color differentiation.
Reasons:

Boreal wood snow effect and water effect in the kelp beds causes seizures, nausea, dizziness, and headaches.
Shaking and flashing animations can also cause seizures, nausea and headaches.
Playing the coliseum is impossible when using a screen-reader (and other parts of the site are very difficult as well).
Being forced to use the mouse causes repetitive stress injuries, pain and discomfort, as well as exacerbates pre-existing pain conditions and medical problems.
The kelp beds are very difficult to see because of the overall bubble effect washing everything out, making it very hard to play for color blind or people who have difficulty seeing.
Make text larger and general coloration more visible/less subtle.
---------------------- Testimonials:
The frustration from the staff not saying anything on this BESIDES "We don't want to ruin the charm of the coli" is just...it makes me fuming mad. Over the past month, I've become physically weaker because of sickness. Before that I still had chronic migraines, so with both of these coming into account- I cannot play this game anymore. I have too many dragons to feed myself, but none I can bring myself to get rid of, and I can't get enough food/treasure from gathering alone. I used to be able to support myself well by playing the coli, but now I can't play it at all because of all the mousing around and recent personal events. I've been begging for visual options for about as long as I've been playing. I am NOT going to do something if it causes me physical pain. And the more and more the staff says NOTHING about fixing or even that they've SEEN these threads is incredibly angering. Luckily I've gotten by from the generosity of the community, which is just continues to amaze me and be thankful for. But this site can't continue from just its friendly user-base. If the staff keeps up the attitude and lack of communication towards it, everyone will get fed up and leave. This entire situation just continues to boggle me, as I've had such positive and transparent experiences with game companies in the past.

-gives this thread my full support- Boreal Woods has already given me a seizure because of the snow. In the other parts of the Coliseum, because of the flashing animations, if I play too long, I can have a seizure. It gives me eye strain, migraines, and makes me feel dizzy or sick to play too long. (I'm autistic too, so that might be playing a part in it, I don't know). And I can't play for longer than five minutes without getting intense wrist pain. :/

As someone who suffers from severe chronic migraines myself, I definitely support a better coli visual experience.

@doodlemonchelle Well, like many others this issue is personal. I have nystagmus (it's involuntary twitching of my eyeballs, like a rapid darting from one side to the other) and the snow effects kickstarted seizures twice. If the twitching happens too often, I could have permanent damage to my ocular nerves. Repetitive moving details that aren't the main focus of a scene are something that triggers it.

@doodlemonchelle Not a problem at all. Every thread of this nature will have my support. I get migraines and have had concerning eye twitches start while playing in Boreal Woods or from repeated lightning attacks by the monsters. Even without that problem, I - like you - would feel that this should have been addressed long before the naming issue (or any other) because it involves medical safety for many people. Not to mention players for whom the animations cause unbearable lag and computer strain, rendering the Coliseum unplayable. Maybe with enough people roaring about this problem, something will be done.

I support the toggle feature for the animations. I understand that the animators worked and probably continue to work hard, but the health and safety of the players should come first. I have the 3D turned off on my 3DS at all times, because my eyes I can't handle it. I do have motion sickness from both my mom's and dad's side of the family. I have to take motion sickness pills on long car rides. I don't want to have to take the motion sickness pills to play/fight in the coliseum of your website. I will be bumping similar topics in the suggestion section. I believe that this is one of the more important suggestions that the admins should look at. Everyone in these topics love your website, and would like to continue using certain features of your website. We know that you care about and listen to your users, and I thank you all. We ask that you consider adding an animation toggle feature to the coliseum.

100% support. I usually have to choose not to spend any time in the coliseum, as I'm an artist by trade and the coli brings about wrist pains and eye strain like I've never experienced before. Coli play also heavily influences migraine aura and full blown migraines, the boreal woods and kelp beds especially. These are all problems anyone can suffer from, barriers for players with other problems are likely unimaginably higher. Being able to grind the coli at least every once in awhile is important to enjoyable game play. It shouldn't be something players put off for fear of pain, distress, harm or even permanent damage. A player shouldn't have to slog through actual, physical pain to enjoy a basic function of the game. Accessibility and usability of basic features like this should be top priority for involved staff.

@doodlemonchelle I, too, am autistic (or at least SPD) and have issues with the flashing and shaking and snowflakes. Here's a copy-pasta of my issues that I outlined in another thread: "I can't play Boreal Woods at night because of this. I don't know what exactly causes it, but I become dizzy and unable to do much of anything if I don't lie down in the dark for a while. It may be related to the problem I have with things that move quickly, especially small things; even the animation in something like Frozen is overloading (ASD-related in all likelihood). The snowflakes in Boreal Woods are awful, really. The contrast between them and the dark background is probably causing the majority of my issues with them, as the other effects, while still somewhat overwhelming, do not contrast that much with the background."

@doodlemonchelle i am also in the boat of being autistic and extremely oversensitive to stimulation. i went into the boreal woods the other day to see what it was like, and from one battle, one battle, i got extremely dizzy and nauseous and had a killer headache. i also have motion sickness, which probably contributed. not only that, but i am an artist. i am a freelancer and i make money from my work that is sometimes incredibly necessary for supporting myself in terms of transitioning costs and such that my family will not accomodate. art is also an incredibly personal thing to me that i could not bear to lose. because of all the complaints of chronic pain from using the coli, i am terrified of grinding for the fear i will lose my hands to a browser game. a fear that could so easily be remedied if somebody went in and coded keyboard controls. i would go as far as to say that FR needs to hire some coders SPECIFICALLY to fix these serious concerns with the coli. your game should not be causing dire medical complications for people, and your members should not be afraid of using your site incase they suffer injury, seizures, or anything else. get your act together.

@doodlemonchelle Well, it's been brought up times and times again but it's still a problem so yep. Let's bring it up once more. I have mild RSI symptoms but they've never been much of a problem until now. I'd get numbness and pain if I played on my 3DS or 5 hours, but then 5 hours of 3DS is a little bit overkill. I do however get wrist pains in the coli after as little as 10-20 minutes of training. Which is… ridiculously high, compared to anything else I could imagine myself doing. And seeing as the admins have stated (not onsite, ofc) that software that implements keybinding is against the ToS, I'm a little bit screwed here.

Support. And if you'd like another testimonial. I've had to switch to using my middle finger instead of my index finger to click on things around the site. Two holidays back I had an unwanted 5-day break from work and it landed on the holiday, so cue my first time doing a grind-fest. I regret doing so still. The triangle-click motion was so repetitive (though in my case I manage to turn it into a more of a upwards curve to stop my wrist from moving too much, and left the mouse control to my fingertips), that I started to develop a grinding sensation and pretty considerable pain in my distal metacarpal phalangeal joint (the one that joins the index finger to the palm). I'm also a typist, so suddenly having my index finger on my dominant hand go out was also an "Oh s***" moment. It's been about two months, and with a regimen of stretching, anti-inflammatory medication, and some hopefully cartilage-rebuilding stuff the pain is gone. But if enough typing it tries to flare up again. So please, can we have some arrow-key/keyboard controls? I've been typing for more than 2 decades and have never had any issues with a keyboard..... but 5-intense days on a mouse....

[Re: the overall bubble effect in the kelp beds as well as visibility of bubbles in tidal trouble] @doodlemonchelle: That's wonderful! I'm glad they're working on it. Whether something is faded or has a film on it, I have trouble reading it. The colors need to be more distinct for me or have a barrier of separation. (Like putting a black border on bubble letters.) That's why the washed out look the Kelp Beds has with the giant bubble over everything is hard for me to see.

Pushing this to the first page because MY ARM IS ABOUT TO FALL OFF and I seriously need keyboard controls to be able to play the Coliseum at all. I suffer from a thing called Bursitis, and interestingly enough the FR Coliseum is the only game/computer activity that agitates my shoulder so much that the inflammation breaks out. Clearly something is really really not very ergonomic about the game interface and mouse control.

I have a damaged nerve in my right wrist (it was crushed due to other medical issues) and I've lost a lot of the feeling in most of my fingers and they don't move as well as they used to. The feeling I do have the most, however, is pain. I use a special mouse so I don't have to move my wrist too much, but moving my thumb back and forth isn't much better. Too much strain on my wrist could crush the nerve further, causing more damage and more loss of feeling and function. I'd love to be able to have some hotkeys for the coliseum.

Thank you all for making this thread, sharing your experiences and giving testimonials. Accessibility is so important and often overlooked. I have a visual impairment, and after a long day of looking at things, I get headaches from long exposure to bright lights. Visual stimulus (such as flashes) are highly uncomfortable to look at. I've gotten used to looking away from certain animations but there are still many things that could be done to make the coli more visually-friendly to me and my fellow players, especially those with seizures or other conditions they could be harmed by. The more accessibility options, the better. I would also love to see keyboard support, as the repetitive clicking on my trackpad hurts my hands after a while.

Not sure where to place this, but.... As someone assigned male at birth, I have protanopia (red-green colorblindness). The thing is, unlike deuteranopia (blue-yellow, basically the same thing) shades of color are affected by me. Look up protanopia color spectrum and you'll get the rough idea--what for you is bright read is for me darkish grey. Now, you can imagine the strain this puts on me for numerous sites. Most, by chance or by knowledge, are fairly colorblind-friendly. But there's some that could be better. I love the Coli. It's an ingenious idea and it's really fun for me. However, with numerous stages--Scorched Forest and Woodland Path being the main two--things are either all white or all black, and I can't differentiate colors. The monsters usually stick out, but it's very frustrating. I'd really like an option for a black-white coli background, or a general colorblind-friendly mode that can let me play without headaches.

As someone who has RSI in my right wrist due to my job, I was almost dependent on using a program which linked my mouse movement to a joystick for Coliseum grinding. The recent decision that such programs are against the ToU has set me back. While I've found an almost acceptable set up so that I can keep grinding dragons, within an hour I will have symptom flares that make continuing on rather hard. Coliseum hotkeys or shortcuts so that I could mainly employ my left hand would be an absolute wonder.

Thank you for making this thread. I'm glad to see that they've removed some of the visual effects; let's hope for more changes soon! I have joint issues that make prolonged mouse use quite painful, and the repetitive movements of the Coliseum aggravate the pain far more quickly than regular use. I can only play in the Coliseum in short stints, with long breaks, without risking long-lasting pain in my arm and hand. I would love to spend more time in there, but without keyboard support, I can't. I also often have to spend a lot of time lying down throughout the day, and if it had keyboard support, I could play the Coliseum on my laptop. That's certainly not as important as any of the serious medical issues raised in this thread, but it would be wonderful for me as a way of keeping myself entertained when I'm too ill to sit up at the desk. Just another reason why keyboard support (along with all the other suggested improvements) would be greatly appreciated.

oh....... after reading this thread, now i know why i got that extreme pain on my wrist during ice dominance push (christmas in july dom push where we lost against plague uwu) so you see, i wasn't that much of a hardcore grinding. i was just doing train, exalt, break, train, exalt, break, repeat for a couple of hours. but on the last day of the push, i was train-exalting for 4 hours straight and i got this extreme pain on my wrist that i had to stop playing. it was very terrifying because i was a design major and i need my dominant hand to draw and type + i was only 1 month away from my thesis deadline. i never play at coliseum again ever since. i don't care if i can get a lot of holiday currency from coliseum, i'm not going to experience that pain again. now that i read this thread, i know i'm not the only one who experience the same pain. so, yay for keyboard click option!

Could I add something? This is relatively unimportant compared to the other issues in this thread, but I'd appreciate it if they made the text size on the experience bar a few points larger. I'm near-sighted (not even especially severely), and even with my glasses on I have to lean my face right up next to the screen to read how my dragons are doing on experience if the purple completed part is behind the numbers. I support the rest of the thread as well. I've gotten around most of the wrist issues by using a make-shift splint, but it really shouldn't be necessary to splint your wrist to play a point-and-click game.

I've never played in most areas, but as a person with tritanopia colors mean a lot.... and similar colors suck. Especially green and blue. It's hard being a tritanope sometimes. (Yes, that is a rainbow for me.)

Absolutely support all of this. Also, I don't know if it's been added by anyone else, but I would love to be able to turn off that dome in the kelp beds. I can deal with anything, even with the snow and the bubbles and embers, but that dome! Especially in the night version, I'm having a hard time seeing anything at all and if I focus too hard, I just get severe headaches and dizziness (and I end up seeing everything very blurry). And this is coming from a person with normally no eye strain issues at all. (It probably doesn't help that one of my coli grinding teams is dragons with shades of blue and teal)
---------------------- Compiled list of pre-existing threads Specifying medical purposes for the changes

Remove Bubble Overlay (2 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?p=mb&board=sug&id=1203366
Boreal wood snow causes seizures (6 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1202054&p=mb
Toggle snowfall (1 page): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1202083&p=mb
Coliseum hotkeys (8 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1023656&p=mb
Coli accessibility (3 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1201141&p=mb
Turn off snowfall effect in boreal wood (4 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1169425&p=mb
Toggle snow in the boreal woods (3 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1201470&p=mb
Boreal woods snowfall toggle option (4 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1143633&p=mb
Option to toggle snow for boreal woods (4 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1106428&p=mb
Disable snow in boreal wood (12 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1084227&p=mb
Option to turn of coliseum animations (1 page): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1156262&p=mb
[Coli] Keyboard controls for coliseum (5 pages): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1120288&p=mb
Coliseum and RSI (1 page): http://flightrising.com/main.php?board=sug&id=1161547&p=mb
Key input for Coli; save our wrists!

Quote:
Regarding parallax visual effects in the Coliseum

We have removed parallax visual effects from the following venues:

Scorched Forest: Embers
Boreal Wood: Snow
Kelp Beds: Bubbles

We understand that these effects were causing eye strain to some of our users. For the time being, these visual effects will remain off until we are able to provide a long-term solution. We apologize for those that were adversely affected by these visuals -- ideally we would like to seek a solution where this can be toggled by the user at their own preference.

If you do not immediately see the removal of these effects, please clear your browser cache so that the Coliseum application will recognize the change.

Despite this small victory, there still remain some unsolved problems, and so I will continue adding to this thread and sharing testimonials from people with serious health concerns, especially those that remain unresolved.

The Coliseum has multiple serious accessibility issues that need to be addressed.

The number of threads requesting the same exact improvements for both medical and other reasons are pretty numerous, ranging from 1-34 pages of replies, and going back as far as June 2013 (maybe earlier). 39 threads and counting Now 40.

Summary of suggestions:
 • Make an option to toggle off the boreal wood snow and the water effect in the kelp beds, as well as the ember effects in the Scorched Forest.
 • Make an option to toggle off ALL animations in the Coliseum.
 • Create text only version or other version that is accessible for screen readers.
 • Make keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys available to users.
 • Remove overall bubble effect in kelp beds or increase visibility/color differentiation.

Reasons:
 • Boreal wood snow effect and water effect in the kelp beds causes seizures, nausea, dizziness, and headaches.
 • Shaking and flashing animations can also cause seizures, nausea and headaches.
 • Playing the coliseum is impossible when using a screen-reader (and other parts of the site are very difficult as well).
 • Being forced to use the mouse causes repetitive stress injuries, pain and discomfort, as well as exacerbates pre-existing pain conditions and medical problems.
 • The kelp beds are very difficult to see because of the overall bubble effect washing everything out, making it very hard to play for color blind or people who have difficulty seeing.
 • Make text larger and general coloration more visible/less subtle.

-gives this thread my full support-

Boreal Woods has already given me a seizure because of the snow.

Well, like many others this issue is personal.

Snek wrote on 2014-09-29 18:43:55:

Not a problem at all.

MyWife wrote on 2014-09-29 20:09:59:
I support the toggle feature for the animations. I understand that the animators worked and probably continue to work hard, but the health and safety of the players should come first.
I have the 3D turned off on my 3DS at all times, because my eyes I can't handle it. I do have motion sickness from both my mom's and dad's side of the family. I have to take motion sickness ***** on long car rides. I don't want to have to take the motion sickness ***** to play/fight in the coliseum of your website.
Cockatrice wrote on 2014-09-29 20:19:34:

TheCorrosion wrote on 2014-09-29 19:14:46:

The contrast between them and the dark background is probably causing the majority of my issues with them, as the other effects, while still somewhat overwhelming, do not contrast that much with the background."
yokare wrote on 2014-09-29 21:16:15:

Well, it's been brought up times and times again but it's still a problem so yep.

[Re: the overall bubble effect in the kelp beds as well as visibility of bubbles in tidal trouble]
@doodlemonchelle: That's wonderful! I'm glad they're working on it.

Ayla wrote on 2014-10-06 02:55:12:

Just another reason why keyboard support (along with all the other suggested improvements) would be greatly appreciated.

oh.......

after reading this thread, now i know why i got that extreme pain on my wrist during ice dominance push (christmas in july dom push where we lost against plague uwu)

so you see, i wasn't that much of a hardcore grinding. i was just doing train, exalt, break, train, exalt, break, repeat for a couple of hours. but on the last day of the push, i was train-exalting for 4 hours straight and i got this extreme pain on my wrist that i had to stop playing. it was very terrifying because i was a design major and i need my dominant hand to draw and type + i was only 1 month away from my thesis deadline. i never play at coliseum again ever since. i don't care if i can get a lot of holiday currency from coliseum, i'm not going to experience that pain again.

now that i read this thread, i know i'm not the only one who experience the same pain. so, yay for keyboard click option!
Owlcatpup wrote on 2014-10-21 08:54:37:
Could I add something? This is relatively unimportant compared to the other issues in this thread, but I'd appreciate it if they made the text size on the experience bar a few points larger. I'm near-sighted (not even especially severely), and even with my glasses on I have to lean my face right up next to the screen to read how my dragons are doing on experience if the purple completed part is behind the numbers.

I support the rest of the thread as well. I've gotten around most of the wrist issues by using a make-shift splint, but it really shouldn't be necessary to splint your wrist to play a point-and-click game.
Anikee wrote on 2014-10-21 18:31:39:
I've never played in most areas, but as a person with tritanopia colors mean a lot.... and similar colors suck. Especially green and blue.

It's hard being a tritanope sometimes.
(Yes, that is a rainbow for me.)
Alexandros wrote on 2014-10-21 10:55:09:
Absolutely support all of this.

Also, I don't know if it's been added by anyone else, but I would love to be able to turn off that dome in the kelp beds. I can deal with anything, even with the snow and the bubbles and embers, but that dome! Especially in the night version, I'm having a hard time seeing anything at all and if I focus too hard, I just get severe headaches and dizziness (and I end up seeing everything very blurry). And this is coming from a person with normally no eye strain issues at all.

(It probably doesn't help that one of my coli grinding teams is dragons with shades of blue and teal)

Sending my support in for this as well. While thankfully most of these problems do not directly apply to me, they do to a number of users- this needs to be addressed.

I would especially like keyboard controls for the coli, as playing the coli for too long definitely pains my wrist.

@Pokemon @inklizard @Cassonade @Snek @Nenya @RoseInProgress @SnowAnubis @EnchantingCurse Thank you all for your support! And I just hope this gets their attention :/

I'm pretty new here truthfully, and didn't even know the suggestions had been made. When I saw how they're responding to something like banned names before this I have to say I was pretty appalled. Especially when it's being put off for something as ridiculous as 'charming aesthetics', and has been for over a year.

I am autistic and light sensitive (though I definitely do not have problems as severe as seizures), and also suffer chronic pain that is severely triggered by coliseum grinding at times :/ I can usually last about 30-45 minutes at a time before all the flashing and shaking and animation effects start to get to me and all the mousing makes my hand joints stop working. And to be quite honestly its completely unnecessary.

When I saw your reply @Maximum124 I got started thinking maybe it would be good to quote it and perhaps others commenting here and elsewhere talking about the trouble they've had, in a sort of testimonials section perhaps (if thats alright with you of course)? The whole point of the thread is to boost the voices that haven't been heard on the topic, so I'm not sure if this might help put those voices forward? Hm
@Pokemon @inklizard @Cassonade @Snek @Nenya @RoseInProgress @SnowAnubis @EnchantingCurse Thank you all for your support! And I just hope this gets their attention :/
