The cooldowns are long to keep the dragon population from getting way too big. It's already huge, with much more supply than demand.

When you've got more space and more dragons, you breed pairs much more frequently, and the time does not seem as long. It takes a while to reach that point, but--well, half my lair is ready to breed now, I think.

No. The breeding cool down is there to keep certain breeds more rare and ATTEMPT to keep the dragon population under some semblance of control. There is no time limit on this game. Besides that, the wait time isn't very long at all.

Get dragons with lower cooldowns. Tundras, Guardians Faes and Mirrors have a 15 day cooldown.

No no, this wouldn't be a good thing to add. The breeding system in place right now is here for a reason, why certain dragons have longer/shorter cool downs is due to the rarity of the dragon and keeping the dragon population from growing way too quickly. If you have a nest though you can guy a boon from the gem market place that hatches the best immediately, but that's as close as the site can get to what you are suggesting without redoing the whole breeding system.

if no one minds me asking, what's the significance of a high dragon population?

Prices in the auction house, mostly. Right now, dragons are far too difficult to sell unless they have art or lore. Unpopular colors and genes are absolutely worthless as anything but exalt fodder, and popular colors and genes are overbred due to the demand for them, thus making them worthless as well in the long run. In the end, everything's exalt fodder level unless it has a new gene, and even that only lasts for a short while before the fad dies (time varies depending on popularity, see Cherub versus Giraffe for example).

No support.

Buy dragons with shorter cooldowns. Buy RTB dragons from the AH. Wait it out. Buy a boon of fertility to speed up your nests.

No the cool downs were created for a reasons as stated by other comments. If you want dragons faster then get dragons with a low cool down period and use a hatching boon to hatch your nest faster.

Sorry no. It appears that you have only been here since the last registration window, so you have yet to experience a large lair of dragons. As your lair expands you will find out by having all the various breed groups

Plentiful Breeds (Tundra, Fae, Guardian, Mirror) 15 Day cooldown
Common Breeds (Snapper, Pearlcatcher, Spiral, Ridgeback) 20 Day cooldown
Uncommon Breed (Skydancer) 25 day cooldown
Limited Breeds (Imperial, Nocture) 30 Day cooldown
Rare Breeds (Coatl, Wildclaw) 35 Day cooldown.

With multiple pairs from above as you expand your lair more and acquire more dragons and more there will be less and less times you will find that you do not have at least a pair or two that are ready to breed.

There does not need to be anything to speed up cool downs because they are set by breed group and they help control an already overpopulated dragon market.

As your lair grows you may find that you have so many pairs that you may not want to breed as much. Breeding is a part of the game and kind of a key thing for newer players, but even then it is something completely optional and anyone can choose not to breed just as easily as they choose to breed.
