I have no idea if anyone suggested this as of yet but it doesn't appear to be on the mods list so here I go. I think it'd be awesome if the lair got an upgrade where of course you still have the familiars and everything but when you put them with a dragon they appear like a piece of apparel on your dragon. Like either laying next to the dragon or on the dragon or even playing with the dragon. Of course still keeping the original function of familiars of course.

There are way too many familiars to do new art for them all. As much as I love this idea, I don't think it would be practical to ask the mods to take on a project of this size. So, unfortunately, no support.
Possible compromise: only festival familiars have this feature. Still a big job, but not impossible!

With whatever it is turned on or equipped, it would put the already-made familiar image next to the dragon, or maybe behind the dragon or in front of it. This would mean that you could have a familiar with your dragon, or not. This would be the familiar equipped.

While I think it would be great to have 'apparel' familiars I don't think they should be tied to having the true familiar item or not. IE make a series of 'sprites' where people can buy them and place them on dragons (however they should not have the name sprite appear in their name at all, just basically use the artwork/style) or coliseum familiars etc...

I wouldn't mind awakening the familiar resulting in an apparel version being awarded, as extra incentive to bond. I wouldn't want it to be automatic, though.

However, there should be an option to toggle it on and off. I also don't think the artists should have to make new familiar art to fit every dragon. If it's possible to make them look good with minor edits to the current art, I could see this working~
