@Xhaztol @Mutron (apologies if the pings are unwanted)
Since we're to post suggested tweaks to the keyboard controls here instead of the bug tracker thread, here's a little one (though I do think there should be a centralised Coli Beta Tweak Suggestion thread):
(These might be somewhat influenced by my thousands of MMO (LotRO) hours, lol)
I've been messing about with the keyboard controls for some half hour or so now, and have three small suggestions, if custom keybinding cannot become a thing.
1 - QWERTY/12345
Currently enemy selection is Q, W, E, and I presume also E and R for larger groups. First, I'd like to suggest testing these functions mapped instead to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, which should actually only be a minor difference aside from swapping to numbers and adding a row of space between the keys.
The extra space would mimic what's seen on the screen with regards to the menu vs the enemy positions on the field of battle.
I personally found my fingers automatically seeking 1/2/3 (the set above QWERTY, not the number pad which some keyboards don't even have) when selecting enemies. This could just be a muscle memory thing, or it could be a subconscious numbering of the enemies based on their position and associating that with the buttons.
2 - Spacebar/Escape for auto-select and/or proceed
My main suggestion is an 'attack nearest' button, mapped to spacebar or enter. This would auto-select the nearest enemy in the Q/1 - W/2 - E/3 - R/4 order, or could even be used to instead attack the most recently targeted enemy with some more code.
The same button could also be used to select 'Fight On!' with Esc used to return to the Main Menu.
I can see where there might be concern with this reducing the effort used for Coli battles, however, since it could essentially be used to spam instead of taking the instant to consider the enemies.
3 - Keys for Select a Stage screen
Basically, using a set of keys to choose which stage to fight in. There are sixteen tiles to select from per page, and these could be assigned with the following pattern:
1 2 3 4
Q W E R
A S D F
Z X C V
That would be 1 for the Training Fields, R for Redrock Cove, and V for Next Page. The venue picked by each key would change as venues are changed or added, but with a key for each of the sixteen tiles it adds the keyboard controls to one segment earlier of the Coliseum. Though this could also be applied to the rest of the interface from the beginning, too.
The keys chosen for the keyboard controls are overall well-picked. When I Coli I use a graphics tablet because it's fast and I don't have a lot of time, but keyboard controls is one of the big things I've been looking forward to with the revamp as it's more fluid and not as hard on the wrist.
