I suggest that FR sets a time limit for dead accounts and if the time limit is reached and they have not visited their lair yet, Flight Rising could send an email to the user as a warning. Then the staff can delete the account, therefore making more username space.

Or new players can come up with something original for their name. We don't need graverobbing. And much bigger online games with millions of users only allow unique account and even character names either. It works.

By implementing the feature where players that have been gone for 45 or more days get their lairs fully fed, I think the precedence has been set by staff that they want players to feel like they can return to the game after being away for a period of time.
Absolutely no support for any modifications being made to accounts of players that take a break.
I would only support name chanced/clearings of accounts that were locked for scamming and so on, where there is absolutely zero possibility of the owner getting the account back.

I'd like a way for players to delete their own accounts, freeing up their username, but only on a voluntary basis. No support accounts being altered by the staff just because someone wants to grab up an existing username.

For all we know no such thing exists. There is no limit of time or modi that would influence an appeal. So when an account from 2013 was banned for cheating an appeal can still be issued by the account owner now or even in 20 years. Thus no account is "save for taking" since an appeal can happen at any time.

Just because a user doesn't play doesn't mean they won't come back at some point. There's plenty of players who have gone on long hiatuses.
The only thing I would support is removing the name on a perma locked account. However, you can view that as an additional punishment to the banned player if you want: the banned player can't reuse their name.

I know too many people who have gone on long hiatuses, including years long, and come back, to be able to support this in good conscience, so no support here. Yeah it sucks when there's a UN you want taken by someone else, but if something happened to me where I couldn't get on FR for 6+ months and I came back to find my username taken or my items gone or whatnot, that would suck too. There's always the option to spell that desired username differently or add numbers or something else.
