TOPIC | Option to set Metric to Imperial System
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ... 10 11
I suggest for there to be a setting in account settings to switch between Metric System and Imperial System. I know most of the world uses Metric, but there's also plenty of people who use Imperial System, and it'd be nice to have something to swich between Metric and Imperial System.

Thoughts?

As an option I support this. It would be nice for all players to be able to choose which numbers make sense to them.

If writers are supposed to "show not tell," why are we called "storytellers" and not "storyshow-ers"?
If options are possible sure. If this is again one of these all or nothing questions I'd rather stay with the metric systems. There is litterally only 3 countries in the world still using this outdated system - and they are not really worth mentioning even populationwise. They make up only 5% of the world population.

I thought you guys meant measuring things by the length of imperial dragons for a moment.

Nah, I like the use of the metric system more. If anything, Flight Rising can help folks understand the metric system a tiny tiny bit better.
Nah, I like the use of the metric system more. If anything, Flight Rising can help folks understand the metric system a tiny tiny bit better.
By making the numbers even more mythical? I don't have an opinion either way, but this is not a good reason to keep only the metric system. Spirals and Guardians do not exist, and using a system of measurement that someone doesn't understand won't help them picture how long they are... An Imperial is still just bigger than a Guardian, 3000 > 2000, no matter what unit you're using. The only reason you'd want to use a system you're more familiar with is to have comparison (that is, "My Guardian is ten meters long? She wouldn't even fit in my room!"). Someone using the Imperial system isn't going to have a comparison for metric, even after they're exposed to measuring Spirals in meters. Because no one walks up to a bookshelf like, "You know, I think this shelf is as long as my Spiral. It'll totally fit in my room."

I would prefer being able to change it. I use my dragons listed stats in their lore and for their art. It's annoying to have to constantly look up how to convert between them.

Nobody wants to tell you why discipline is so important. Discipline is the strongest form of self-love. It is ignoring current pleasures for bigger rewards to come. It's loving yourself enough to give yourself everything you've ever wanted.
No support for the defense of Imperial as a system of measure, but a toggle wouldn't take overly-much coding. Even if Americans don't form a majority of the site's userbase (I'm actually not sure on the demographics, nor am I planning to debate them) but it does improve accessibility.

That said, there's a lot to do with site accessibility (especially for motor- and visually-impaired users, and mobile device users) that are still on the docket, that coding specifically for a randomized, non-inheritable lore statistic seems... a little irrelevant?

So support, I guess? Just don't change the default system to Imperial.

No support.
It's not necessary, since most of the people here are using the metric system. Also its kind of a good training ^^

How does anyone know that "most" of the players are from a country that uses metric? And "good training"? For what? Someone forcing their culture on mine? If "good training" is an argument, we could make the same argument that forcing everyone to use imperial is "good training" then.

I don't see how having an option is a bad thing.

America (and others) really can't convert from imperial to metric. Just look at our houses. We have pipes, wiring, nuts and bolts, paneling and everything designed for imperial. Even if we fazed out imperial in favor of metric, everything we have would still be imperial. And then, down the road, what do you do if you need a 3/4 inch pipe, but the hardware store now only sells centimeters? Replace -all- the plumbing in your house? And the plumbing that connects your house to the road? And the entire city? And that's just one small aspect of life that has measurements.

I'm sorry our culture is different from yours. But please be a little considerate without the superior attitude.

I can understand this being a severely low priority over many needed features...I just don't like the elitism I'm feeling from some posts.

I think you're misreading my tone.

And also, there have been implications that imperial users need to be "trained." That's not exactly a friendly statement. Is the statement "it would be good training" the same as saying "your system is wrong"? No. But is it implying one system is superior than another? Yes.

There's also been a statement that my country is "outdated." However, I used an example that shows that the imperial system is thriving in my country and that converting (and thus needing to be "trained") simply isn't feasible.

I don't see such insinuations as opening positive communication. They do come across as elitist at worst and inconsiderate at best (see the bookshelf example on the previous page). That's all the further I'll say as I don't want to derail this topic.

Options literally hurt no one. I don't understand why allowing options that let users make sense of site lore is a bad thing. It goes back to the "I wouldn't use it so no support" argument that pops up from time to time on all suggestions, which just seems narrow to me. I don't use the RP forums, but that doesn't mean I think they shouldn't exist.

As I said before, this is definitely a low priority. Very low. But there's no reason to rag on a different way one country does things.
