When you sell five auctions, you don’t get five pings. You get one “You have five sold auctions” ping. The suggestion here is to do similar for subscribed threads. Instead of five “(name) has replied to (thread)” pings, just give the player one “Five users have replied to (thread).” Pings for different threads would not be merged together.

This would be excellent! It would also be a lot less clutter for the alerts tab. (Though I would prefer if they did not expire the way baldwin notifications do.)

I wouldn't want all the subscription pings mashed together, because sometimes I need to go to a specific post in a sea of rapid fire ones without wasting time scrolling. But I do want any time someone @ 's me on a thread I'm already subscribed to mashed into a single alert instead of getting alerted to the same dang post twice.

I don't subscribe to threads for this very reason. The staff worked so hard to make this a feature and it's not getting used as much as it ought to because people don't want to be over-pinged.
