TOPIC | Hatchling naming suggestion
1 2
I’ve seen so many thread of people asking that naming be required upon hatching and honestly that takes time and most people honestly don’t care if a dragon goes without a name and don’t want to waste time naming fodder.

Well in most of these suggestions I see the usual name is required before you return to your lair page or another common suggestion of naming required for exalting. I honestly feel like I don’t want to waste my time doing either of these, but in each I these threads someone usually pops up and suggests something far greater and more simple for us users.

It goes something like this:
“Instead of all hatchlings automatically being called unnamed how about instead of that hatchlings are given a name from the randomizer and allow unnamed be a usable name. Then each hatchling/dragon still have a one free name change from their given hatch name so if you want you can give a dragon a better name.”

Now this seems like one of the best suggestions I’ve seen to end the controversy of unnamed exalted. Although if implemented I don’t think it should change already exalted dragons and since anyone breeding fodder don’t have to wast time naming hatchlings that are just going to be exalted to exalters being forced to waste time before exalting all newly hatched dragons will already have names and if the Hatcher doesn’t like the name it got when it hatched they still have one free rename before putting their dragon for sale.

But with this we should be able to name dragons unnamed for lore purposes or whatever. And with this big exalters won’t have as much harassment from people over names, and unnamed exalts on offspring lists will be almost nonexistent to dragon pairs in the future unless someone names their dragon unnamed.

So someone tell me how this idea could go wrong other than people purposely naming a dragon unnamed to exalt it as harassment? Because if someone cared about their hatchlings that much and they hatched with a supposedly ugly randomizer name they still have a free name change to fix it before they sell.

This has been suggested before and no support.

1. How do you know whether a dragon has a free name when you buy it?

2. I dislike many names in the generator and would hate to have to use the free rename in order to not see particular names in my lair. I can keep hatchlings for months on end while I train them, so I am often stuck looking at those names. (and yes, I do breed fodder, but I am still picky about the names I give them)

3. It would be a HUGE problem to allow unnamed as a valid name choice with this, because that means any dragon that gets exalted unnamed was named that. This would cause even more problems than now, because it means it is a choice to give it that word as a name.

4. How would this work with the coliseum. Would this register as a true name or would it be like unnamed now, where users couldn't take any hatchlings that still have the free name change into the coliseum?

Frankly, I don't really see why I should be punished with my hatchlings being given random names from a generator I don't like because other people can't be bothered to take care of their own offspring lists. That is what this would feel like to me, because I am usually very picky about the names I give my dragons. I would either have to sit around for months looking at some of the names from the generator, OR I would have to come up with names upon hatching just to make sure I am not looking at that name for months on end.

@Jemadar Well just to test people can still buy renaming scrolls or attempt to get around the unnamed block as this Hatchling below who’s name is Uunnamed which would bother me far greater than lizardbreath or something else odd, I would much prefer proper grammar as unnamed, lizard, shrimp, rex, and spike. As for knowing if a dragon does or doesn’t have a name I believe an icon on the profile page next to the name such as there is to dragons in our lairs who have no name a little pencil or paper with script as seen from the lair page could be visible and visible in the auction house as well to remedy any confusion as well as an auction house filter. While I do see your concerns with that I have in the past bought dragons with odd names and taken months to give them new names so after a while odd names don’t bother me much and if they do bother me I can buy a renaming scroll for dirt cheap if I plan to keep them if not I can easily exalt them without much loss in profits. The coliseum does make me skeptical though I believe with a new naming feature such as this we wouldn’t need a must be named lock on the coliseum since unnamed could be made a choice in name. Your issue with the names though can be considered because while the name generator is pretty bad and often gives horrible names it also gives lots Banned names out left and right, for example I tried to name a dragon a day ago and I either got names I loathed or banned names in fact I got 4 banned names in a row. So the generator could(should be because banned names shouldn’t be appearing in the generator) be adjusted or possibly filtered? Many more suggestions could be made to avoid that issue like filters to naming or someone could have a set list for hatchling names where the hatchlings get a name based on your set name list, such as only celestial beings or Greek gods and goddesses and such. But these are issues that can be fixed or adjusted to add to the suggestion.

You dislke those names (and so do I, and sorry about any typos, I have a cat after the mouse cursor), but others like them. I personally hate any name with 'Fart' in it (except obvious things like farthing etc..) but others think they are hilarious. The same could be said for just about any name out there. So why is it only 'unnamed' that is brought up, and why should one segment of the userbase be able to dictate how other players play the game. For players that dislike unnamed dragons, they already have the mechanic they need: if they hatched the dragon, they can immediately name it using the generator, and if they are thinking about buying the dragon, they can skip it. There is no need for further mechanics, when it is already completely possible to prevent unnamed exalts in your offspring list as it is now. (and to prevent players trying to get around the 'unnamed' ban once a dragon is named, they can also choose not to sell dragons) I don't see why players who either don't care about unnamed dragons in their offspring list or already take measures to prevent it (as I do) need to be affected because another group of players can't be bothered to do so. Because I would prefer to not see unnamed in my offspring list, I name every dragon that leaves my lair. It can take me months to name the dragon, but I do it. I feel that *I*, because I have the problem, should also be the one that is required to 'fix' the problem, and so I do. It shouldn't fall upon your shoulders to 'fix' my problem of not wanting to see unnamed dragons in my offspring list, nor should it fall upon anyone else's. This goes for any name, not just unnamed. If I don't like booplesnoot, then the only person that can fix that is me, I am aware that when I sell a dragon, it can be renamed into a name I dislike, and that is a risk I acknowledge and accept once I hit 'list dragon' on the AH. Even having a specific list wouldn't work. The types of names I want are fantasy names. I do not want real world names, fandom names, animal names, double talk, cutesy, 'joke' names etc... Other players like naming their fodder after flora, or fauna, or things related to their flight, or whatever. So no one list would satisfy everyone, because it is impossible to do so. I can also go through the generator I use (an offline one) and reject 99 out of every 100 names because I am so picky (and yes, that is my problem), so often my hatchlings will remain unnamed for months until I get inspiration for them or decide I REALLY want to toss them in the coliseum, and then I go through the process of naming them. They are my hatchlings, so why shouldn't I have that option? Other players have the exact same options I do, so if they sell their hatchlings unnamed, then that is on them.

Basically to sum up my feelings, I don't feel that unnamed dragons are a 'problem' that need to be fixed. Even if it were a problem to have unnamed hatchlings, users already have the precise tool they need to fix it: the random name generator and using it before they list the dragon for sale.

The only solution to the "I don't like that name" problem would be any form of changing the lists. Either by doing away with the lists (completely or optional), or by being able to give nicknames on your lists.

Otherwise we will never solve the actual problem.

Allow me to further explain, but when I mentioned lists earlier I meant one could pick a list from the generator or lists where you typed in names of your own creation apart from the generator so you would only get names you’d like or prefer to use as opposed to the generator.

And these suggestions are in fact made better by conversing on how to fix the possible issues with them so if the staff do decide to implement something like it they could see our views on different aspects of the idea and how we would fix these issues so they can avoid any big issues like that of the horrific release of the scattersights.

@Mystiek

Except if I could come up with enough names for a list, I could name all my hatchlings instantly myself. That is the whole issue. If these lists were tailored to each individual person, then I am sure each individual person (unless they were ones who don't mind repeating names on their lists, which I prefer not to have) can easily name their own dragons.

I know why the suggestions are made, I just don't think there is a problem to be fixed and even if there is, the mechanic is already in place to do so. With the scattersight thing, the staff already HAD the views of the users, from numerous mutation threads, about how users want more control over their nests and to be able to customize older dragons. Many of the threads about that subject boiled down to exactly that: opt in and able to add mutations to existing dragons. They ignored both of those points.

If the site is going to randomly name dragons upon hatching how is that any different than Unnamed? It might as well be Nafnlaus.

The little scroll is an interesting visual aid. Unfortunately it's not going to help the visually impaired or the newbies who are typically the ones to bring this topic up in Suggestions or Help.

The admins have already ruled on who gets to have the rights to a dragon--the owner and have made clear when the rights of the owner can be superseded.

As far as harassment goes it's only if you're singling out a player with a name. If I'm specifically buying specific people's dragons to exalt Unnamed that's harassment. If I'm buying everyone's dragons to exalt Unnamed that's my gameplay.

Still, I do name every dragon I exalt. Not only because I need a name to train them but because I prefer not to be drowned in "name my dragon requests." Bio notes are never seen by me (especially if I'm sending them to other flights) and I still get pms from players when I buy their Unnamed hatchlings to grow out asking for names.

Why do they think it's easier to pester another player instead of naming themselves?

As far as Unnamed in the offspring list people who grow out fodder to sell and exalters often like this so they can instantly tell if a dragon is an exalt or an impulse buy. Unnamed is convenient for keeping dragons out of the coli list right now (important when you have 200 dragons).

Have you checked the Gem MP for Gene and Breed scrolls before buying an AH listing from me ending in 5g?
