I'm sure my suggestion here will make me no friends but... I feel it is something that -must- be suggested.
How about some actual forum rules be posted in stickies? One rule in particular would be very nice. A bump limit.
I peeked into a thread earlier that had two pages of bumps... every 2 to 5 minutes. So I opened another thread and found the same exact thing. So I opened 10 threads and found the same thing in all of them.
You want to know what can cause a -lot- of server lag? Using a forum as a chat instead of a forum.
Put a once a day limit on thread bumps. If there really are so many people selling dragons or other items that it bumps a 5 minute old post to page 2, then add some sub-forums to the buy/trade forums to divide up the flow of sales into something more manageable.
Like maybe a sub-forum for each dragon breed, or one for presales/reserves, etc. If there is enough use to warrant additional sub forums then they are worth adding.

^ Seconding the above comment here. If there are already such rules in place, they need to be made more visible and enforced. The sub-forums would actually be a good idea, because then people looking to buy a certain breed or trade would have an easier time searching instead of having to wade through the dozens of posts that aren't relevant to what they are looking for.

Aye, aye. Large forums with a lack of rules quickly turn to chaos. (Warriors Message Board anyone?)
I'm fine with a bump every few hours or so, but pages and pages of your own bumps is just too much. Subforums and rules would be wonderful.
Though the admins are all very busy at this time, I think it's something to hope for in the near future. In the mean time, people should really be more considerate about over-bumping and server lag.

Support. I have a thread for a somewhat related solution, the bump button, over
here if you would like to comment.

Agreed, I'm so tired of seeing "bump!" "BAMP!" "^^^^^" in a bunch of things. And just minutes apart.
I guess I wouldn't mind if it was actually a comment like "bumping to refresh! Still have X many babies for sale!" but I don't like seeing the single carrot up or a single word.

Full support.
Don't let this turn into Neopets-type forum. No-content bumps should be against the rules.

I don't agree that no-content bumps should be against the rules at all. These forums DO move very quickly in sales. I think people should be limited to only bumping if their thread is no longer on the first page - which is what a lot of people do. If their bumps are a few minutes apart, it's because that's how quickly their board left the first page. It's a huge pain in the butt, but don't just arbitrarily take that away from people just because you don't like seeing "pages and pages" of bumps on a thread. It's already hard enough to get people to notice threads as it is.
I am however in FULL support of having subforums. They are badly needed. We don't even need breed-specific forums; it'd be enough just to have subforums for reserves, raffles, auctions, etc. Lumping all of these types of dragon commerce into one forum isn't working. :|

I don't care how a person bumps a thread, be it no content or full of content. I am merely against how often it happens. This is a forum after all, not a chat. Adding more us forums would help distribute the traffic a lot though. I still think their should be a limit on bumps though.

I fail to see how keeping a sales thread visible to potential buyers turns the forum into a "chat." And why are you even concerned about what people do on their own threads? The only solution we need to this type of problem is subforums, not some measure to police people into advertising their wares a certain way just because "you don't like it."

I tried to make a sale thread in the dragon sale forum and the problem is, unless you bump every 2 seconds, nobody is going to see it. I tried to do bumps every 2-5 minutes and delete the bump posts after the post had been bumped, but for some reason they continued to count toward my post count so I'm wondering if that's also bogging the server down too. If deleting a post doesn't actually delete it...yeah. That's gonna cause some problems.
Edit: To fix typos.
