It’s dark here. Too dark some might say, though the dragons that do wouldn’t dare come close enough to even whisper it. But if the shadows speak to you my friend, like the hearkened voices of the creatures of the night, the ethereal glow of the mushroom forests, and the murky depths of the water so black one wonders if they’ve lost sight well…then you’re more than welcome into the arms of the shadow clan, Nox Invictus.



You awaken, lying on the cool grass, and open your eyes to near darkness, save but the faint glowing the fungal towers all around you. Some are big, some are small, and some you can barely see at all. They are mostly pale blues and greens, though you notice a few red glowing ones. The sight of the red mushroom snaps you back to the moment before you passed out. You had tripped over a bramble and tried to catch yourself by placing a claw upon the red mushroom.

A faint cough startles you and you try to move but find you can’t. Your eyes are open…you can move your jaw and your tail ever so slightly. But the rest of your limbs feel like terribly heavy stones keeping you locked in your place. The voice speaks this time, soft and raspy, gentle even.

“No need to panic dear, you’ll be quite alright. Numblood Shrooms are no joke. As the name suggests, it causes total body paralysis. It will also knock you out cold if you touch it bare clawed.” she says, and you can hear her claws thump along the ground as she walks over to face you.

She is a Pearlcatcher, deep red with black crackling and black tattered wings. Across parts of her body are several pustules, not unlike the ones seen across many of the plague dragons. In her tail wrapped neatly and securely as she walks, is her pearl. A hood covers most of her face, and the birdskull wingdrapes rattle softly before she sits before you. She curls her tail around her body, clutching the pearl with one claw and sliding her hood down with the other. It is now you see that she has pale icy eyes, though one appears to be nearly white and blind. She smiles warmly at you.

“I am Sanguine of Nox Invictus, a shadow flight here in the Tangled Wood. I mean you no harm. I merely wished to make sure you would indeed awaken. Some Numblood Shrooms are…deadlier than others.” she cautions you.

You blink at her, a flash of anxiety flitting through your chest. You find your voice, murmuring a thank you to her. She laughs, and gets comfortable, holding her pearl and watching you curiously. “Tell me traveler, what brought you into the Tangled Woods this fine day?” You look around, confused, as you are still surrounded by nothing but shadows. You look up realizing this is because the sky is completely blocked by thick, gnarled tree branches, all blending from one to another in a tree network. Sanguine laughs again. “There are some places around here that do get sunlight believe it or not. But again, why are you here traveler?” she presses. Its almost as if she knows something you don’t.

You close your eyes, trying to remember. Right! You had been traveling through the different dragon flights regions, trying to find a place you could call home. Searching for a place where you could spread your wings and be…..yourself. Sanguines eyes soften. “You are like many of us in Nox Invictus. Lost. But we have all found ourselves here, and made a home, and happiness for ourselves. It could be that for you, if you wish.”

Your eyes grow wide, and you shake your head, you don’t even know these dragons! And yet…is this not what you were searching for? A home? Then why are you afraid to try? Your head is fuzzy, confused, and you worry the Numblood Shroom is to blame. You look back at Sanguine, and ask her about Nox Invictus. She closes her eyes and lets out a wistful sigh. “Oh the tales i could tell you…and the Numblood will keep you paralyzed a few hours more. What better way to pass the time then to revisit our past.” Sanguine practically purrs.

Realizing now the gravity of the situation, you allow this seemingly kind dragon to tell you more about this particular clan. She takes her pearl into her claws and does a simple chant, letting the pearl float into the air and you watch as a scene begins to appear within the sphere. “It all started when…”
