______ Pain is the first thing Staryana remembered when she hatched. Not a physical pain, but the pain that came with grieving. She remembered first the pain a mother felt for losing her children, when she would later find out she was supposed to have two other siblings: two Spiral brothers who she would never grow up with, who she never got to see. She comforted her mother as best she could, but she was just a few minutes old at best. 'Comforting' was probably a vague interpretation of how she tried to help her mother.

______ Grief would be a common feeling during her first hours after hatching. Shortly after losing her brothers, she lost her mother as well. Passing away unexpectedly from losing too much energy bringing them into the world. Dragons of all shapes and sizes flooded her vision, making her confused and lost as Staryana couldn't understand why her mother wasn't waking up. A coatl gently tugged her away from the crowd, embracing her in a hug filled with feathers and warmth. Staryana found that she liked this feeling very much.

______ When her father returned, Staryana reached out to him with desperate talons, wanting to be comforted by the only family she had left. Undeterred by the frogs giving her odd looks, she stumbled towards him on wobbly talons after he'd entered the hatchery, a pleading look in her eyes. He had scooped her up in his talons and took her to his home which smelled of herbs and incense where he comforted her, promising that they would not be separated again. Whether he was putting his grieving aside to prioritize her, Staryana will never know, but he did not cast her away like some dragons thought he might do. He embraced her as his daughter, and she loved him as her father.

______ Starflight had always wanted his daughter to go into a profession she wanted to do, never making her feel like she had to follow him in his footsteps. Having to raise a daughter as a single parent whilst caring for injured dragons was no easy feat, but Portal stepped up to help care for her if his job got too rough. This did not deter Staryana from wanting to help her father - if anything, it made her more determined to be able to do so. She spent her time studying all the books, watching him while he worked, asking questions when he wasn't busy. Once she was old enough her father eventually caved, and she became his first apprentice.
