xxxClans who settle in the darkness of the Tangled Wood do so for any number of reasons: many for want of like-minded companionship, many to devote themselves to serving the Shadowbinder, and some for a far more practical reason: the indiscriminate sanctuary offered by the shadows. The Tangled Woods are where you go if you do not wish to be found. And Clan Alpha Carinae certainly does not wish to be found.
xxxIt would be near impossible to find the clan by anything other than a lucky accident. Travel far enough south to where the Tangled Wood breaks apart into a myriad of rocky islands on the border of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and perhaps you will spot their lair. You will not recognize it as one. Among the thousands of rocky crags and peaks that lay along that border, there is very little to indicate it is anything other than just another barren peak.
xxxIt is in itself quite isolated. The sea is vast, and from their island the mainland looks like little more than a blurred dark ribbon on the horizon. Perhaps, if the sun is out and you fly at the right angle, you will catch the glint of a small window in the corner of your eye, or you will see a shadow move across the dark, sea-sprayed stone, or a dark shape in the water. In all probability you will see nothing at all. They know you’re there long before you have a chance of seeing them.

xxxIt was never meant to be this way. We had a simple goal, though perhaps not a humble one: we were seekers of knowledge. We grew from modest beginnings in the depths of the great desert; from wanderers and hunters we became scientists and engineers. We learned to harness the raw energies of Sornieth, we built advanced machines, we draped dunes in verdant grassland, we made artificial beings in our image, and we learned not to fear. That was our mistake. We should have been afraid.
