Biography
Adustus m (feminine adusta, neuter adustum); first/second declension: kindled, singed, burnt "You're playing with fire." |
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Birthed under and subsequently killed by the searing flames caused by a lightning strike that danced dangerously close to his nest, fire and power have always been themes within this tumultuous dragon's afterlife. Adustus exists within the shadows of open fires, and some say his visage can be seen within smoke if you search carefully enough, resulting in oracles from all across Sornieth trying to contact him for news of impending natural disaster. In fact, this is his patronage, and he is said to shield particularly the young from instances of disaster. If folk tales are to be believed, it is believed that violent lightning storms are the result of Adustus' power struggle with the Stormcatcher himself, fighting for his right to a life that was stolen from him far too early. Other accounts go a step further and claim that he has recruited a rag-tag army of similarly early-doomed hatchlings in his never-ending war with his patron... It is a tradition within the homes of particularly superstitious Lightning dergs to keep a statue of this spirit near an unhatched nest, as to protect it from harm. |

Unlike most spirits, Adustus' intellect does not seem to be stilled by the fact that his life ended as a child. Whereas the spirits of children and adults tend to retain the intelligences and sensibilities one would expect out of a derg of that age, Adustus has always been depicted as agile, clever, and above all, angry - the latter of which, many a parent has described to their hatchling in a bed-time story, was what must have aged his heart and mind to the state one would find it in today. It is, of course, up to any derg worth the brain in their skull to discern what of Adustus' tale of woe is true, and what is not. But one would know better than to do too much thinking - after all, the spirits of Sornieth rarely like to be questioned on their authorities. |

The firepits of Mavenlark are always populated by a gaggle of small hatchlings, ogling at whatever story they can draw out of the nearby adults. This time, it is Mother Bitestrith who sits near the fire. You are too far to hear the exact words, but you hear the name “Adustus” uttered - you smile gently. He was always your favourite fairy tale as a child. Remember when you thought he was real, and would ask you to join his army of hatchlings?
