Summary
Death is as natural a part of a dragon's life as the weather. It brings grief and mourning, it poses its share of theoretical and philosophical questions (in a world of gods, what does it truly mean to die?) but at the end of the day, death can be defined as one thing and one thing alone - a business.

A business, Severus would like to remind you, where things occasionally go missing.

Of course, he keeps the bodies of your loved ones under tight watch. He balks at the suggestion of otherwise. Of course, you needn't worry about the recent string of grave robberies that have been plaguing your local area. Nasty beastclans, uncovering bodies for their perverted rituals, he spits. You could sooner get respect from a wet tarp than from a beast.

Still....sometimes, bones go missing. He can’t possibly account for that. Scales are clipped away and pocketed by those “nasty beastclans” you thought he was so intent on keeping at bay. He shrugs if you mention this, feigned pity in his eyes. Sympathy is not his forte.

Dirt sits under his claws, as much a part of him as the runes that run down his spine. You try to read them - they say that the runes that run across the dergs lucky enough to have them are the essence of their soul - but your brain threatens to eject from your skull, so great is the pain inflicted within the center of your head when your eyes run across them. Eye contact is no better. They don’t seem to sit still in his sockets, rolling around as if trying to meet with some invisible force.

Do you really want to trust this guy? If you find your wallet in dire straits around the time of a loved one’s death, you might have no other choice.

Early Years
Severus once worked under Vachel, for whom he still has a decent amount of respect for - a momentous accomplishment for this selfish derg. Taxidermy work soon proved to be of disinterest to him, however, and he found himself gravitating towards the true core of what fascinated him: death. It did not take long for him to find odd jobs that required burial work and body preparation, both of which he had picked up some vaguely connected skills for from taxidermy - though how connected they truly are is debatable. Still, the combination of dergs in grief with shallow pockets meant that he was able to do a fair amount of practicing with many heads turned the other way.

Technically, one would count him as a skilled mortician, if not for the habit of bits of his bodies disappearing. He swears that this is the consequence of working in impoverished areas, the denizens of which he targets serves in his funeral parlor. Still, with such frequency?

JOB
As outlined before, Severus is in a position of authority over the dead bodies provided by poorer dergs, who are often in need of a cheap, swift funeral. He is well acquainted with the burial rights of all dragon species within reason - obviously, he has never been allowed to prepare an Imperial body, and the secrecy of the process intrigues him - though his tact leaves something to be desired. They say that the real work of a funeral parlor is working with the living, not the dead. Perhaps Severus has never heard that phrase before, or is willfully ignorant of it.

Current
Severus carefully ran his fingers over the bookshelf, testing their reactivity. Nothing out of the ordinary happened, save for some dust sticking to his claws. He winced, bracing for a sneeze. When none came, he found himself happy with the results - a regular bookshelf, to be sure. He smiled. His claws reached for the books once again, this time pulling them out in a haphazard fashion. Embalming: History, Theory, and Practice tumbled ungraciously to the floor in a pile where it was soon joined by They’re in a Better Place and Mouth Suturing for Beginners. The bookshelf groaned under the lack of weight, and he waited patiently. Still, nothing. Severus was positively gleeful now. He carefully placed the books back into place, an electric black energy now humming within the air.

As quickly as they had been returned, he again began to pull books, but this time, more orderly. First came Forced Exaltation: Rights of the Damned, followed closely by The Microbiology of Mortuary Arts. He paused, hummed a little song in his head that his mother used to lull him to sleep with, and then reached for Meaningful Floral Arrangements and You. The bookshelf, once quiet, gave a loud yell of escaping magic. He winced. He would need to find a way to quiet that later. Still, the results were pleasurable - ejecting their entire contents, the bookshelf shook and morphed into a doorway, leaving scattered papers and torn covers astrew in the chaos. He didn’t care much. They were merely display, anyway.

The door handle was cold to the touch, but after a brief stint in the Floes, he was used to such things anyway. His hands grasped the knob. Laying on the other side were rows of empty shelves, dank despite their lack of contents, accompanied by a bone-chilling breeze that was obviously the source of the handle’s temperature. Severus whipped his tail back in forth in pleasure, barely able to contain the energy emitting forth from his soul.

Finally! His own private catacombs! His mind turned to the body of the Pearlcatcher that he had buried in a shallow grave just that morning. Perhaps they would be an appropriate start to his collection...

A Day in The Life
What happens during the light hours is fairly obvious - he can be seen wandering around his funeral parlor, tending to his workers and clients alike. What happens at night, however, is nobody’s business.

Outlook

Severus doesn’t have much respect for the dead, but in all fairness, he doesn’t have much respect for the living, either. He is wholly wrapped up in himself - what will make him happy and richer the quickest to fund his private plans is of his utmost concern.

NOTES
Quote:
A small, odd looking spiral makes his way through the crowd of Mavenlark, obviously looking for something of interest. He finds you instead, and his face twists into a tight smile. You are not what he's looking for.

"You there," he asks. "You look smart enough. Did you happen to see a family of grieving Pearlcatchers around here? About yay tall, eyes wet with tears? No? Damn it, I've lost another one..."
