Sabetha has always worn a mask. When she stepped into the library, choosing a new name came easily to her for precisely that reason. She’d always lived lavish lies.

She was born to wealth, successful parents. That made her way of doing things easier, but it didn’t help with the fear of rejection and the late night bouts of paranoia. She had everything she could ever need or want, and yet it felt hollow. She feared that she didn’t deserve the love of her friends and associates. What if they only loved her because of her wealth and status?

She did her best to leave it all behind her when she stepped into parties or festivals, and she did an excellent job. Others looked at her with envy. Such confidence. Such perfection. Surely nothing troubled her, the masked maiden of the ball.

She loved attending masquerade balls and costume parties. The smiles were the easiest lie to tell, since few of her companions were keen to look past it. They loved her image of perfection.

Eventually, it became too much. There was no crime or dramatic falling out, only a late night breakdown. An insecure, gentle creature bowed below the pressure of perfection. She could no longer wear the mask, and so in the middle of the night, she slipped away. She left the world of wealth and glamor behind, in search of something new.
