Haema Subclan

Odalric is an ancient dragon, though he appears incredibly young, soft and delicate. He stumbled onto this lair nearly by accident, having chased another dragon here. He'd overheard an incorporeal Pinstrike talking with others from the Mercurial Flush about a strange group of dragons that only emerged at night and acted otherwise suspiciously. Through trial and error, traveling only at night, he left what had been a culturally rich, nurturing clan and found his way here to be among what he considered his own kind. It has been a long, long time since he'd returned. He'd forgotten what it was like, what had driven him away to hide in the gloaming of the other flights, to keep anyone from knowing who he truly was.

Though the Haema did not know their origins, nor did most seem to care, it was a burden that Odalric has carried for centuries. Too long ago, their condition started as just another plague released by the goddess herself. It was a contagion that created a nearly unquenchable thirst, making the infected insatiable, rabid and weak to sunlight. It was too violent, too destructive and though the contagion could spread quickly, careful dragons were able to slaughter the nearly mindless contaminated. It was a massacre on both sides.

The infected who had not gone completely wild scattered when they realized the real danger they were in, crossing out of the Scarred Wasteland, bringing the contagion with them. They were hunted and most were slain, but not all. Those that hid themselves well and could contain their desires, survived. They kept from infecting hordes, picking and choosing their victims and their companions, staying in the shadows. They were the embers that had survived the flash fire of the contagion, and if they were wise and patient, they discovered the contagion had given them much more than a thirst and a weakness to the sun. There was power other dragons didn't have. There was invulnerability to other disease. There was an amaranthine agelessness.

Odalric was not one of those ancestors, no. Though he had been infected, he did not carry the contagion. He could bite all the dragons he wanted and they would merely be cross with him. He had been bitten many decades after the introduction of the contagion, when it had been refined by the carriers. The infection became picky. Though it always contaminated, it was not always virulent. Sometimes the body of the dragon rejected it and died. Sometimes it only manifested as symptoms rather than infection. Only in certain dragons did the infection thrive fully. Aberrant is one of those dragons. Though he is not a careful dragon, he has found a home in a violent place. He blends in and thrives. But Aberrant is young. It is not likely he will survive.

After living for such an achingly long time, Odalric has grown deeply tired. He is still powerful, one of the strongest the entire lair has ever seen, but often appears lost in thought, a wisp of life that might be blown away on a soft breeze. He is not vicious, often sickened by the violence that is common here. He has fed only on animals for a very long time. Yet he stays here. His hope is to keep the Haema in check, to keep them from kindling a new fire. He doesn't know how much longer he will last. Lately, his mind keeps drifting to thoughts of seeing another sunrise, something that would shatter his ancient body permanently. Aside from the dangers of leaving the Haema without a minder, one of the main reasons he hasn't met the sun again is the fledgling that has attached himself to Odalric. After has become a steady rock in Odalric's life, always close at hand, ready to support him if he stumbles or listen when he rambles. The Guardian is dedicated and loyal, almost to a fault, yet Odalric can't find it in himself to mind.

He wears a locket at all times, bearing a single cameo of a female Pearlcatcher with the words "Blood on the Stone" etched into the metal. It is an antique, nearly as old as Odalric himself, and his most prized possession. He does not speak of it often, but sometimes when asked he is nostalgic enough to imply it is the likeness of his creator, with a tender smile.
