The water is cold; glacial melt-water deep beneath the ground, clear and crisp and quiet.

You glide through it silently, eyes glowing in the pitch black of the underground river. Fish the color of bone, eyes white and milky and useless in the darkness, swim beneath you. As you draw nearer the fish press themselves closer to the stone, or dart into small crevasses to hide from the foreign behemoth patrolling the waters above them.

You can’t hear much beyond the flow of water around you and the odd echo that travels through the hollow earth. But you can imagine the sounds above, in the main cavern where the entrance to this mysterious cave system lies, secure behind wards and shadow and stone.

The current changes as you move down through a deeper tunnel, the walls closing in so tight that your wings threaten to scrape along the sides, no matter how tightly you tuck them against their body.

The tunnel finally widens out and you surge upward with a powerful push of your tail. Above you see the faint flickering of what seems like stars reflected across the water’s surface, twinkling in and out as the water churns. You break free, steam rising from your nostrils as you take in several deep breaths and let your eyes adjust to the soft lighting of the underground lake.

A multitude of softly glowing crystals hang down from the ceiling, crafting the illusion of a night sky above you as you swim near the surface, taking the chance to stretch your wings.
