(from The Writer's Rescue)

Quote:
Soot and Valyria were hard at work with their blacksmithing and goldsmithing, completely involved in what they were doing, when suddenly the Fire Skydancer groaned loudly.
"What happened?" Soot, a Fire Snapper, asked her best friend.
"The furnace has cooled again; I swear there is something wrong with it! Now I have to do this piece over again," she continued to groan as she threw the necklace she'd been working on back into the fire.
"I don't know why this keeps happening," Soot furrowed her eyebrows, realizing her friend was right and that she too would have to press pause on her project.
"I can make precise art with hot metal, but I can't figure out these gas valves!" Valyria complained as she tried to mess with the furnace controls. "Karat is going to come back from his break to this mess!" She sat down in frustration and her best friend walked over to soothe her.
"It's okay. He can't fix it anymore than we can. I think it's about time we talk to Vixen about this and see if she can set anyone on the job. I'm sure someone in the clan will know what to do." Just as the two began to breathe and calm down, the furnace started back up again and hot air blew at them.
"It's back...but how?" Valyria looked quizzically at it as her mate, a Light Fae, walked in.
"What's wrong?" Karat asked, noticing that the two who are always buried in their work were taking a conjoined break.
"Did you do that?"
"Do what?"
"The furnace turned off again but it just came back on. Was that you?" The little Fae flew over to the furnace and narrowed his eyes at it.
"No, I just got back, I haven't touched it. Something smells different...do you smell that?" Karat spent nearly all his time near the furnace, as the resident jeweler. He knew every smell, every piece of ash, every sound. But now even the massive furnace's hydraulics sounded different. They didn't creak and scream like they used to. They sounded brand new almost. Just then, a Wind Pearlcatcher walked into view.
"There, that should fix it," She said under her breath, then looked to the three of them. "Your furnace had a jam in the pipes that I could hear from the marketplace, but I've repaired it for you. I've seen your guys' work for sale in the market and it's so beautiful. It'd be a shame if your work got backed up because of a simple fix. I hope I haven't intruded too much, I just can't help myself with these things." Karat looked stunned and uncomfortable as he only liked the company of the two next to him, but Soot was smiling and Valyria ran to the Pearlcatcher excitedly.
"Girl, you're a lifesaver! Thank you so much!" The Skydancer embraced her and she chuckled. "My name's Valyria, to my left is Soot, and to my right is Karat. We are of Vixen's Clan."
"It's very nice to meet all of you. I'm Thieny."
"Thieny, where do you reign from?" Soot asked as she stepped forward to bump heads with the friendly Pearlcatcher.
"I'm kinda in between clans right now. I spend most of my time bustling through the marketplace anyway, so I don't think I'd be much of an asset to any clan."
"Oh, what's your trade? Do you have a booth in the marketplace?"
"No, no. I'm not crafty like you guys, I wish. No, I just help around. I'm good at fixing things. I know how things work and can always tell when something's off--even if it's a mile away. I don't know why, I've just got a natural caliber for it."
"Girl, that is a super skill! We were just talking about how we needed someone for maintenance. You could join our clan! I mean--if you want to. It's totally an open offer. There's space for you in here if you want to camp with us; that is, if you don't mind the scorching heat." She suddenly turned to her mate and looked at him cautiously, "That'd be okay, right? You wouldn't mind?"
"I can make an exception. Practical skills like hers are a necessity especially for such an odd clan as ours. I'm sure there are plenty more things that need fixing. I mean, here we are perched in the Demonic Woods where everything gets broken..." he mumbled the last bit as a groan. Valyria smiled.
"Well then it's just up to you, Thieny. What you think--want to join us?"
The Wind Pearlcatcher smiled broadly and nodded. "If you're sure, I'd be delighted to live with all of you. I promise I won't slack off, and I'll pull my weight!"
"Then it's official. Welcome to Vixen's Clan!"

And with that Thieny joined the little trio who worked tirelessly in the Demonic Woods region of Vixen's Clan. She joined the clan as the Maintenance/Fixer-Upper dragon which in totality was truly needed throughout the clan. Vixen, the Matriarch, was delighted at her arrival despite the fact that they always struggled over lair space. She assured her that a dragon with her skills and personality was definitely welcome and that they would make space.
Thieny travels all over the clan, and still goes to the marketplace to help other dragons and clans, but at the end of the day she's back in the furnace area, sleeping among her three favorite clan-members: Valyria, Soot, and Karat.
