Biography

MAVA
Uh-oh, looks like this trusting flower wandered a little too far from her lair, and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here.

When Mava first opened her eyes, it was to a seemingly endless array of Mirrors. She trembled and squeaked, hiding behind the matching golden female that was her mother. She peered around the haunches of the older female to see...

Family. And lots of it.

Born to a nest of four, she was the eldest and only girl. This immediately threw her into her father, Isaye's, good graces. She was cute and little and reminded him oh-so-fondly of her mother (and his clearly favored mate, Wythra).

Her joy at the seemingly happy home was not to last. Lorel was the exceedingly jealous type. While no one in the clan had ever hidden the fact that Mava's brothers would soon move on, none of them had seemed to consider what Lorel might do to the young female born from her strongest rival...

Shortly after the hatching, Lorel lead the poor trusting young Mava away from the rest of the Clan and left her out in the harsh, cold world on her own with a nasty comment that no one wanted her, and no one ever would.

Those are the words Mava has taken to heart.

tumblr_nj9kyb0AiI1r28672o9_1280.png

After a time wandering aimlessly through the wilderness, a team of three battle-worn dragons stumbled across her when returning from a combat expedition. Thus the miserable little hatchling was brought to the towering lair of the Stormhold Clan on the back of a battle-weary Ridgeback.

Her appetite was insatiable and her attitude unquenchable, though she was never unappreciative of the trio of veteran dragons who spared her life. Over the next several cycles, she began to grow and mature into an active young dragon. The moment she came of age, she approached one of the three large dragons to allow her to come along to help the team fight. But she was laughed off and left to her own devices. This angered her, and she stormed out into the Shifting Expanse in pursuit of her own battles. She would fight, and she would prepare herself for anything that got in her way.

tumblr_nj9kyb0AiI1r28672o9_1280.png

Her journey took her near the Clex Clan - where a small pack of female Mirrors were squabbling about something. Mava was about ready to push her way in to see what the commotion was all about when a large black-and-red male Mirror brought all the ladies to attention.

Mava didn't like how something about him felt familiar...

The male glanced at her, and then his head shot up. "Wythra?"

Mava stiffened. There were few things she remembered from her early days of being a hatchling, but her mother's name was something she'd never forget. She snapped, "No, I'm sorry!"

The male knew he'd hit a nerve, by how confrontational she was, chest puffed and head high. "No you aren't," he answered, but he couldn't let it go. "But you look almost identical..."

Mava glared at him, tail lashing.

"She was nice to me in the short time I spent with her," the male mused, then smirked. "She was nicer to me than my own mother, which made her angry. But that was extremely short-lived... My father chased me from the nest faster then you could say boo. Why do you look like Wythra? Are you one of hers?"

Mava still didn't answer.

"Ah forget it, it doesn't matter," he said, conceding defeat - he wasn't going to get answers from her, not when she was so mad. "I'm Kingpin. You look a bit tired so... let me take you back to my lair so you can rest." He barked a sharp command to the unruly Mirrors he was with and they all took flight.

Back at his lair, Kingpin ordered the females with game to prepare their evening meal. But Mava would not be sidetracked: she hissed at him in irritation, demanding answers from him. How did he know her mother? What did he know of her family?

One of his females got snappy at her for being so demanding of their Alpha, but Kingpin hushed her, trying to give Mava some answers. He knew very little; she learned only that they shared the same father.

Mava couldn't forget that he was son to the female that had abandoned her in the wilds, telling her no one wanted her. It left her feeling slightly bitter to him. Kingpin could sense it. He knew his mother wasn't the kindest, especially to those she felt were... prettier then she. He could only assure his half-sister that she wasn't the only one unappreciated by Lorel.

Mava stormed out of the lair, more irritated than when she stumbled upon the clan. Sitting with a huff, she wasn't sure what she was more irritated by: the fact that she was told her mother was "nice" or the fact that Kingpin was the son of the female who told her no one would ever want her. Lost in her fuming thoughts, Mava was suddenly startled by a little chirp from behind her. Her head swiveled towards the noise and she saw a young hatchling, no older than she had been when she was abandoned.

"What do you want?" she grumped at the hatchling.

The little white female only nuzzled into her and chirped.

"Go away," she snapped. But the hatchling simply smiled up at her, her eyes glittering with innocence. Mava sighed, feeling guilty, and gave her a small pat. The little female chirped happily and held up a small necklace she had obviously made herself. Mava blinked, then slowly took it from the little one.

"Teigra says it will help fighters find what they're lookin for," the little one got out in her garbled hatchling speech, before bouncing away as Kingpin slowly approached. Mava hesitantly put the necklace on as her half-brother took a seat by her.

He told her that no matter where she traveled she was always welcome in his lair, even though they didn't really know each other. She was, and always would be, his sister, and that entitled her to consider his lair home.

But he could tell that she had unfinished business. She had come looking for a fight and he didn't want it to be that kind of battle; he wasn't his mother.

Mava gave him a small nod, accepting his answers and his offer. But she wanted to prove to those veteran dragons who had looked after her as a hatchling that she was a true fighter, that she could be a warrior.

Kingpin asked her to stay for a meal and a short rest, and mindful of staying on good terms with him, Mava agreed. Besides, she was hungry.

She joined the other Mirrors in a meal and a night's rest before she took flight. Letting the events sink in, clutching her birdskull necklace tightly, Mava let the winds guide her...

tumblr_nj9kyb0AiI1r28672o9_1280.png

Her travels took her through the Ashfall Wastes, where she came across a dragon about to embark on his own journey. Gravelblood was his name. What an odd dragon he was.

It seemed they shared much in common, and for a while, they shared a cave on the edge of the Scorched Forest. They swapped stories, taught each other things, and Gravelblood even started training her to be a warrior.

Eventually, they chose to brood together. Their nest resulted in a single son, Cord.

When Gravelblood felt the urge to travel again, they went their different ways - but perhaps someday they'd meet again. Cord remained with his mother.

tumblr_nj9kyb0AiI1r28672o9_1280.png

Not long after Gravelblood left, Cord felt compelled to serve the Icewarden. Try as she might, Mava could not convince him to stay with her.

Torn with grief, she left their home. She flew without direction, letting the winds choose her path. Eventually, she flew over the oceans... where she realized she'd gone to far. Desperately she searched for a place to rest, and as luck would have it, there was a large boat in the distance. Only by the sheerest of determination did she reach it; exhausted, she failed her landing, hitting the mast and tearing her wing as she crashed to the deck.

The ship belonged to a Tundra male named Calypso - who fancied himself to be a bit of a pirate. Calypso, though, had the kindest of hearts: he mended Mava's wing and gave her a place to stay on his ship while she healed.

The ocean soothed Mava. When it was peaceful and calm, the sun glittered on it like the brightest of gems. And the storms reminded her much of herself and her life: they lifted the ship high up on the waves before plunging it deep down into the troughs of despair, when she feared they might drown, only to be thrown high once again.

During this time, Calypso and Mava were blessed with two hatchlings. Her heart swelled as she got to see her daughters, Pandora and Carrow, grow to adulthood and begin their own adventures.

And thus Mava realized it was time that she herself continued on her journey. With great sadness, she bid her pirate and daughters goodbye and once again set off on her travels...

tumblr_nj9kyb0AiI1r28672o9_1280.png

In the Shifting Expanse, she met a dragon whose face was sad. His name was Kristopher.

She thought he was a bit like her: he was filled with hurt and was always nervous.

Is it love? or just sympathy? She couldn't know. Mava only knew she wanted to help him. They became lovers and had one son. Mummert was bright and shining and a peaceful boy.

But one day, heavy storms broke and many dragons were lost in the lightning. She couldn't find her lover or her son. Oh, everything was gone.

She had no reasons to stay, now. It was time to go.

tumblr_nj9kyb0AiI1r28672o9_1280.png

She wandered, grieving.

Finally, her strength spent, she was forced to touch down in the Starfall Isles.

She was found by a volatile creature who called herself Wulfnod, and brought back to her clan's lair. Contrary to what she expected, given Wulfnod's strange behavior, Mava was made welcome: she was given a space to sleep in, one to call her own if she so chose, and allowed free reign over her own activities - which, at first, consisted of more solitary grieving.

Her life was a wreck. How many times had she loved and lost now? Why hadn't she chosen to stay with Calypso? What kind of idiot was she?

Though she often crossed paths with Wulfnod in her wandering grief, it was Lethal who wormed her whole bitter history out of her. The assassin-turned-birdwatcher understood her.

Slowly she began to see the good in life again. In fact, Lethal rekindled her desire to be a warrior; though he himself was not interested in fighting, he convinced The Twins to continue her training.

With all that he had done for her, Mava wanted to give him something in return. She'd come to love this strangely gentle Spiral with the ill-fitting name.

She nested, and her clutch resulted in four healthy sons.

,,,And it seemed they had inherited her wandering spirit. Her three eldest continuously pestered her for adventure stories; in fact, her second almost immediately went to a friendly Wind clan. Only her youngest seemed content to stay at home.

Reluctantly, she decided to travel again, taking her second son alongside her.

tumblr_nj9kyb0AiI1r28672o9_1280.png

Now accompanied by her son, Mava found her way into the peaceful wind clan of Genovia. Their clan saw hundreds of travels like her come and go but Genovia was thrilled to finally see another mirror. Her clan was a peaceful one, they spent their days drifting along happily in the wind and playing with their fimiliars. Out of all the dragons there, the leader Genovia was the only mirror, save for her twin sons who made the ultimate sacrifice for the Windsinger. Mava shared the tales of her travels and the members of the happy clan listened undividedly. After a week's stay she decided to move on again, reciving a goodbye from each and every one of the dragons of the clans, even the hatchlings! With her son at her side, she searched again for a place to go.

They don't like me. There is a feeling deep in the pit of her stomach that tells her so. They don't like me.

She tries to force herself to ignore it. After all, they are treating her and her son with a soft kindness, inviting them to strolls through the woods and games around a big wooden table.

When time doesn't banish the discomfort, she begins to bring it up, cautiously and apologetically. Dawn feigns a playful offense, Lark gives her a clueless shrug and changes the topic, and Auriel mumbles something that sounds like it is supposed to be deep and meaningful, but just ends up confusing her. None of the answers are particularly satisfying, and they don't convince the feeling to lift, so she sighs and packs up their things. "Time to move on," she tells everyone. "It's been lovely here." They seem to understand.

In her last night, she finds herself bringing the matter up with Heart over a cup of bitter sweetgrass tea; partially because she has the air of being the all-knowing leader, but mostly because the dark feeling always seems to intensify in her presence. This one despises you the most. The skydancer puts down her cup and looks at her very hard. "I'm not sure why you feel that way," she says, but Mava is not convinced. "I'm leaving tomorrow," she tells Heart, "you can tell me." There is a very tense pause. "You are below our standard," Heart says finally. "You're very fortunate to be travelling."

Mava looks at her. As she begins to understand, the bubbling discomfort that has been haunting her since she stepped foot into this lair is replacing by a rumbling anger. "Are you saying that me and my son should exalt ourselves simply because we're not as pretty as the rest of you?" she asks darkly.

"Your decisions are none of my business," Heart says, standing up. "I've simply observed many like you make that choice."

Mava retains her composure, but only barely. She finds her son, sleeping by Auriel, and shakes him awake. "We're going," she tells him quietly. "Don't wake the others."

"You said we were spending the morning with them," he replies.

"Change of plans, we're going," she whispers fiercely, shoving a travel pack into his arms.

He looks between her and the other spiral, coiled up only a few meters away. "Let me leave a note," he says, the hint of a whimper in his voice.

The trip through the winding woods is thick with brambles and thorns, and in the dark of the night, with only the bioluminescent plant life to guide them, Mava and Fulton soon find themselves well and truly lost in the wilds of the Tangled Wood. They struggle for hours, pushing through prickers and ignoring distant screeches, disembodied laughter, and every vine that stood in their way. Mava's anger fills her empty stomach and rots her kind words. Fulton doesn't understand, but how could she bring herself to tell him?

Turning circles in more ways than one, she snarls, her leg trapped in the clutches of a thorned vine. Fulton ran into her from behind, making her snap her jaws in irritation. At a loss, the two settle in to wait for sunlight to break the boughs above them. Morning wasn't far off.

From the thicket the light came, spilling across the two of them in shimmering blues and purples. It came not from sunrise, but from a brilliant, glowing Fae, riding tall and regal atop a dark, armored Imperial's shoulder."There we are," mused the Fae in her usual warm monotone. "If you'd needed a place to stay, you could have simply come to the front door. Cirsium--"

The Imperial freed Mava and without word picked up their belongings, carrying it to the door of Clan Mellori, some odd 10 feet away as luck would have it. The lair was spacious and the dragons inside welcoming. It was a far cry from the lair they'd just left. The Apothecary saw to their injuries, and despite her lacking bedside manner, they found the lair quite warm. Mava's distrust fluttered in her stomach, uneasy still, with Heartspell's name still scorched deep into her angry heart. Time passed quickly, without either she or Fulton's notice. Something about the clan, the community, the warmth that filled the cavernous lair and fought back the gloom that filled the wretched woods, urged her to settle for a time. Settle forever.

For e v er.

In the middle of the night, some months later, she woke in a cold sweat. Dreams plagued with lights and whispering voices and a cloying sweetness, deep and unrelenting, like rotting flowers. She was going to be sick.

This time, she waited until morning before she gathered her things and her son, and once again, went out on her way. Orla hovered at the door, watching with a heavy, aching heart as the two stepped out into the cold morning air. Autumn was upon them. Catching a stray maple leaf from the air, Orla stared at it for a long moment before holding it out to Mava. "They say that whispering a wish to these leaves falls upon the ear of Our Beloved Shadowbinder. She hears, and she grants you her favor." Orla whispers, her eyes meeting Mava's.

Something, deep inside them, seemed to flicker.

FoR EvE R.

As Mava left, maple leaf crushed in her talons, she didn't look back. She didn't dare.
