LORE
You find yourself on a simple dirt trail deep within a Light forest. The chatter of birdsong creates a delicate melody among the trees, and dandelions toss their bright, cheery heads in a warm breeze that smells faintly of the sea. Perhaps you came here seeking knowledge or adventure. Whatever drew you to this land, it seems you have a decision to make. As you travel further down the trail, sweetly scented pine needles softening your steps, the path splits in two. On your left, you can make out the foreboding Hewn City in the distance among the dark and tangled trees. Tiny embers shine out from the shadows of the city. Possibly camps or bonfires? On your right, the path is marked with cheerful lanterns, and appears to lead to the Beacon. Shining marble pillars and crumbling ruins line the tidy trail. Which do you chose?

HEARTSGLEAM HEALERS
Years ago, the land of Light darkened. The rich forests of the Sunbeam Ruins began to turn from pale birch gold to a deep teal as the Shadowbinder gained ground on Light territory. Sensing the Lightweaver's brief weakness, a different being began to plot. It was the Shade, lying in wait within the fathomless abyss of space.

It slowly began to corrupt Light territory, unnoticed for a time. Finally the powerful diety felt her connection with Sornieth weakening and knew the cold certainty of fear. But the calm and analytical goddess of Light decided on a plan.

She chose to create a dragon to combat the Shade. No, not a regal Imperial or ferocious Guardian, but a simple Fae girl. This girl would be born in a cocoon of Light magic and artifacts, graced with the colors of the fading sunset, the last hope of her Goddess. She also made the Fae a companion: a pure, innocent Fae boy who looked like a part of the war torn woods. They found one another wandering with all the naivete and inexperience of hatchlings, freshly born into the world with no memories or guidance from their Mother, for direct interference is forbidden by ancient laws.

The pair took shelter from a gentle rainstorm in some nearby ruins soon after their unusual birth. When the grey sky cleared and light softly broke through the clouds, a golden Skydancer lady discovered the helpless Fae. Fortunately for them, she was a paladin bound to help the Light. They made a pact to become the "Heartsgleam Healers," a modest clan of medics and clerics dedicated to restoring the land. Though the Healers are nomadic, they currently live in makeshift camps scattered about the Emperor's Wake.

PRAESTA
Praesta is a sprawling city state under the rule of Emperor Dimas and Empress Azaneh. Located near the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, it is a truly breathtaking sight. The city is an opulant center of trade and knowledge, richly decorated with fountains and lanterns, glowing with a benevolent light. Some of the most notable buildings are the Royal Palace and the verdant villas and parks surrounding it. It is largely self sufficient, with plenty of food purchased and produced daily. The quality of life is good for both nobles and humble folk alike, with an advanced irrigation system and grain distributed to the poor. However, the city isn't as idyllic as it appears at the surface...Harmless mock battles in the coliseum have become brutal, the Monarchs show signs of corruption, and taxes are higher than they have been in decades. Praesta's citizens are slowly growing restless, unfooled by the pristine athmosophere. The Healers suspect that a dark force is at work.

FACTIONS

THE ASSEMBLY
Praesta mixes democratic assemblies with a monarchy. The Assembly gathers at least once a month near the Beacon to discuss important matters such as war, food supply, or polical officials. Any adult dragon can vote in the assembly, usually with a show of paws. Attendance is paid for in certain periods, which encourages citizens who must travel far and can't afford time off to attend. However, the Assembly tends to be dominated by the wealthy or the best speakers, especially behind the scenes in private conspiratorial political meetings (xynomosiai) and groups (hetaireiai). The Emperor and Empress share power with this Assembly for the most part, and are keep in check by elected magistrates called ephoroi.
