INFO
Son of the famed Consoleglitch and Crisis Triscar, Vanguard was inspired from a young age to protect all who cross his path. However, he quickly learned that being a physical protector wasn't his thing after getting into multiple scuffles with bullies when speaking up for his little sister.

Following his failure to go into bodyguarding, Vanguard decided to go another route. He went into mediating and speaking to the dead, finding friends and fascination with the dragons he never got to meet in real life.

Having trained himself, he can now speak and walk with spirits of dead dragons and familiars. Often he will not be found with living dragons and find them less interesting than the dead, itching to go back to the nearest graveyard.

STORY
The sun said its goodbyes with its last few rich, golden rays before it dipped beyond the hazy mountains in the distance. The bright moon rose, round and proud of itself, greeting the sleepy dragons who were ready to retire for the night. To most, the moon was a guard, watching over them as they slept.

Not for Vanguard. The moon was one of his friends, and unlike dragons the moon was always interesting. Every night shadows illuminated new craters, new spots of grey. The hatchling snuck out of his mother's den, crawling out of her nest as she snoozed under the protection of tangled brambles. His two sisters were curled into silver balls next to the Consoleglitch. None of them made a sound as he crawled out and disappeared into the night.

He had learned some new techniques, ones that he was certain would help him establish a good connection with the dragons in the graveyard. Before he headed for the graveyard, he pulled out a little bundle of crystals he had been collecting to help open pathways to the spiritual realm. Inside was a massive amount of quartz and obsidian, but only a few small pieces of selenite and celestite. Selenite and celestite was the most important, but he was certain the small pieces would still help some. Bundling up the crystals, he made off to the graveyard before anyone could catch him awake.

As he got to the edge of the clearing filled with tombstones and fresh flowers, he was sure to make his presence known. "Hello spirits, it's me again! I hope I haven't disturbed anyone." He didn't expect an answer, having not yet opened his communication path with them, but felt it was a necessary formality anyway. "I think I've got it this time, so please cooperate with me, okay guys?"

He settled down in front of a tombstone. He could never communicate with more than one dragon at a time - that was something to be practiced when he was older and more ready. Carefully, he arranged the crystals he had collected in front of the tombstone. "I'm sorry I don't have a lot of celestite. It's quite hard to find around here and Mom doesn't let me go to the Starfall Isles. I hope you don't mind, Miss..." He squinted at the name on the tombstone, hardly illuminated by pale moonlight, "Aequitas."

Once he was done arranging the stones, he sat down and remained silent. He focused first on himself - where he was, what time it was, what the moon was like. Slowly, he let go of those images and his feelings of the physical world around him. The prickly, coarse dirt ground seemed to vanish around him, the sound of trees rustling against each other muting. Then, a calm energy followed.

There was a feeling of absolute nothingness, before another soft wave of welcoming energy. He was doing it! He focused more, asking the spirit to come forward and reveal itself. He had only ever managed to talk to them in his mind, but not see them. This spirit was shy. He willed her to come forward, insisting that he didn't mean any harm and just wanted someone to talk to.

The spirit still hesitated, but Vanguard refused to give up. They spent an hour going back and forth, the spirit insisting that she wasn't something worth seeing, and Vanguard in return insisting that she indeed was something beautiful that he wanted the privilege of seeing.

The moon was at its peak when finally she relented. With the additional power of the moon shining right on him, he successfully pulled her out of hiding.

He opened his eyes. Before him, clinging to the tombstone, was an incorporal projection of this Miss Aequitas. A beautiful golden fae she was, dressed in fine silks and elegant gold jewelry. Her wings had faded white splotches on gold, but he was in total awe. The edges of her body seemed to break apart into fine specks of glowing glitter. She watched him with bright yellow eyes. "Hello, child."

Her voice was smooth as honey, and it felt like a warm wave gently going over him. "H-H-Hello! Wow! You're absolutely stunning Miss! I can't believe I did it! I hope I didn't disturb you too much, Miss."

Aequitas offered a sweet smile. "Don't worry, my dear. The afterlife gets lonely after awhile. So, since you went through all the trouble of coming to talk to me, you must have some questions. I'll be glad to answer any you might have."

Vanguard excitedly rambled off throughout the night, asking as many questions as he could. He asked for the story of her death, then about Scyria, then the battle against the Shade, then how he could get better at his mediating, then her favourite colour, and what happened to her wings. Aequitas answered all his questions with immense patience.

The sky turned just the slightest bit lighter. "You should be off to bed, my dear. Your mother will be waking soon."

Vanguard pouted. "Aww.... but I wanna stay and chat! There's so many things I still wanna ask!"

Aequitas chuckled. "You can always visit me again tonight. Besides, you look tired sweetie." She nudged him off towards the graveyard's exit. "Go back to bed darling. I'll speak to you again soon."

Vanguard reluctantly began his process of returning to his body. "Okay... but promise you'll be here tonight!"

The golden fae nudged one crystal out of place and began to fade. "The afterlife isn't going anywhere my dear. I'll definitely still be here."

Vanguard watched as her body faded into nothing but wisps of air. There was a little pang of sadness as his new friend disappeared. When he was sure she was gone, he collected his stones and headed back to the clan.
