The Sanctuary

The Icewarden's domain bears incredible beauty for those who were born there, but for foreigners travels through the southern icefield are very dangerous. Born deep in the fortress of ends, Amethyst had made it her mission to escort travelers through the icefield safely. She herself had no home, clan or destinations, just trying to help wherever she was needed.

It was one night when a snowstorm hit, that Amethyst searched for shelter and found a cave in the side of a mountain. Cold and tired, she was about to light a lantern,but then she noticed that a bit further down the cave, there were blue and violet stones glowing brightly. She walked towards them and saw that from there, the entire tunnel was covered in them, lit almost as well as though it was daylight. Mystified, she proceeded. After some walking, the tunnel opened into a giant grotto.

It was mostly closed and mostly dry, except for a lake in the center and like the tunnel, it was covered in crystals. In the center of the lake there was a tiny island with a spiral sitting on it.

“Who are you?”, the spiral’s voice echoed.

“I’m Amethyst. I was looking for a place to stay for the night... Are you all alone here?”

They talked for a while and the spiral introduced herself as Amber, a servant of tidelord. She’d been exalted many years ago and appointed the duty of guarding the lake, for the tidelord had sacred it. The lake granted strength to dragons, but also to monsters, which is why Amber protected it so no dragon or monster would abuse it and good dragons could gain access.

Amethyst looked around and she found it to be beautiful, but also disappointing, because the place was meant to aid good dragons, yet there was no one around. She saw so much potential there that she made a contract with Amber. Amber would let Amethyst found a shelter there, for travelers, the lost and the ill. In return everyone who entered would first have to vow to protect the lake at all costs and Amethyst would have to take responsibility for them.

Many dragons came to stay for a night or two or until they had an injury patched up and then left, but not all. Some stayed. Nature, light, earth and arcane dragons used the powers of the lake to grow plants there, healers settled, kind dragons of every element came together and they became a family. They formed bonds with other clans and the strongest dragons took on the task of warding off monsters.

Their home came to be known throughout the southern icefield and nearby domains as the sanctuary.
