Dragons have to be named to fight in the Coliseum, and you want to look up guides on how to level your dragons. They have good suggestions on how to concentrate your stat points.

I learned dragons do not die if you do not feed them and you can spend enough time fighting in the Coliseum to win food for your dragons so you can spend your Gatherings on Scavenging for unhatched eggs.
