Filled with flighty free spirits after a rocky start, the clan has slowly come into its own, becoming a home for specters and outcasts hearing the call of the silent wind.

The clan's members hail from many regions, but now follow the Windsinger, going wherever the winds take them. Largely nomadic, the lair in the Zephyr Steppes is rarely filled and it has been years since the entire clan has been in the same place. Still, they communicate to each other by leaving ghost stories and rumors everywhere they go.

H I S T O R Y

The Chronicles of The Alterventus

Long ago, in early spring, Gypsum met Onyx and the two decided to travel together. Chert was a young fey, filled with curiosity and prone to sticking his nose into things that bit back. Onyx, a guardian at the time, stuck with him because she found the situations that he would find himself in hilarious. After all, everyone needs to be something making life interesting.

Over the course of their travels they where slowly joined by other dragons and the odd couple became the odd clan. When a sizable number of dragons had joined the founding three Onyx became the clan's first leader mostly because she didn't go on week long research binges where she refused to communicate with anyone. Among the first dragons to join the clan were a pair of wildclaw hatchlings, Chert and Shale. These two would lead the second generation of the clan.

Chert's dream was to lead the clan and he eventually reached his goal due to his accomplishments in battle against the beast clans. During the early years the clan was constantly battling the beast clans. As a clan that had no set territory they often found themselves in territory that belonged to others, usually the beast clans. Onyx fell during a skirmish with the clans of the kelp beds, beginning Gypsums obsession with spirits and bringing the dead back to life. The leadership of the clan was passed to Chert and under his leadership the clan continued to grow.

Gypsum's continuous experiments eventually brought the first ghosts in the clan and the clan wide obsession with death eventually brought them to the shrine of the silent wind. A strange place where the wind is always felt but never heard. As the clan became known for its preoccupation with death it earned its name of Alterventus and the clan semipermanently settled around the shrine. Semi-permanently because they, like most wind dragons, seem to be physically incapable of staying still.

After leading and helping Alterventus to find its purpose Chert died suddenly due to sickness, ending his leadership of the clan. The suddenness of the death left the clan floundering again to find itself. Understanding that the clan could not stay leaderless for long the legendary dragons elected Caerbannog, Chert's former philosophy student, to be the leader. This could have turned out horribly, however Caerbannog turned out to be surprisingly competent despite the lack of signs from the other wind of his leadership qualities.

The view that Caerbannog's leadership of the clan is only temporary arose from the fact that he does not possess the silent wind's sign of leadership. This view has hung over Caerbannog's head since he took the position and has most likely lead to his preoccupation with finding his successor so that he can get back to his life.

My History on This Site

I have been floating around this site since 2015. Besides a few small pieces of lore and doomed art projects, I didn't start setting up any significant projects until late in 2018 when I started collecting ideas for the clan's overarching lore. Now I am making up for wasted time adding details to my dragons and writing about them.

D E T A I L S

______The Alterventus make their permanent lairs in the Zephyr Steppes around the shrine of the silent wind. The shrine predates the clan with the two founders being drawn to it after Onyx's death. Today the clan works to fix the run down shrine and restore it to its former beauty between their travels.

______There is only a rough hierarchy within the clan with a single leader and an inner circle of important dragons who have become legends in their own right. The leader is elected by the legendary dragons, but it is known within the clan that fireflies tend to flock to those who are especially in tune with the silent wind making them especially likely to be considered for the position of leader. The leader makes decisions about the clan, the inner circle back him up. The wanders and the ghosts do as they please.

______The legendary dragons have devoted themselves to the call of the silent wind. They wander the world working with spirits and fighting the undead. They also bring back items to add to the shrine and dragons to add to the clan. The other dragons are merely wanderers who hear the call and follow it sometimes.

______The wanderers engage in a wide range of activities including trading items and stories from around the world. They take care of the more earthly needs of the clan such as food. Several are also craftsmen and skilled artists who help in the restoration of the buildings and gardens of the shrine.

______The ghosts serve as honored elders, to be listened to with a grain of salt, as they no longer understand the needs of the living. They often serve as scouts and spies, relaying information to the living dragons of the clan that the clan would be hard pressed to gain otherwise.
