Uh, I didn't think about him that much. it's just he tries to avoid getting himself into tight spotes, and he basically went through life pretending he was noble, and then decided "Why not make myself a knight as well?". Nocturne means good learner too!
Other than that, Roderick is supposed to be somewhat of a paladin, yes. More of someone actually pretending to be a paladin, but that's supposed to be the looks of one ;)
