Soren stood behind the group of dragons, his expression what other dragons routinely termed his “stone face.” He understood the implication, and let them believe he was as strong as the Earth. As long as they also believed he was as powerful as a Plague. “I don’t know.” Lightning sighed, leaning back on her heels as she looked at Valiant’s map, overlaid with Contrail’s maps of air currents and Celtine’s investigations into the Harpy flock’s current position. “There are a lot of them; only a few of us. Casualties will be high.” “Let them.” Cap snapped out his wings, showing the scars on his skin, in his wing membranes. The monstrous orange Guardian could still fly, but Soren thought it was only a matter of time before he came across a flock too strong for him. “They’re gaining strength while we’re just sitting here talking.” “It’s true.” Soren pointed out another flock at the corner of Valiant’s map. “Another flock was moving along the gorge three days ago. They’ll arrive in days.” “Most of the clans here are merchants,” Lightning said. “They’ll have a field day.” “The flock is also confident in their reinforcements…” Soren watched in his mind’s eye as one of many possible futures unfolded there. The flocks could merge, their power and tenacity growing. An small army with morale alone could be difficult to face. An army with morale and numbers on their side? “But if we intercept the reinforcements, rout them, they may think twice. Make them easier to defeat when it comes down to that.” Hydra’s fins quivered in delicious excitement. “Beat them before the battle.” “It’s risky,” Lorne said. “Putting ourselves right in position for an ambush.” “But the reward could be worth it,” Soren said, “if it will save us losses later.” |

Soren is the Tempest Chase tactician, not known for his sunny personality or pleasant small talk. Fortunately, Soren’s place comes from his ability to understand and assess a situation and enemy quickly, and determine a course of action quickly. He is, perhaps, inclined to err on the side of the technical definition of mercenary than Lightning, or even Hydra, even though he has no personal attachment to monetary gain. Motivated by the desire to be irreplaceable, Soren considers it his highest duty to grow his new clan in size and reputation. Even his own fame seems secondary to him as he pushes Lightning, Hydra, and their band of mercenaries to new heights. The first to admit he doesn’t have many friends, Soren doesn’t do much to change this. Socializing for the sake of socializing is a terrible waste of time. However, as strange as it may seem, Soren knows a good dragon when he meets one. He respects Lightning as a commander and has more in common with Hydra than, perhaps, he’d care to admit. During particularly quiet times, he can be prodded into other more academic activities. He plays chess with Radek and debates the place of history in dragons’ current conflicts with the beastclans with Linwood. On the other hand, his dispassionate point of view can be infuriating to dragons who place their emotional intuition above Soren’s “kill or be killed” attitude. Though Soren functions primarily as a tactician, Soren is a talented and powerful Plague mage. He’s lived in and with Wind dragons, however, long enough that he can even use scraps of Wind magic to spread his pestilent reach further than it has any right to. It’s said that Soren could topple entire ranks of dragons with a breath of wind, but that’s only half-true. Though Soren could summon a breeze to help him, it’s really his toxic attitude that really finishes the job. A Plague dragon by birth, Soren was abandoned by his clan at an age too young for any dragon. While he would rather hide that he is a Plague dragon, he realizes he cannot. Even still, like Hydra, Soren lives by the credo of “the strong survive.” He has managed to instill these thoughts even in the Wind-born clan of the Tempest Chase, and lives to make sure his new family is among the strongest if and when things go wrong. |

Traveling with a troupe of monster hunters sometimes leads to fascinating discoveries. Once, while clearing out an enchanted laboratory in the Arcane Isles, Soren stumbled upon a pair of swords and a shield magically infused, apparently, with a personality. After stopping his friends from destroying the magical artifact, Soren promised it safety if it shared its secrets. The Sorcerous Arms laughed and, introducing himself as “Ike,” said he had no secrets. He's been protecting Soren ever since... or else, Soren's protecting him. |
