The world shook, perhaps knowing the trouble it was in. Dragons and gods alike had become complacent and forgetful. For all the powerful magic stirring, abominations fed off the energy as much as the sane and purposed.

The hunters stood on the precipice overlooking the valley and the river below. They’d never seen anything like it, the destruction and the pain. Aroer hadn’t either, and now he knew why the dragons of Sornieth had no choice.

“It’s… it’s grotesque,” Soren the tactician said.

“And enormous,” a particularly large Guardian named Cap said. “How in the seven peaks of Cloudscrape are we supposed to beat something of that size?”

“Pray.”

Aroer was no priest, but his patron god was one of justice and protection, preservation of the good and bad alike. Like many dragons, the hunters would join the search for their gods once locked in the far reaches of their territory. This was a battle the dragons couldn’t fight on their own. The gods had to help them if they were to win. The dragons must band together as much as was possible to put down the Emperor arisen in the heart of their world. The dragons’ plight against the Beasts would be nothing when compared to this single being prancing and reveling in the destruction it wrought all over the plains of Light.

Soren scoffed at Aroer’s suggestion. “I prefer something more tangible than pleading with the giants of the distant past. Especially with so many of them withdrawn and at least one of them missing entirely.”

“We’ll redouble our efforts, then,” Aroer snapped. “The Lady of Light has said it herself: she’ll help. Even if all Imperials like me must suffer her wrath. We must think of the world before we think of ourselves.”

One may never meet a dragon more dutiful than Aroer. His many years have taught him many lessons, chief of those being that he has no greater purpose or pleasure than to serve the gods. A cornerstone of Aroer’s being is his religious calling binding him to the service of the god of his hatching━the Icewarden━as well as the god of his creation━the Lightweaver. All they do is good in his eyes, and his greatest goal is to follow in their enormous footsteps.

Aroer has seen many changes over the course of his long life, but no greater than the magical upheaval pulling new peaks from Fire and Arcane, and waking ancient monsters in Ice and Light. Aroer was briefly dismayed to hear the Lightweaver’s proclamation that his species was a mistake, but he could not refute the evidence. Emperors were a scourge to the land, and Imperial magic too strong for the good of the creatures wielding it. Aroer holds to the ancient wisdom of the lone Imperial, wandering in solitude and only mingling with others of his own kind when he is certain of no danger. Though the Tempest Chase counts a few Imperials among their number, they are rarely together.

There may be a dragon more religious than Aroer, but one would be looking for a long time to find one. Though his gods may lead him to the darkest place in Sornieth or destroy him outright, he will continue on his way. Despite this, Aroer seems sane and calculated. After all, the proof of Imperial danger (however unintentional) is there to see, and despite the gods’ troublesome quarreling and sometimes childish behavior, they’ve always seemed to act in dragonkind’s best interest. Aroer is willing to acknowledge there are things he cannot see from his comparatively diminutive height.

Aroer feels the weight of many years ahead of him, but he would think less of himself should he have no plan. He has every confidence the god of his eyes will preserve him to old age, but when he reaches the end, he knows what he will do. He will go home to wander the peaks of Cloudscrape Crags until the snow and Ice take him. He’ll be alone, forever, with only the Icewarden and his gaolers to be his company. No Imperial to disturb his rest, to never rise again. Aroer is many things, but he is no mistake to be rectified.

LAD - companion

The Shalebuck Aroer calls Lad has been with him since he was young. Lad is quite heavy, but Aroer is strong and large━even for an Imperial. Lad, like Aroer, is difficult to move and set in his ways, but loving and patient in a crisis all the same. He’s not one for tactics as Aroer must be, but acts as brute force when the need arises. In fact, Aroer and Lad may be considered an unstoppable force and immovable object working in tandem. If Aroer has any doubts about his mission, Lad is the first to listen, even though he doesn’t have much advice to offer. Some things must be worked out on one’s own. Still, the Shalebuck would defend his Imperial friend with his life, though, even against a god. Shalebucks have little use for such things.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

» Aroer Shivershine took his name as a young Imperial in deference to his two patron gods.

» Although Aroer believes entirely in the wisdom of the gods, he at times feels trapped by Lady Light’s denouncement of his breed. Nevertheless, he would never turn against them and despises followers of anything other than the Eleven.

» Even though Aroer follows his convictions and never stays in the company of Imperials that are not his native element of Ice, he is far from lonely. Next to Lad, his constant Shalebuck companion, Aroer is notably close friends with many Beastclans, Derecho the Shade researcher, and JJ the mediator.

» Aroer’s favorite food is softshell crabs.
