     Mere the Smartest
difficult takes a few seconds; impossible, a few minutes

Theme: Beyond the Night

━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Mere went through the collection of antiquities, discarding them each one by one like so much garbage. His assistant, Radek, bristled with each item he tossed to one side. Finally, Mere couldn’t handle it anymore.

“Well, what is it?” Mere asked. He knew very well what. He was going too fast for Radek. He’d want to investigate every little piece of everything like it was some great new discovery that could put their little operation on the map. He’d be wrong, but that was what he wanted.

Radek huffed in irritation. “You cannot possibly know what all this is.” He rescued a bundle of rods from the dust and polished them with his navy scarf.

Mere scoffed. He could, too, possibly know. But he didn’t have the time to explain it all, especially since there was absolutely no point. “Look, we don’t have a lot of time here. I’m not exactly keen on staying the night in these ruins. You?”

“I’d be fine with that,” their protector, a pitch-colored Guardian, said nearby.

“No! Lorne!” Mere snapped. “I was not talking to you!” He sighed. Forgotten where he was, thanks to the interruption.

Mere looked at Radek, his bright Watery eyes looking unnecessarily smug. “No, I wouldn’t like that,” Radek said. “Which is why we should be packing these things up to take them with us to study.” He put a worthless antique in his bag.

Mere laughed. He couldn’t help himself. “Study? Sure, yeah, how long do you want to spend on these trinkets? Months? A year? I’m not helping you. And we both know you’ve never done any truly noteworthy work without me.”

“You are such a child,” Radek finally snapped in exasperation.

Mere just grinned. “And, yet, I’m still smarter than you.”

Mere is a dragon out for his own gain and preservation, motivated primarily by proving his own peerlessness. Getting paid to be right for that would also be ideal. Mere, with his associate Radek (though Mere calls him his “assistant,” Radek calls himself Mere’s “colleague”), studies technological artifacts from the Second Age. This involves, among other things, identification, translation, reconstruction, and replication. Each artifact can take weeks and months to categorize correctly, but they’ve gotten so good at it that they can sometimes even cobble together several pieces of technological mysteries to form something new and useful in a matter of forty-two minutes. As Mere says, he does his best work when under the threat of imminent death.

Perhaps against his will, Mere spends the majority of his time in Radek’s company, since they are each the closest thing to an intellectual equal the other has found. Mere’s memory is even worse than the usual Tundra’s, however, sometimes forgetting even Radek’s name from time to time. He’d rather everyone who knows his name would forget, since he hates it. He manages to go by “Mere” most of the time, though Radek will call him Meredith when particularly frustrated (and still speaking Common Draconic). Before traveling with the Tempest Chase, Mere hired Lorne, a Guardian mercenary, to protect them while they explored the dark ancient ruins. Not that Mere needed any protection, of course. It’s only that his mind was too valuable to Sornieth to lose prematurely.

Even though Mere is, in fact, a Water dragon, he will always feel an attachment to Lightning and their interests. Still, Mere owes his ability to handle and identify Second Age artifacts so well to the fact that he is a highly-magical Water dragon. Mere has one of the strongest and deepest magic reserves of any in the Tempest Chase, and he uses it to great effect… after considerable practice, anyway. He’s been known to get himself into trouble, being too concentrated on whatever technological mystery he’s trying to solve, but more often than not he’s the one pulling others out of trouble, especially if they run amok of some dark, mutagenenic ruins from long ago.

━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Mere has neither time nor inclination for companionship for its own sake. Most will say this is because he couldn’t maintain a friendship if his life depended on it. Still, he has fabricated a deep relationship between himself and the Spiny Whale he calls Sam. He insists Sam once saved his life (in reality, it was probably Radek), and that Sam somehow likes him. Whenever a Spiney Whale appears just off the coast of the Zephyr Steppes, Mere proclaims it's Sam come to visit him. No one bothers to argue... since all whales look virtually the same to them.

11812.png Radek has been with Mere longer than either of them can remember, unfortunately for both of them. One of Mere’s favorite pastimes is to mercilessly degrade Radek for anything handy. Despite all of this, Radek respects Mere for his towering intellect, and is the first to help him should anything go monstrously wrong. The other dragons in the Chase think Mere respects Radek, too. After all, they can’t think of any other dragon that gives Mere chance after chance to be decent despite all evidence to the contrary. Perhaps Mere finally found his equal: a dragon he can’t chase away no matter how hard he tries.

During a short trip along the shoreline of the Sea of a Thousand Currents━and Mere isn’t sure how this happened━he somehow hired Chekov. To be sure, Chekov is a passable engineer, and probably even less socially capable than Radek, but he’s also just as annoying. As best as Mere can figure, Chekov’s parents pawned him off on them, hoping maybe some of that intelligence would rub off on their son. Since Chekov has proven himself handy in a pinch and good roughing it in the woods, he’s willing to put up with his attributing every great invention since the laser coil to his home Nature territory.

11512.png When Radek’s daughter came to live with the herd, Mere thought things couldn’t possibly get worse. When he met her, though, he couldn’t have been more surprised. She turned out to be delightfully intelligent, despite her unfortunate genetics (as Radek’s daughter) and the fact that she was little more than a hatchling. Mere realized that she was certainly teachable, and he didn’t realize how desperately he wanted a family, how desperately he wanted someone to look up to him, admire him, and perhaps even love him. For real. Because even Mere couldn’t fool himself all the time.

Lorne is not a Tundra. He’s a Guardian four times Mere’s size, which is why he hired the traveling mercenary from Fire territory to protect him and Radek while they went on their ruins spelunking expeditions. Never know when you’ll run into a starving corpse cleaner looking for a corpse to clean. Mere finds Lorne mostly intolerable, but he hasn’t figured out how to get rid of him, yet. Even though Mere joined the Tempest Chase for more protection that wasn’t Lorne, Lorne still somehow keeps coming along with them.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Mere’s full name is Meredith Famefire, bestowed upon him by the Noble Order of Scholars upon his induction. Woe befall any who say it aloud… at least, that’s what he likes to say. Radek keeps getting away with it anyway.
»
» Despite his “friendship” with Sam the Spiney Whale, Mere has recurring nightmares wherein he is eaten by a whale, usually under bizarre circumstances, such as Soren discovering Radek really is smarter than Mere.
»
» Most dragons agree that Mere couldn’t sweet-talk a Sweetpuff if his life depended on it. All the same, they also agree that something’s going on between Mere and Hydra...

aesthetic: Mere has no idea what aesthetic is. All the same, he thinks he’s a fairly attractive Tundra. He wears mostly dark colors to hide the dust and dirt of the ruins he runs around in.
likes: insulting Radek, learning, large fields to eat all to himself, being superior to all
dislikes: monsters, darkness, lemons, growing old, not knowing something, social situations

Should he be a Pearlcatcher? Objectively yes.
It puts the Canada patch on the correct arm, so obviously.

But everyone's a Tundra here.
