Warden didn’t know why she was walking along the beach tonight. There were no prisoners to watch, no work to do. A quiet night… she hated quiet nights.

The water suddenly lapped against something nearby, catching Warden’s attention. Something shimmered in the water, throwing the blue moon’s light back in a way the water wouldn’t. When she got closer, she saw it was only Sadko. The Fae floated on his back, his strips of wings edged in purple and scattered with holes like a lionfish’s fins. Unlike a lionfish’s fins, though, Sadko’s were covered with bright blue scales, hardened and heavy.

“Come to watch the tide?” he asked, tilting his head to see her. “Warden, yes?”

“Yes.” Warden waded out into the water next to him. “I mean, I’m the warden. I’m here because there was nothing else to do.” She sighed, dipping her wing down to touch the gently rolling water.

“Oh.” With a motion as quick as a fish, Sadko turned and dove into the waves. He came back up a moment later, his wings helping to keep him afloat in spite of the gembond making him too heavy to fly. “That’s the nice thing about the ocean, I think. It keeps doing when there’s nothing to do.”

Warden smiled, though against her will. “I guess. It just keeps doing the same thing over and over, though.” She sighed. “Trapped by the moon and the shore, always telling it what to do.”

“Oh, no, is it trapped?” Sadko looked around, and then up at the moon. “I don’t think so. I think it’s very happy.”

Of course, he would think that. The Water dragon dove again, his bright blue eyes the only thing she could see beyond the dark surface. When he came up again, he said, “The ocean does what it wants, does what it should do, and can’t do what it shouldn’t. What else would be happier?”

Sadko grew up as a fisherfae on the shores of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, his clan living peacefully with the local Maren school, even helping them in skirmishes with other schools. Even though Sadko was technically trained in catching fish, he proved himself an excellent warrior to fight alongside the Maren. Whenever their friendly Maren neighbors called upon Sadko’s clan for help, he was always the first to volunteer. His skill in swimming with the school had increased, as had his prowess with his trident. In exchange for his clan’s help, the Maren school protected their fishing and trading across the sea and gave Sadko a Mantarune pup. On these voyages, Sadko grew knowledgeable and rich, even finding a mate in a beautiful Spiral.

However, the sea tends to erode even the strongest rocks. Over time, he grew away from his lovely Spiral, and his clan and the school turned against one another. Sadko and his mantarune helped to defend his clan, but it was no use. The clan was pushed back to the shadows of the Tangled Wood, and they never returned to the shore. With his way of life gone, his mate lost to the dark woods, even his mantarune far away, Sadko tried again to find a family. And again. And again. He joined a traveling group of monster hunters that sometimes fought Maren schools, and traveled further than he ever would have even if he stayed on the sea forever. He still reels in catches, and still throws them back. His children leave him as much as his mates do. But that’s the nature of the sea: no wave holds upon the sand, no drop of water visits the same shore twice.

One thing remains true: every drop of water will always return to the ocean one day. It may take a long time, and Sadko proves this is true. Sadko is no oracle like his Water-bound cousins, but is as calm as a sea of glass. He’s learned a lot, but has yet to figure out how to apply it. Sadko decided to make a list every day of the things he’d done in the past, and what he did that day. His family, his skills, the places he’d traveled to, the friends and enemies he’d made. The list grew larger, like rain falling into the ocean. Sadko makes the most of every place they stop, meeting the local dragons and paying homage to the local gods. He’s even come to like the traveling, adopting a bit more of the Wind than he’d like to admit. But perhaps it’s for the best. Wind is its strongest over the Water, after all.

Makari is Sadko’s son. They do not even close to get along. In fact, they hate each other. But they also don’t. Family’s weird like that.

Fighting alongside another dragon clan ousting the Maren from their watery backyard, Sadko led the Tempest Chase’s mercenaries. They were victorious, but at a cost that Sadko hadn’t anticipated. Though some dragons were lost, he discovered an adolescent Maren among the fallen after the battle, still alive but injured and traumatized. With her school destroyed, and local Maren civil wars in full-swing, Sadko took her in himself to care for her until she could do so herself. Since he’s used to the sometimes outright hatred even his own children harbor for him, and he considers her anger toward him more earned, he doesn’t much mind the terrible living conditions he’s made for himself.

» Sadko’s surname, taken from a standard warrior’s surname in his old clan, is Waverider.

» Having inherited his gembond condition, Sadko has never been able to fly very well. This has never impacted his ability to swim. However, since his clan was chased from their homes underwater, Sadko has had to learn how to get around on land. He doesn’t much like it. The larger members of the Tempest Chase carry Sadko whenever they must fly to move from place to place.

» Though Sadko says he’s looking for a steady mate, he’s had a handful over his lifetime: an unnamed Wildclaw, a Bogsneak named Ari, the Skydancer Serezha, Solar the Coatl, a Guardian named ZinderaeScratch, the Pearlcatcher Nora, RoyalViola the Spiral, Payne the Imperial, Optica the Spiral, and Maree the Tundra.
