Baker
Formerly Temporary Ice Flight Representative in the Council of Elders

Joined Clan Diamond Dust 1/1/15

genes: facet? + underbelly?

bio in progress

- Came unnamed, spent some time in the clan before the clan leaders finally called her in and told her that they were going to call her Glacier unless she could come up with something better later

- Self conscious about aqua antlers that don't match the rest of her, much happier wearing a floppy hat to cover them up.

It was over half a year into her stay with Clan Diamond Dust that the clan leaders realized that she still didn't have a role within the clan. And another 6 months went by before they sent their admin dargon to discuss her role...

Turns out Glacier had been practicing her baking skills as a hobby. With the size of the clan, Chess could use someone to assist who concentrated solely on the baking needs of the clan.

Day 5 Fire Challenge - Entry: Blazin' Pepper-Peach Cookies
Fire Ant Fire Flower Flameweed Golden Pepper Firefly Potash Peach

Chess decided to take the day off - he had never attended the opening day of the festival, as he had always been competing in Mistral Meals. So this year Glacier volunteered to take the challenge on the first official day of the festival (even though celebrations had really started the previous week).

Fortunately, the ingredients worked to her speciality: baking. She listened carefully to what the judge had to say and decided to give him a dish that would have a surprising spicy twist: cookies!

Even though this was her first competition, Glacier went in with a solid game plan. Baking was as much of a science as an art and she was very aware of how much time each step of her process would take.

She knew that she wanted to incorporate two types of spicy heat into her cookies - one into the dough and one that would give a "pop" of heat. She decided to add minced Golden Pepper into a sugar cookie dough batter, along with some Potash Peach for flavor.

While that was in the oven, she prepared the toppings. FIrst she boiled the juice of a sweet Potash Peach to create a glaze and then coated both sides of the Fire Flowers. Glacier placed those on a cooling rack, then turned her attention to the Fire Ants. Since this was a Fire challenge, she decided to go punny and use a Fryer. (As an Ice dragon, she felt obligated to work a pun into her entry. She thought about it: Fire/Fryer. Would it be obvious? She shook her head - no time to waste on puns while she had food to make.)

She added ground up Firefly to the batter for her Fire Ants - Fireflies were known for being extremely spicy so it should add a kick to her crunchy ant topping. Once the ants were fried, she began to assemble the cookies.

First - the glazed Fire Flower petals, placed on top of the round cookies to look like a flower. Then, Glacier carefully placed a few ants per cookie on top of the flowers - since the ants were still warm, they melted the sugar coating a little to help them stick. (Glacier set aside some cookies without ants for her and Yara, since they were both vegetarians.)

Once cooled, she arranged the cookies in a simple flower pattern on a tray and waited for the judge to visit her area.

Day Five - Entry: SeaJelly Pie
Nebula Floaters Pineapple Shiners Darktide Jellyfish Amaranth Miniature Potash Peach Potash Peach Luminous Almonds

Glacier stared at the jellyfish. She tried not to let the horror she felt inside appear on her face. She had been so excited about the jam theme this year. It fit perfectly with her speciality as a baker. And this... this was not jam. Or jelly. Or anything sweet that worked with her pastries. She had even been thinking about making donuts today. Donuts!

Why had Chess taken today off?? Normally they checked out the ingredients and subbed in on days that make sense. But the Imperial had needed a break, after the intense judging ((experience and then the letdown)) by Bloodstone the previous day, and she had volunteered to step in, excited that she finally would have a chance to make some jams in the competition.

And now... now she had to work with seafood. Blobby seafood. Weird translucent seafood.

Glacier tentatively tasted the (carefully cleaned) ingredients. One had a bit of sweetness. One was a bit acidic. The last was... well... tasteless but definitely had a gel-like consistency, the type that would firm up a filling.

The tundra contemplated them for a second. They reminded her of a pie filling - sugar/acid/filling base. Maybe... maybe that would work.

She started on her crust first, since that would need some time to chill. Glacier used an amaranth grain flour as her base, since it was nice and hearty and would stand up to the filling well.

Next, Glacier worked on the filling. All the required seafood ingredients went into it, as well as Miniature Potash Peach that would add a sour note, hitting another major taste group. She poured the mixture into the pie pan and covered it with a top crust.

While the pie was baking, Glacier made a jam-like sauce with Potash Peach. Above 10 minutes before the pie was done, she brushed the pie with the glaze and did it again when it came out of the oven.

As a final touch, the Tundra toasted the Luminous Almonds and sprinkled them on top of the baked pie. Now, to see what the judge thought of it.

Pfeffernusse: The sauce you made to go with this is great! The bug in a jar was a great decoration! M says you named the buggie 'Garnish'. It kinda smells like pine needles which is a great smell.
Michelin: They say it isn't about how it looks but how it tastes, but they never saw this monstrosity. You boiled it to mush, which somehow made it more edible.

2020 Mistral Meals

Day 6/Friday - Banana-Fig Bread

The normally calm prep area that the Clan Diamond Dust competitors used was a bit... less organized this morning. It was a lot louder than normal, and there were pots and pans clearly not being used all over the place.

Chess was missing (on his day off) - since this was a meatless round, with required elements practically begging for dessert, Glacier was tagged to create today's entry. Her experience working with the ingredients made her the perfect choice!

With her, however, was a newcomer to the kitchen. Apparently Glacier had a little helper today! This could be a fun time - or a disaster in the making.

The little Coatl was enjoying his first festival outside of Ice. Somehow he had convinced/begged the clan leaders to let him attend the Mistral Jamboree, as he heard from his clanmates that it was a super fun spring festival and AyJay wanted to see for himself.

Today he got to help Glacier in the kitchen - an actual competition!

"Ok, AyJay, let's take a look at what we've got - bananas, cinnamon, and mint. What do you think?" asked Glacier.

"Ice cream! Ice cream!" AyJay said.

"Yes, we could do ice cream - make a nice sundae. Or - banana bread. I know a lot of other dragons will probably be making it too, but I'm a baker and we could do a really good one."

"But... ice cream?" asked AyJay.

"We'll see," said Glacier, smiling.

Entry: Banana-Fig Bread

Required Ingredients: Red Banana Cinnamon Spearmint

Additional Ingredients: Ripe Yellow Banana Banana Tree Pith Sunbeam Fig Alstroemeria

"Ok, can you go get a bowl and look for the treasure while I prep the bananas?" asked Glacier. AyJay ran into the back and promptly knocked over a stack of metal prep bowls. Grabbing one, and hurridedly stacking the rest in a messy pile, the little Coatl checked under all the tables in the back, since most of the bigger dragons wouldn't think to look there. Disappointed that he didn't find anything, AyJay brought the bowl back to Glacier.

"Now, please smash these bananas." The bowl contained red bananas and some ripe yellow bananas, for additional sweetness, plus banana tree pith for added fiber.

While AyJay was doing that, Glacier could concentrate on some of the harder tasks, like figuring out how in the heck she was going to incorporate spearmint.

Bits of the banana flew out of the bowl and clung to her fur as AyJay smashed up the fruit. Glacier sighed and tried to brush it off as best she could while she thought about her next step.

You could do banana bread with just bananas... or add some nuts for texture and protein... or add some additional dried fruit. Glacier headed back to the pantry and contemplated the ingredients, eventually grabbing dried sunbeam fig to add to the mix.

"Ok, AyJay - time to make the batter! Let's make sure to measure everything carefully," said Glacier.

...a little while later and with a lot of flour all over the kitchen and, again, in Glacier's fur...

"That looks good - let me just grate some of this cinnamon into the mix and do a final stir and I'll put it into the oven!" After her stop at the oven, Glacier returned to their station with one final ingredient, perfect for desserts, Alstroemeria.

"Now, I'm going to boil some water and sugar with the spearmint leaves in it for flavor, along with the Alstroemeria."

Once it was reduced into a simple syrup, Glacier strained the liquid and put it into a creamer for easier pouring later.

*ding*

Glacier pulled the banana-fig bread from the oven, poured the syrup over the bread to soak into it, and put it on a rack to cool.

"Ok, AyJay, final steps! We're going to sugar some spearmint leaves for a garnish."

Once the bread was cooled, Glacier cut it and put one slice onto a fancy plate with two sugared spearmint leaves for the "judge's presentation" dish. If she had more time, Glacier would have toasted the banana bread in a frying pan with some better and served with a homemade vanilla ice cream, but fresh banana bread was almost as good.

"Time for us to try it out! You've been a big help today. Here's your slice," said Glacier, smiling at AyJay. "We'll go out for ice cream after this."

Mistral Meals 2024

Monday - Day 2

E4VhwHt.png

Sweets so soon in the competition? That means the clan's baker is up, and Chess gets a day off already! Time for him to do some shopping for specialty items to take back with them to the Southern Icefields. The deals may not be as good this early on, but the selection will likely be better than he normally sees.

Over in the tents, Glacier is representing Clan Diamond Dust! Chess had been the clan's representative in the tournament-style competitions, but since the original format was back, the Imperial was willing to give Glacier the chance to return and show off her baking skills.

Glacier looked over the required ingredients. Although she turned up her nose a bit at the corn syrup-soaked winter rations, it was still a better option for her than the ruby-throated hummingbird.

Hmm... honeybees... sugar... honey... honeycomb. What about a nice toffee mixture? The biggest challenge would be from making it too sweet. A few extra ingredients would probably help...

Entry: Honeycomb Toffee Crunch

Required Ingredients:
Honeybee Fishy Cotton Candy Longneck Winter Rations

Additional Ingredients:
Blue Honeycomb Centaur Nut Mix Cinnamon

To start, Glacier broke the winter rations into smaller pieces (much smaller, almost smashed). She added the nut mix to the bowl and quickly mixed together the ingredients, spreading them on a cookie sheet. This would serve as her base layer that she would pour the honeycomb toffee mixture on. Before she set it aside, she grated some fresh cinnamon stick over it, to give the flavor an extra kick while staying in the right flavor profile.

Next up was some multi-tasking: she began by melting the fishy cotton candy on the stove and straining it to remove the fish bits (no one said they had to use every part of the required ingredients). While this was going, Glacier put a pan of honeybees, lightly salted with some oil, to roast in the oven. This should make them nice and crunchy.

To the melted cotton candy, she added blue honeycomb (and other pantry ingredients). This was a bit of a risk, but using the blue as opposed to the regular would help it set faster, which was a bonus in the competition. Also, it was festive and unexpected and added a bit of fun to the plate.

She quickly poured the sugar-honey-toffee mixture over the oats and nuts. Since the blue honeycomb set so quickly, she didn't have much time for her final step: sprinkling the roasted honeybee and some sea salt flakes on top.

Once everything cooled, the happy Tundra would cut the crunchy honeycomb toffee into pieces. Hmm... now how would she plate the finished dish? Winterbelles could make a lovely edible flower garnish that would go well with the toffee.

(If you are thinking that the clan's baker didn't actually bake much, well... shhhh....)

Although the plate wasn't officially being "judged" this year, the judges, other contestants, and festival goers were still dropping by to check out the entries, and Glacier wanted to make sure it tasted AND looked good for them!

~~~
Cloudsong Celebration 2024
Glacier felt good about her entry in the previous day's Mistral Meals. One of the judges (even if they weren't actually "judging" this year) had even asked her for the toffee recipe!
Today she was going to snack her way through the festival grounds. Surely there were some plant-based deep fried festival foods around. And maybe a fancy flavored lemonade.
On her way to the stand, Glacier felt herself swept in the crowd listening to the tale of The Crescendo's Twist. It was her first time hearing the story and she found herself fascinated by the striped spiral's retelling. She picked up the miniature replica of the Crescendo at her feet at the end of the tale and decided it would make an excellent souvenir. She knew just the shelf in her lair where she could put it!
