Biography
Merle the Thief we’ll get along if you give me your stuff Theme: The Team |
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Sayen was never impressed with Merle’s antics. She called him “the blackbird,” but not for the reasons he thought. Blackbirds were, to him, a symbol of death and destruction. To Sayen, they were loud and annoying birds that ate through crops still on the stalk. Still, she liked him, so she put up with him. Sayen adjusted her bow in its leather sling and waited for the Mirror to catch up. “It’s no wonder your sister sends you on missions alone.” Merle pounced to a nearby rock, glanced around furtively, and then looked back at Sayen. “I’m faster alone. Well, alone with just you. The Ridgeback would slow us down.” “I’m sure.” Sayen glanced around, also, incredibly aware of the weight in her pack, and Merle’s. “All the same, we should pick up our pace.” They’d scored a cache of weapons in the woods belonging to other Corven like Sayen. Sayen had no qualms about stealing from her own people. Any Talonok, she was convinced, would do the same. Any Raptorik would also chase them down easily, free of the fetters of weight. Merle didn’t wait to be asked twice. He took a leap off his small boulder, his wings carrying him ahead and he hit the ground running. Sayen could keep up, barely, when he ran this way ordinarily. This time, his stash of stolen weapons got in his way. Sayen surged ahead, and looked back with a smirk. “Look carefully, little blackbird. I’ll beat you back to camp if you keep that up.” Merle grinned at the challenge, redoubling his speed. His claws caught in the earth, giving him grip. He turned with the flow of the hills, took advantage of every rise to spread his wings, and rest his paws. He laughed as he soared beside her. “Not a chance.” |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
Merle is Jonathan and Nadia’s son, the procurement officer of Abbey’s little band of madcap misfits. In less colorful words: Merle is a thief. Merle is no hunter, and he’s not one to get his claws dirty, to his sister’s eternal shame. Still, he knows value when he sees it, a trait he supposedly gained from his mother, though she’s never approved of his use. Merle’s made himself useful in many a raid, stealing the enemy’s weapons of war, food supplies, shelter, and anything else that may be useful. He’ll destroy these things if absolutely necessary, but he’d really rather not. He hates to see a good thing go to waste. Merle’s appraising eye sees far beyond what glitters, even, at times, to his own peril. Once upon a raid, Merle stumbled upon an injured Corven, left for dead by her people when they fled. Merle knew that to introduce a Talonok into the Chase at such a delicate time would be a problem, but he wasn’t about to let her die, either. He hid her away and nursed her back to health and sent her back to her clan. That worked out… for a while. Eventually, Sayen and Merle crossed paths again, but this time they stayed together. Most of the Tempest Chase remain unaware that Merle works so closely with a Talonok, because Merle isn’t sure what they would do or say. He’s not sure what his worst fear is: for Sayen’s safety, or his own continued comfort. Merle is a Wind dragon, first-hatched of his parents. Though his younger sister (by mere seconds, she insists, so it's really unfair to call him "older") usually takes charge in their interactions, it’s clear that Merle is the older. He obliges Abbey by letting her worry over his safety, and readily acknowledges that she’s the one with all the big plans. As much as Abbey explores the future through her planning and leading, Merle explores the present. He flies by the seams of his tunic, a propensity that only ever gets on his sister’s nerves. However, no one can doubt that they work incredibly well together and they are almost never seen apart. And not far behind, rolling her eyes over the antics of the children, is Sayen. She must enjoy being irritated. |
━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Tempest Chase's relationship with the Talonok has recently deteriorated, perhaps beyond repair. After a Talonok attack on their family, Moor and Heather only stop short of wishing every last Talonok dead. Merle is less willing to leave an injured being to their fate, which was how he met Sayen. Though Merle understands the pain driving the Tempest Chase's campaign against the Talonok, he isn't willing to punish every member of the species for something they didn't do. |

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Merle chose his parents’ surname, Longhouse, when he was old enough. » » Merle is a bit of a minimalist. He wears what he’s gotten for free and has only a tiny satchel to carry his things when the Tempest Chase picks up and moves. In fact, Merle is the quickest of all dragons to pack his things because he only has a handful to begin with. |
aesthetic: Merle likes dark colors to help him blend into the nights he usually works in. But he’ll wear anything he didn’t have to pay for. |
likes: saving money, determining value, keeping a level head dislikes: boredom, loneliness, sentimentality _________________________________________________________ |
