Biography

sphene3.jpg

Titanite, also known as sphene, is typically green but can be a variety of colors including colorless, yellow, red, grey, brown, or black. Its official geological name is calcium titanium silicate. It can be mildly radioactive, due to rare earth elements, especially cerium being a common inclusion or thorium partially replacing the calcium. If it is radioactive or is in an area with radioactivity, its internal crystal structure breaks down through a process called metamictization.

It is notable for having high dispersion of light along with a higher refractive index than diamond. This means that it is more "sparkly" than diamond. Stones that are durable enough to be made into jewelery and not greatly radioactive are therefore highly prized. Unfortunately, titanite rarely forms gem-quality crystals and is often brittle and unsuited for jewelery.

Titanite was named by Martin Klaproth for its titanium content, at 24% and non-gem-quality stones are a good source of titanium oxide for bright white pigments. Its other name, sphene, comes from the Greek word for wedge as its crystals are usually wedge-shaped.
