“I don’t think you understand, Princess.” Soren always spoke to her like she was a child. Perhaps she was. But he was, too. “We’re relatively few in number. We cannot fight against a dominant Plague clan without severe casualties.” She was more alone than ever. Soren came to her tent without the company of the more-reasonable and understanding Lightning. Even without personal hardship, she seemed to understand. Elincia thought about what Soren said all the same. “I don’t want casualties...” “I’d question your sanity if you did.” Soren did her the courtesy of looking part-way to sad. “We don’t fight for free. Certainly not other dragons.” “I understand it’s difficult,” Elincia started. Soren didn’t let her finish. “I understand you’re Moor’s family, but if we start making exceptions for every Skydancer and Centaur, the Tempest Chase will be would of business before next Jamboree. And,” Soren added, “we’re mercenaries. We haven’t seen one coin cross our palms.” Elincia snapped her mouth shut and stared. She hadn’t been raised as royalty with all the trappings, the deference and respect, but Soren certainly treated her as less. “Is that all you care about? Money?” “I care about appearance,” Soren snapped, his wings and crest flaring. “Lightning’s reputation is at stake. Surely you understand. Royalty must be above petty common life, and mercenaries above politics and loans made on favors.” Elincia sniffed. “A noble refusal…” Soren shook his head. “We’re above nobility, too.” |

Peace is a large burden to put on any one dragon’s shoulders, but Elincia feels it is her responsibility. After living as secret princess to a clan in Arcane territory, and losing everything she never had to a conflict between her clan and a Plague clan, Elincia fled to live with a nearby Talonok clan that had friendly relations with her clan’s ruling family. Even though she hired mercenary friends of her uncle to help her gain back her clan’s territory, they were unsuccessful. Elincia eventually left to live in Wind territory with her uncle, never forgetting how the Beastclans helped her. If the cultural differences between Wind and Arcane were not enough, Elincia was shocked to find her uncle’s clan at war with the very Beastclan she’d been saved by. From that moment on, she viewed it as her job to make peace between dragons and Beasts. She does battle fits of overwhelming doubt, since she’s only one dragon and she was never trained for this. The hurt between the two groups are deeper than she could imagine. Every dragon, and every beast has done wrong at one time or another. Someday perhaps they can forget the bad things that hold them back, even if they seem unforgivable. Perhaps it would be better to forget the truth entirely if is only used as a weapon... She knows perhaps she’s naive. But part of her hopes she always will be. Elincia is a very private dragon, preferring her own company to that of many dragons. That is not to say she doesn’t have many dragons that consider her a friend. In fact, most dragons find her a steady companion with clear and outspoken opinions when given an appropriate venue to share them. Arcane is entirely about the discovery of new things, and Elincia sometimes feels that peace is one of those wholly unexplored areas of the map in terms of dragon history. Perhaps Beastclan history, as well. She sometimes wonders if her time would be better spent making a spell to turn back the clock to undo all the terrible things that have been done, but time travel is probably messy. She’s learned a certain wariness of too much exploration from Arcane, too. |

Many of Elincia’s friends that saved her from the same fate as the rest of her clan stayed in Arcane territory, since it is their home. Along the way, however, Elincia met other members of other Talonok flocks. Janaff comes from a flock based in the Blacksand Annex, and agreed to travel with Elincia in order to improve relations between his flock and the Chase. There’s still a long way to go, but Janaff’s excellent vision lets him see the light at the end of the tunnel. As Elincia herself is not a fighter, Janaff considers it his duty to protect her as much as he’s able. His kindness, insight, and vision for the future give Elincia hope. |
