I would have done anything for my pack.

Even though they were quarrelsome, even though they were impulsive and snapped at me and threatened to bite me at times, even though they quarreled over the prey and we often got into wrestling matches that ended up in more than chipped horns and bruises, one thing was absolutely certain.

They were my pack, and my loyalty laid with them.

That was my one greatest strength and weakness that remains till this day. My loyalty is so strong that it can carry me to the grave and back, and it very nearly did.

We called our pack the Skullcrushers; scavengers and renegades, but were closely knit. Many could have mistaken us for family, but despite our ways, we were a pack. Nothing could have separated us; storm, plague, battle, or death itself. There comes a time when a dragon, related or not, becomes as close as a brother, and after that nothing will be able to dissolve the bond. Our bond may had not been formed through blood, but it had been forged through battle and broken spirits, which ties dragons together like nothing else.

We were inseparable.

That is, until the day the Ridgebacks arrived.

That day started out like any other. We roamed the lands of Sornieth right on the edge of the Tangled Wood, planning on reaching the wilds of Ashfall Waste by the end of the week. It was a hot summer, so hot that one could almost see the heat rising off of our skin and smell the absolute exhaustion that pertained among us. For once we were too tired to fight, all that we wished was to crouch underneath the shadow of the trees and drink from the little stream that trickled near our camp.

Of course, life likes to present your hardest challenges when you are the least prepared. It was when I was thinking about calling a hunting party to get our minds off of the heat when a young dragon burst through the brambles, her eyes wide and frightened. “Ridgebacks!” She panted, her sharp yellow eyes flashing with fright. She flared her tan wings and locked eyes with me. “Lots of them!” Her dark red sides heaved heavily and her claws tore at the undergrowth in the excitement. I whipped around and looked at the others and we immediately tried to band together.

“Put the hatchlings in the center!” One shouted.

“Protect the treasure!” Hissed another.

Meanwhile, my mind raced and the world seemed to crumble beneath my talons. My life, the only life I had ever known, was now threatened. Dragons I cared for might die and there was nothing I could do about it.

It was in that moment of panic as we forced our tired bodies to become fueled with battle energy and shuffled together around what was most important that the Ridgebacks burst in.

A tall, dark green brute with lace-like patterns around his underbelly and leafy wings stepped forward, his blue eyes glinting with malice. “Give us your treasure.” He hissed, his tail lashing and slapping the tree trunks, shaking them so that the leaves fluttered off and whirled towards the ground.

Fiercely protective loyalty flashed through me. That had been the exactly wrong thing to say. “Never.” I hissed, and the others growled in agreement. The treasure was ours. We had earned it with our blood, sweat, and tears. We weren’t just going to hand it over to an obnoxious thug who couldn’t put his claws where his mouth was...or at least didn't seem able to, at that time.

The Ridgeback grinned devilishly and his cohorts fanned out around him, hemming us in. My breath came fast and terror flooded through me, but I stood my ground. The young Mirror that had first warned us was by my side and we glanced at each other, twining our tails. Flicker and I would have hatchlings someday, and we wouldn’t have an opportunity for a livelihood stolen by selfish brutes.

“You will surrender or die.” The Ridgeback hissed.

Our leader -a dark yellow dragon named Sunset who hailed from the Scarred Wasteland- and never backed down from a fight, snarled, his red eyes flashing. “We’re not going anywhere.”

The Ridgeback laughed. “You could run alive and fight again, but you decide to die as brave fools. I’ll give you that.” Then he flicked his wings and the dragons attacked.

It was sudden and abrupt, more fierce of a fight than I had ever fought before. Sunset was locked in a viscous duel with the lead Ridgeback, and besides me Flicker tussled with a huge blue female with a torn ear and jagged spines. I moved to help her just as a growling shadow loomed over me.

I gulped and looked up at a scarred black brute with fiery green eyes. Giving no warning, he lunged at me and I was overcome with his sheer mass. He snapped at my neck but I dodged, scoring my claws across his face. He roared angrily, one of his eyes swollen shut, and raked his claws across my back. I bit my tongue to prevent crying out in pain. My eyes darted around wildly and I grabbed a sharp, pointed rock shaped like an arrowhead and jabbed it into his underbelly, causing him to hiss and stumble back as blood stared trickling from the wound. His huge talons clasped around my neck and he began to squeeze, choking me. I scrabbled hopelessly as he pinned me down, the world becoming hazy before my eyes. He grinned ruthlessly just as Flicker shot into his side, knocking him off of me. I was too shocked to move, panting, as blood from a cut above my eyes stung and reddened my vision. The brute was furious and swiped at Flicker heftily, hitting her in the neck and causing her to slam into a tree trunk. Her body slid down the bark slowly, her wings limp. Her eyes stared on sightlessly. Her nostrils widened as though she was taking another breath...

But she never did.

An ear splitting screech tore across the woods and I looked around wildly to see who it was until I realized that it was my own. Pure fury blasted through me. I lunged at the Ridgeback.

From then on, all I remember is a blur. Blood, wounds, victories, and defeats meant nothing to me after then.

Nothing would ever matter again.

I remember a talon clobbering my head and the world fading to black before my eyes as my legs gave way under me. I remember what I thought was my last thought...a final whisper that left my lips as I lapsed into unconsciousness. “I love you.”

But I didn’t die.

When I came to, a hooded figure bent over me. She was rummaging around in a sack, applying some sort of sticky substance to my wounds. I mumbled hoarsely as she did so, looking up at her. All I could see was her shadowed face, covered in the cowl. “W-who are you?” I said weakly, my throat feeling like sandpaper as I hoarsely uttered the words.

“No one.” She said cryptically. She applied something cool to my head, and my next question died on my tongue as the world faded to black once again.

When I woke up I felt much better. I stretched slowly, turning my neck from side to side. Curling in my claws, I blinked and looked around to see where I was.

The sky was the dark blue of dusk and fading pink clouds wreathed the edge of the sky as the sun dipped below the horizon. Chirping crickets hummed through the air, and the dark green grass was soft and slightly damp below my talons. The air that filled me lungs was crisp and cool. Everything was quiet except for the crickets, the animals that moved about in the forest, and the crackling sound of hungry flames devouring wood as sparks drifted off into the air in wisps of smoke.

The hooded Mirror was still there. She was sitting at the edge of the woods, hunched over some flickering coals that she poked at with a stick. She glanced over at me. "You're awake." She said, tossing me something slightly burnt that smacked me in the head.

I fumbled with the warm object till I finally had the slightly greasy hunk of meat in my talons. I squinted at it. "Rabbit?" I asked, poking at the burned former animal.

She shrugged and seemed slightly sullen at my statement.

I managed to grin, stretching my snout which hissed in pain at the protest. "Still mastering cooking skills, eh?" I said with a chuckle, curling my tail over my back talons as I sat back.

The strange dragon shot a shadowed glare at me and shook her head with a sigh. She fascinated me, but I needed to know what had happened to my pack.

"Where was I when you found me?" I asked, anxious to hear an answer. Flicker.... My mind whispered in a dreamy tone. Our dragonets...

The hooded dragon gave me a look under the hood that felt sympathetic. "They were all dead." She said quietly.

"Dead?" I exclaimed as it felt as though the sky was crashing in on me. That's not true...it can't be true...they're not dead...

She just gave a half nod and tore a leg from her meal.

"A-all of them?" I repeated, still too stunned to accept the news.

The mysterious mirror nodded, looking up at me and then back down. "Many Ridgebacks were dead too, including a dark green one I think was their leader. It appeared he dislodged some rocks while fighting a yellow Mirror and crushed him, but then was wounded in the rockfall and crawled a little ways off where he bled to death. The camp was ransacked, the hatchlings were-" Her voice cut off and she stared intently at the fire again.

So it was true. Everyone was dead. Everyone I'd grown up with, my whole life.
In all the confusion and doubt and uncertainty that plagued me now, I knew only one thing for certain.

Flicker was dead, and I had died with her.

I buried my head in my talons, utterly silent.

The Mirror looked over at me. "Hey." She said. "You survived, you can carry on the legacy." She padded over to me and brushed my shoulder with a talon.

"Leave me alone." I grunted weakly, shrugging her off. I didn't need some strange comforting me right now, even if she had rescued me from the same fate.

She frowned at me. "You can't just sit there feeling sorry for yourself. You have to do what is right to carry on their legacy. Trust me- I know." Her voice halted and she turned to look out at the woods.

I sighed and inhaled deeply, struggling to conquer my emotions. "I guess you're right." I said, looking at her. "What's your name?"

The dragon that had saved my life looked down at me. "Mirage. Yours?"

"Shift." I replied. The grief still swamped me, still clung to my wings. But now there was something else....something strange...

"Shift, could I ask you something?" Mirage inquired, pulling me to my feet. Her hooded face looked intently into my eyes.

"Yes, what is it?" I asked, feeling slightly unnerved.

She brushed back the covering and revealed her face. I was startled with how much she looked like me. Her soft white face was complemented by her light gray body and startling obsidian wings. "I'm starting a Clan." She ventured boldly.

I started. "What?" I exclaimed. A clan? What was the good in that? All the dragons I'd grown up with were dead!

She nodded seriously and her eyes bore a strength and intelligence that reminded me of only one other dragon. "A clan of dragons from different breeds. It would be like a family, like a pack, but all the breeds would work together to support each other's strengths and cover each other's weaknessess."

I furrowed my snout, contemplative. "And?"

She inhaled deeply, seeming nervous for the first time since I'd met her. "I'd like you to join."

I opened my mouth to say No, No way, I've had enough of Packs and Clans and all that stuff, I was quite over it now.

But as I gazed into her eyes I saw something else. 'Honour their legacy..' My mind whispered. I remembered staring into Flicker's eyes as she whispered to me how we would start our own pack one day, with us and her dragonets.

I knew who Mirage reminded me of.
She reminded me of Flicker, the fallen love of my life.

I owed Mirage my life as I did Flicker.
My heart was still broken and would likely never mend, but in that moment I knew what I was going to do. It might be the craziest thing I had ever done, but I would do it.
In that moment, I knew Mirage and I had a future, and even though my old life was dead, my new life was beginning.

I inhaled deeply and stared into her eyes. "Yes."
