Cramum looked around the library and sighed. Although it had once been a popular gathering place, drawing in dragons from all corners of the Southern Icefields, its great halls were now devoid of life. Rarely will a dragon visit, picking out a single book before making a beeline for the door. Even more rarely will they pick up another after returning the first.

The imperial wandered the empty halls, recalling images of the past. Here is where he found an old Pearlcatcher stuffing an unused shelf with children's books. "You only ever stock old history books. Your collection is ancient! There is nothing here for the little ones to read." She had a point, he thought. How was he supposed to inspire new readers if he didn't have anything on their level? Here is where a couple of naughty hatchlings pulled all of the books off of the shelf to make their own little den. It took him an hour to reorganize all those books! Over there is where little Tagetes had a basket overflowing with different plants that she excitedly matched to pictures in a field guide. How he wished he could see such excitement in his halls again.

Cramum swept a claw over a neglected shelf, sending dust billowing into the air. Ever since his mate passed away he found it difficult to maintain his vast collection. They were the same age, both imperials, though she had aged so much faster than him. He was over a hundred years old and barely into middle age, yet she lived to only 36. Such is the curse of the imperial breed. Cramum never realized how much work she had poured into the library until he was alone. She had been the one bringing patrons in for all those years. There was always an event planned, be it a book club meeting or a showcase. Twice a week she would read books to hatchlings, inspiring them to take up reading themselves. That all died with her.

Cramum picked up an old, worn tome. 'Of Gladeveins and Boneyards', a forbidden romance between a wildclaw from the Viridian Labyrinth and another from the Scarred Wasteland. It was her favourite book. She must have read it at least a dozen times. Perhaps it was time he knew what all the fuss was about. He retired to his reading corner by the fire and opened the book to the first page. Out fell a small scrap of paper. A bookmark? No, it had writing on it. Cramum picked it up and examined it. "This is her writing" he gasped.

"My love, just as the dragons of Nature and Plague, so are Light and Shadow torn. Although we are from different worlds we never questioned our time together. I will never forget that day we met on the Sundial Terrace. There were so many dragons from far off lands gathered there to trace the shadow it cast. You were so focused on your scroll that you walked right into me. Your face flushed so red I thought that was your natural colour! Before long we were hotly debating all sorts of literature. You preferred the classics of Light while I loved the new style of Shadow. It was like we were both born in the wrong flight.

When the solstice was over, expectations forced you back to The Tangled Wood and I was left alone again. However, you just could not stay away. I recall how often we met in that little glen on the border of our territories. It was like our own secret world. Our clans would never approve of us, but we didn't care. It wasn't long before my clan became suspicious of my disappearance. I was so afraid we would be found out. When you asked me to elope with you I didn't hesitate. We packed only what we could carry and set off the next day.

It wasn't easy, but we made the Southern Icefield our home. Together we built a wonderful library full of knowledge and emotion. If I could do it all again I wouldn't change a thing. Please do not mourn for me my love. We spent 20 amazing years together full of love, laughter, and passion. I hope you don't bury yourself in books when I am gone, for there is so much more to life than dusty tomes. I tried so hard to show you this time and time again. All of those patrons made our home so lively yet you always had your nose stuck in some old book. I think you'll find the world has more to offer than just literature. You need the company of a clan, and the clan needs your library. History is happening all around you. Don't miss out on the story of your life. My chapter may be over, but it is just one of many. Make your story a happy one.

Forever yours,
Glimmer"

Tears streamed down Cramum's face. All these years he had thought that Glimmer devoted herself to the library, but she was utterly devoted to him. He had allowed her masterpiece to fall into such disarray that no one wanted to visit anymore. Cramum looked around at the dust covered shelves around him. He had made up his mind. For as long as he lived, Glimmer's memory would not be forgotten. He would restore this library if it was the last thing he ever did. Cramum spent the the night cleaning every surface he could reach. He dusted row after row of books until he could no longer stand. This library was her legacy, and he was determined to restore it.
