Biography
Vain the Blacksmith fire is the best proof Theme: Impossible |
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Stam and Radek are trying to get some dragons to taste their new brew,” Lorne said over the roar of the furnace. He waited for an answer Vain never gave. “Interested?” “Maybe.” Vain cast a glance toward the Pearlcatcher lovingly sharpening the sword that was Vain’s Charge. “Interested, Sokka?” “Any other refreshments?” Sokka didn’t sound interested. Vain sighed. Sokka didn’t take anything Vain might want into consideration with the knowledge that the sword he refused to relinquish was a major part of Vain’s life. Vain went where the sword went. That meant Vain went were Sokka went. And Sokka was frustratingly oblivious to Vain’s unavoidable impulse to have the sword in wing’s reach. Lorne said that would pass and he would become comfortable with simply being nearby. “Well, it’s almost lunch. Stam and Radek will have a nice spread of things to eat that’ll appeal to your plant-loving palate.” Lorne, to his credit, tried to foster a working relationship between Sokka and Vain. Sokka put one final stroke with the whetstone. “Why not?” “Thanks.” Vain rose from his seat, letting his Wind magic die down since he didn’t need to keep the forge hot. “How do you always have an in on their new brews?” “As the science-team’s primary protector,” Lorne sighed, “there really ought to be some upside.” Vain cast a sideways glance at Sokka. He couldn’t agree more. He would have given nearly anything for an upside. But since Sokka wouldn’t take anything, anything at all, in exchange for that precious sword… Vain was stuck here. |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
Vainamoinen, or Vain (pronunced: vah - en) to his friends, was hatched after a particularly difficult time in his home clan. His genesis was a mark of his clan’s emergence from the fires of war, though in a much more personal fashion for his father, the blacksmith, and his mother, the most-loved creation brought to life by death and magic. Vain’s family was a loving one, though marked with shame. When his longing to find his Charge emerged, he bade them farewell and left. He promised his other clan-mates that he would first visit one of their own, Kupari, who lived and worked with another Wind clan. Finding that the Tempest Chase traveled as much as he wanted to, in order to find his charge, Vain went along as an apprentice and assistant to Pyre, the Tempest Chase blacksmith. Unfortunately, Vain’s Charge showed not long after he settled into life as a nomadic blacksmith. He and Pyre received a commission from Kupari’s cousin, Sokka, to forge him a sword of fallen starstuff. Though Vain had as many qualms as his father about forging weapons, he felt a strange sort of attachment to the idea… The resulting sword was, without a doubt, his Charge. Therefore, Sokka became something of Vain’s Charge-by-proxy, despite their difference of opinion on just about everything. Vain enjoys spending time with Kupari’s cousins, mostly Lorne, who also came across some unspecified disappointment in his Charge. A common pastime of the group is to try to guess what it is. Now that the Tempest Chase’s blacksmith has moved on, Vain is now the singular blacksmith in the Chase. He’s proud of his position, and his position as a Wind-dragon blacksmith. He likes to say a Fire dragon could do no better than he, even though he learned almost everything he knows from a Fire dragon Forgemaster. Vain awaits the day he can call himself the same thing. Wind’s qualities remain important to Vain. Though he is, perhaps, not as giddy and impulsive as other Wind dragons, he finds joy in traveling and learning about new places. He hopes to stay with Kupari and her family for quite some time, as he finds he’s been more-or-less adopted into their family regardless of a lack of blood. Perhaps that’s what being a Wind dragon really means. |

Ukko's had a long and interesting life thus far. Centaurs usually live in herds, and Ukko was once in a herd as well. A weapons aficionado (and terrifyingly good with them), he traveled around saving his Centaur brothers and sisters from... well, dragons mostly. No one's really sure why he's taken a shine to Vain, or whether he has. They do know that he's quite old, and fickle at that. He may pick up and leave one day without warning; his name may not even be Ukko. He's really quite mysterious. |

As if Vain needed any more complication in his life, he is saddled with what he views as a secondary or false Charge, Chrys. Strange magic bringing inanimate objects to life seem to follow Vain’s family around, or at least that’s the common theory. Whatever the case, Chrys was once a statue, and he came into sapient being knowing beyond a doubt that he was Vain’s. Vain wants little as possible to do with him. Chrys seems content, if not severely disappointed with Vain’s rejection. If a stone can come to life, then Vain can change his mind. |
Vain’s mate is the Tempest Chase’s hatchling caretaker, Lilwen. The two of them are more alike than one might believe at first glance, each believing in some way they’ve made a terrible mistake and their families will never be proud of them. Whether that is true or not, they have complimentary temperaments, with Lilwen constantly looking on the bright side and Vain constantly looking for any bright side. They have their own fair share of spats, like any couple, but have shared enough so far to at least have respect for those views they believe unequivocally wrong. |
━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Vain couldn’t bring himself to take Lilwen’s cheerful surname, and so stuck with the name of the clan of his birth: Coldwind. » » Despite Vain’s apparent industrious work-ethic, he has been called lazy. His propensity with Wind magic allows him to do almost everything without moving a muscle: strong Winds lift heavy objects, feed a fire, close doors, and sweep the floor. |
