Biography
Lilwen the Hatchling Attendant out of the mouths of babes Theme: Boo Bass |
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“You will fly, dear. It doesn’t have to be today.” The Skydancer pushed away her soft-gloved claw as she tried to hug him close. “No.” Little Falco turned his yellow beak to the clouds above. “I’m gonna be the best flyer in all of Wind Flight. The whole world!” Lilwen tried to hide her smile. Even hatchlings knew when they were being talked down to. As a rule, she didn’t talk down to them… but hatchlings were very sensitive. It was rare for them to find a dragon that just talked to them. “Have you talked to Celtine? She’s quite good.” Falco glared. “Yeah. But she does all kinds of crazy things with her neck, like—” He paused to attempt to turn his head almost upside down. It was possible with the long, lithe body of a Spiral… less so for a Skydancer. “But,” Lilwen said, “have you noticed her tail?” When Falco stared blankly, Lilwen leaned her head to one side and lashed her tail out opposite to give him a small hint. “It goes the opposite way?” Falco guessed. “It’s called counterbalance.” Lilwen smiled at him. “Flying is complicated. You can’t expect to learn it in a day.” Falco tramped off through the grass. “I guess. But I won’t be the best if I don’t practice a lot.” He’d taken the lesson of counterbalance to heart, throwing his tail about with enthusiasm and nearly falling for his efforts. All seven of her leathery crests flared in surprise. Out of the mouths of hatchlings… But that was why she loved her job. She was a teacher, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t be a learner, too. |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
Though Lilwen’s parents were members of a Water clan called Folk of the Old Sea, they would travel to her mother’s native clan to receive the blessing of her native deity. Lilwen was loved as any hatchling would be, and found herself called upon to help watch the other hatchlings thanks to her maturity and compassion. Despite obvious gifting in the area of hatchling-care, her parents hoped their daughter would follow them into their merchant profession. After all, the work had served them well. They were always well-fed, clothed, and had more than enough treasure. Sometimes it seemed to Lilwen that their hopes for her were more requirements. Lilwen decided that she had Wind in her blood (her father was a Wind dragon), and so left her old clan and their expectations for her. She was woefully unprepared, her flighty Light ideals often taking precedence over more practical matters. She took jobs along her journey as she could, any work would do. She ended up staying some time with a rancher Ridgeback named Dusty, who introduced her to the neighboring mostly-nomadic clan. Though Lilwen was happier with Dusty than she had ever been before, she became their traveling hatchling caretaker. She is happy to visit her old friend Dusty whenever they return. Still, Lilwen found that she could be friends with nearly any dragon. It’s best if she can be a good example to the hatchlings she raises. When not caring for hatchlings, Lilwen is a bit of a dragon for all seasons. She enjoys learning new things, much like a hatchling, and prides herself on figuring out what roles her little ones might be suited to as adults. In fact, she spends a great deal of time with the Tempest Chase’s matchmaker, Amicus, since she figures her role is somewhat like his. If a dragon is to be properly matched with anything, they ought to behave like a proper dragon first. Lilwen seems like she may only be a Light dragon by birth element. She enjoys talking philosophy and law, but she’s certainly more interested in the practical application of raising hatchlings. The hatchling is the most important dragon to a clan: the dragon that will lead in the future. She studies how to best bring up these hatchlings, and does a fine job. |
━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Lilwen doesn’t particularly have time to take care of familiars with all the time she spends with the hatchlings. All the same, she agreed to take care of a gecko that lives in Heather’s garden named Lanatus. She isn’t sure where he got his name, but the hatchlings sure seem to like watching him crawl around all over the vegetables growing there, lapping up insects that come along. Lilwen has become fond of him, as well; she even takes him on short trips. She once didn’t like the feeling of him crawling up her wing webbing for a better vantage, but now feels like something is missing when he’s back in Heather’s garden. |
━━ clan ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Lilwen’s closest companion and friend is Dusty, the rancher. Though the two do not see each other too often, Lilwen is always happy to return from the Tempest Chase’s long treks overland. Lilwen will often bring all her hatchlings with her to see Dusty, since they like to watch and play with Dusty’s elk and antelope. When there are no hatchlings around, though, they take long walks around Dusty’s land as they talk. Though Dusty is a Wind dragon, she was raised in a Light clan by her mother and knows more-or-less how to talk to Light dragons. Lilwen does most of the talking between them, though. |
Even though their jobs couldn’t be more different, Lilwen’s believes more than ever that she can be friends with anyone, especially if their job is interesting for her hatchlings to watch. Lilwen first befriended Vain this way, taking her little ones to watch him work. Their friendship evolved from there, talking about more things than just work, since their work lives were quite separate. Like Lilwen, Vain sometimes thinks that his parents wouldn’t be very proud of him at all, and moved away from his clan to escape what was finished before his time. Together, they look to the future. |
━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Lilwen decided on her surname as she was leaving Light territory: Brightside. It’s her way of looking forward as well as looking back. » » Before Lilwen’s arrival at the Tempest Chase, hunters’ hatchlings would be left with Moor and Heather in the Steppes, most to likely never see their parents again » » Lilwen wears plush, soft-colored clothing, for the hatchlings’ interest. She does carry over her love of luxury from her parents. |
