______ What's your biggest regret, Ronan?" Dayna asks.

Ronan looks at her like she's speared him through the guts. "Dayna."

"Because mine's not going back for you," Dayna says. She bites her tongue so hard she tastes copper and watches the play of complicated emotions on Ronan's face. He's so hard for her to read when he's awake, even after all this time. "I should have gone back. It was my job and I just - I wish. I wish I'd gone back for you."

"You thought I was dead," Ronan says softly.

"I did. But I didn't know, yeah?" Dayna tells him. She'd watched him take the blow, had heard the wet crack it had made, seen the arcing spray of red. He'd crumpled instantly, knees turning to liquid and shoulders curling down, fingers falling slack. She remembers the empty static buzz of incomprehension that had filled her as she watched him hit the earth; she hadn't had thoughts,
only flashing impressions of emotion through the battlehaze and the shock. "I should have checked. I should have tried."

"That's not your fault," Ronan tells her, although he has to know that she's not good at cutting her losses the way the is. He had been such an efficient battlefield medic for that reason precisely,
and she an efficient hero for the opposite.

"Stop trying to make me feel better about leaving you to die on a beach," Dayna snaps at him, and Ronan laughs at her, the rat. His expression is still too complex for her to decipher, but his eyes are warm.

"I didn't die, though, did I?" he asks her. She loves that he will tell her something he himself barely believes, just to make her feel better.

"No," she tells him fiercely, fondly, for them both. "You didn't."
